THE PALESTRINA CHOIR The Palestrina Choir, founded in 1902, is the resident choir of Dublin’s St. Mary’s Pro- Cathedral. For over one hundred years the choir has grown into a much loved and respected institution which continues to develop its unparalleled reputation for the singing of liturgical music. Composed of approximately 60 members, both boys and men, it is one of the most widely recognized and respected Catholic choirs in the world. It traces its’ history back the late 1800’s with a guiding principle of promoting sacred music. Since its foundation, The Palestrina Choir has maintained an unbroken tradition of Sunday liturgy at the Pro-Cathedral. It has been described as “the jewel in the crown of Catholic liturgical music.” The choir is called upon for all major national liturgies. Through the years it has performed at major State occasions such as the State Funerals of Presidents and Prime Ministers. The choir has had only seven directors. Under its present director, Blánaid Murphy, the choir has travelled extensively in recent years, singing at many cathedrals and venues throughout Ireland, Europe, and North America. Their most recent tour of the United States was in 2018, including performances in Minneapolis/St. Paul, Milwaukee, Chicago, and the University of Notre Dame. Blánaid Murphy is regarded as one of Ireland’s leading conductors. Her performances have taken her across Europe and the United States and she has conducted virtually all of the large-scale choral repertoire. Ms. Murphy has a distinguished reputation as an interpreter of the choral works of J.S. Bach, having conducted many of his major choral works, including annual performances of the Passions. She is currently director of The Palestrina Choir, since 2002, St Mary’s Pro-Cathedral Girls’ Choir, since its inception in 2009, Dublin Bach Singers, Carlow Choral Society, the Royal Irish Academy of Music Chorale and Continuum Youth Choir. Her son Conor is a Blánaid Murphy current member of the Palestrina Choir.
