Religious Education “Making Our Mark: Journey of an Intentional Disciple” Exemplifying the 5 Marks of a Catholic School in each of our school communities is our commitment to the families we serve. Most importantly, our Catholic schools must first be a place to encounter Jesus Christ. • Growing in our faith and deepening our relationship with Christ is a never-ending journey. Each of us in our Catholic schools is being called to use the Gospel message to make our mark in the world as intentional disciples • Fostering academic excellence through the Alberta curriculum, permeated with our faith, virtues, and Catholic social teachings • Implementing Religious Education programs approved by the Alberta Bishops, including new programs for Grades 1 to 8 • Embracing the foundational belief that all children are loved by God, have unique gifts, and have the right to fulfill their God-given potential in all aspects of their person • Working closely with parishes that prepare children to receive the sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist, Reconciliation, and Confirmation Supportive Programming for Diverse Learners Divisional Behaviour Support Team • Using research-based strategies, the Behaviour Support Team works with classroom teachers to implement programs that will enhance learning opportunities for all students English as a Second Language (ESL) • Providing support for English language learners in the division, our ESL Teacher Specialist collaborates with classroom teachers to identify effective instructional supports • As part of the intake process, the ESL Teacher Specialist meets new, incoming English language learners and their families to facilitate a smooth transition to school Family First Facilitator (FFF) Program • Through the provision of a prevention and early intervention model, the FFF supports children, youth, and families in acquiring skills and knowledge required to strengthen and increase their capacity to care for themselves and others. This dynamic program is delivered in École St. Mary and The Children of St. Martha schools Family School Liaison Counsellor (FSLC) Program • The FSLC program utilizes a proactive approach to deliver services to children, youth, and families. Program services include counselling, prevention/educational programming, community liaison, and crisis intervention. Highly skilled FSLCs work within the school environment and are available to any family with students attending Holy Spirit Catholic School Division Mental Health Capacity Building (MHCB) Program • The MHCB program works to promote positive mental health in children, youth, and families in the communities where they live. The program is based on the belief that mental and emotional wellbeing can be developed, nurtured, and supported through promotion and prevention efforts. This vibrant team delivers services throughout Holy Spirit Catholic School Division
Early Learning Program • Early Learning programming is offered to children 3 and 4 years of age by December 31st. We believe that: • Play is the work of children. It is through play and interaction with others that children develop the ability to regulate their emotions and their thinking • By focusing on learning through play, we encourage children to interact, explore, create, solve problems, and make sense of the world around them • Our nurturing environment assists children in their development of positive relationships and problem-solving skills through daily interaction with peers and adults • Parents are the first and most important teachers in their child’s life. As such, they are valued partners in the Early Learning experience There is fully-funded Early Intervention Programming for children with exceptional learning needs, as well as coordinated community services to meet the needs of the children and their families. Kindergarten Kindergarten is offered to children 5 years of age by December 31st. We believe that: • Children develop at different rates. Kindergarten provides learning experiences that meet individual needs • Young children are naturally curious and eager to learn. French Language Instruction French as a Second Language (FSL) FSL is offered in most schools from Grades 4 to 12. Students enjoy learning basic French skills and appreciate various traditional celebrations closely linked to our Catholic faith, such as: la Toussaint, la Sainte-Catherine, l’Épiphanie, and la Chandeleur. French Immersion The French Immersion program is offered across Canada and is designed for children whose parents do not speak French. In this program, students learn most of their subjects in French, which enables them to become functionally fluent in the language. French Immersion is offered from Early Learning to Grade 12 at École St. Mary, St. Francis Junior High, and Catholic Central High School. St. Michael’s School (Pincher Creek) offers French infused Kindergarten classes, French Immersion from Grades 1 to 6, and French Language Arts for Grades 7 and 8. Cultural activities, the DELF proficiency exams, exchange opportunities, and school trips are offered to both FSL and French Immersion students who pursue second language learning at the junior and senior high levels. First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Education • Holy Spirit Catholic School Division has three Graduation Coach Programs called, “Oohkaanaayiikaakii’moap,” (We are all striving for success). Based at Catholic Central High, St. Francis Junior High, and St. Michael’s School (Pincher Creek), our Graduation Coaches work with students to create a path for success in school • Seven (7) First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Support Workers are critical members of the learning teams in our schools • Curriculum that infuses current, historical, and cultural contributions of the First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples to our community, province, and nation • Variety of course offerings and co-curricular clubs including: Blackfoot courses, language and cultural programs, beading, dance, and drumming groups • Staff collaboration with First Nations, Métis, and Inuit families, Elders, and community members to enhance student success • Division First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Student Awards celebration, Feather Blessing for our graduating First Nations students, and Presentation of Métis Sashes to our graduating Métis students • Committed to continuing our journey to support the Calls to Action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada
