Aviation Executive Monthly Frank Jay & Associates – Airline, Aviation and Aerospace Executive Search To “Tell All”, by Frank M. Jay Recently, we were contacted by a longstanding friend who had a question on the recruiting process. He said that he had been contacted by another retained search firm about an opportunity that appeared to be interesting. He said that he provided his resume to the firm and that search firm then arranged to meet with him for a personal interview. He said that everything in the interview process seemed to go well but that several days later the search firm contacted him to say that the client wasn’t interested based on “relocation”. He said that when he had talked to the search consultant about the position, he told the consultant that the client’s location sounded great, but that his spouse would be staying behind since she had a great job in their current location and that they would be doing a “commuter marriage”. He said that later the consultant had told him that the client “didn’t want that type of an arrangement and preferred full relocation”. His question to us was whether he should have mentioned in the early stages of the process that his wife might not be coming with him to the new location. He asked if he was giving too much information too early and said that this was the second time that he had encountered such a situation. He said that he knew that a lot of people were working in different cities than their spouses, that he didn’t understand why it might be a “big deal” but that it evidently was. He then asked our opinion as to when it is appropriate to disclose such information in the interview process. We responded by saying that we wouldn’t recommend making that decision until the client makes an offer of employment. We said that whether a person commutes or decides to move as a family is always up for negotiation theoretically so it doesn’t make sense to decide on such things until an offer has been made. We explained that once an offer has been made by the client, you certainly want to discuss it with your family. After discussing it with them, you tell the search firm and the client what your plans are…whether you want to commute, relocate as a family, etc. and then you and the search firm and the client come to an agreement that works for everyone. To ”Tell All” (continued from page 1) Or, you and the client decide that situation just isn’t going to work. Regardless, until you have all of the information that an offer of employment provides, you really don’t know whether you will relocate, commute, etc. Obviously, if the offer is high enough, in most cases relocation is possible. But, if you tell the client that you are unwilling to fully relocate BEFORE you know the compensation and all of the other information, then you have made a decision without all of the applicable details. I have seen many situations where the candidate planned not to relocate but ended up doing so based on the details of the offer. I told our long time friend that, if I had been the search consultant involved, that I would have recommended to him to wait for all of the information before determining a plan on relocation…that everything is negotiable and anything can happen. I told him next time to get all of the information and then talk about what he would like to do. I suggested that the client might come up with something at some point that would change his mind about commuting…and that, as a candidate, he really needed to keep “potential issues” from being a part of the process until both he and the client knew for sure that they were of interest to each other. In the search process, most candidates…and most clients…always want to make some decisions as quickly as possible. Most candidates want to eliminate positions that do not offer what they THINK they want…and most clients want to eliminate candidates that do not offer what they THINK they want. And, in the process, candidates eliminate great opportunities and clients eliminate great candidates. It is often up to the search consultant to keep the process going until both the candidate and the client realize that they have a great “fit”…that there are (as always) some issues that need to be overcome. To “lock in” decisions early in the process almost always is detrimental to successful results. The wise candidate…and the wise client…realize this. Aviation Executive Monthly | March | 2022
