Stable Talk A big hello and welcome to September/October 2016 edition of the Pony Express. Wow! This is the big one. As promised we are bringing you the coverage of the 37th Annual Mustang Convention which was hosted in Auckland, by AMOC over the Labour weekend. By now you will have noticed the different cover for this issue. The car featured on the cover was voted “Best in Show” at Convention. Congratulations to Shane McCullum (AMOC) for picking up this award! For many of you who attended the convention, as you flick through the pages, we hope it re-ignites those memories and special moments of what was without doubt an amazing spectacle and an incredibly well organised event. For those who couldn’t make it to Convention, here is a chance to see what you missed! We hope you get as much enjoyment flicking through the pages as we did bringing this edition to you. Finally, with the days get longer, and the weather getting warmer (and hopefully dryer), there are plenty of upcoming opportunities to get those car covers off and hit the road. Make sure you check out the events calendar on page 14, and don’t forget to register your interest in attending. We would love to hear from you so keep the stories, photos and news rolling in. Wishing you the best in health and a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Mike & Cass Powell Mob 027 9114 711 amoc_newsletter@icloud.com 3
President’s Note It is now November and Xmas is fast approaching. Time to start leaving notes around the house as to what you want Santa to bring you for your Mustang. It has been a very busy couple of months leading up to Convention and what a fantastic Convention it was. I am immensely proud of the Club for all the hard work put into the event and from the positive feedback coming from other clubs, the media and general public, we have produced a Convention to remember. Ian Waters, President While the format was similar to most Conventions this year we held functions and accommodation at a venue never used before, we used a new car show venue and the Sunday run was to a new area of the country to most participants. The highlight was the car show venue at the Viaduct which covered 3 floors including show cars, trade stands and cars of interest. We also had Paul Fahey, the legendary Mustang race driver visit the show and he was blown away with the quality and size. We had media from TV 3, Sky Speedshow, and various magazines which have already put up coverage on their web pages. Auckland take a bow, you have all helped make this a Convention that will be talked about for some time. The weather hasn’t been exactly great and one could be forgiven that we are a country that normally doesn’t have a monsoon season, but we have had some rain and over a prolonged period. However the Mustangs need to be let out of the pen and those events we have been involved with were in the main fine. We had cars showing at Motat’s Fathers’ Day and while there were only a few cars, the organisers were very happy and are looking to make this an annual event. The Henry Ford Day in Hamilton finally happened and what a fine day, record numbers of cars and public, so well done Waikato Mustang Club. We took a van and BBQ which went down very well with the drivers and passengers of our 18 cars. 4
Now that hopefully the weather starts behaving we will have a few more events and the calendar is filling pretty fast. There is plenty happening starting with the ITM Drivers run up Queen St on the 3rd of November then the Poker Run on the 13th November followed the week after with our annual Xmas BBQ, this time at Tapapakanga Regional Park. We are again looking at a Xmas lights run in December and that will wrap up this year. Starting the new year we will be going to the Vintage Speedway again in January, a visit to Gibbs Farm on 23rd February. There will be Concours fun runs and car show on 11th & 12th February and we are trying to organise a weekend away up North. We are also planning a shed run to Reece Fish’s property to look at his cars and probably a run somewhere for a casual boot lunch. So lots happening early in the year. I hope to see as many as possible at these events over the coming months. Please remember if you have an idea for an event do let us know because if you found it of interest then chances are others will also. There will be no club meeting in January and we will have our traditional BBQ welcome back for the February meeting. With the next edition of Pony Express due at the end of December, Jackie and I would like wish you and your families a very merry Xmas and happy new year. All Ford Day 11th September - Hamilton Stop Press. AMOC wins “Best Club Display” award at the Hamilton (Henry Ford) Given “Take 1” of the Henry Ford Day at Claudelands, Hamilton on 31 July had to be postponed due to extremely bad weather, Take 2 certainly turned the tables. Sunday September 11th dawned, with a crisp, clear, (frosty in some parts) Spring day, with the temperature soaring as the day progressed. With an early set off from the usual south bound meeting point at BP Bombay, and with some 15 cars assembled, we set off south at a brisk place with a long wheel base, high roof Ford Transit van setting a keen pace. Upon arrival at Claudelands, the showgrounds were filling fast with at least more than 200 Fords of all sorts, ranging from original restores to the significantly modified. You know you are in the Waikato, when with hundreds of people are attending an event, but there is never a queue for the toilets which were capable of accommodating a maximum of three or four people. Potentially a case of be careful where you walk. Ian did a fantastic job on the barbeque, possibly too good given many approaches were being made from the public to buy food from the barbeque. The “pop up” barbeque was an easily organized, cost effective way of providing food, and hopefully the first of many more spontaneous drive and barbie runs to come. Come 2pm it was time to pack up and make the short trek home. Special thanks to the members who made up the numbers on the run, to North Harbour Ford for the generous use of the van, Tony Powell of Willow Gully Murray Greys for the sensational sausages and most importantly Ian, who donned the apron and did an outstanding job on the catering front. 6

Blue September Car Trial to Leadfoot Ranch 25th September By Raewyn Townley First day of daylight saving time sees me up and dressed at what would normally be 5.00am!! I haven’t seen that time on a Sunday morning in years!! It was so dark outside that I couldn’t even find our old dog to give him a very early breakfast but he found the food soon enough. A quick cup of tea and we were off to McDs at Bombay to meet up with John and Pauline for breakfast. Today is the day of Cory’s Charity Car Trial in aid of prostate cancer. A great cause for all the men in our lives. I would love to tell you that it is a beautiful spring morning but I won’t because it’s not! It is very wet and windy. We all met up at Cory’s in Pukekohe, about 50 cars in all. All types and sizes. Only 3 of us from AMOC. Maybe next year a few more will turn up for this very worthy cause. Cory’s have raised more than $50,000 so far this month. We were given a set of instructions about where to go. Along the way, the instructions said, you will find coloured circles to list on a numbered sheet. We had no idea as to what they looked like….how hard could it be to find a coloured circle? Almost impossible it turned out, because they were all SQUARE. A red herring me thinks. Our starter was none other than our very own Buck Shelford, a patron of the prostate cancer organisation. He gave all the men a rev up about getting a P.S.A (prostate) test done. He himself has been treated for a different type of cancer but still gets a P.S.A test done each year. He let us go at 30 second intervals. We were off and trying to follow directions that had a couple more red herrings in them e.g. two right turns when there was only one. And like sheep we followed. Once we were going in the right direction we had to look out for those blasted coloured circles that weren’t circles. Did I mention that it was raining? The further into the trip the harder it rained and the less likely we were able to see the circles we were seeking. 10
I’d love to tell you about the beautiful scenery we were driving through on our journey but I can’t because it was raining so hard. Did I tell you about the rain? I can tell you about the many newly formed waterfalls coming down from places they shouldn’t. They did look pretty though. We meandered our way through countryside we hadn’t seen before. Cattle and sheep had their very own swimming pools. Its wealthy country down that way…every paddock had one!! Our trip took us up over the Kopu/Hikaui Road hill. The higher we went the less we could see such was the fog…so much for spring. These coloured circles eluded us still. A few more hills and a bit more fog and we finally reached the turnoff for Hot Water Beach Road. The water was so high in nearby paddocks it created a river across the road. A bit of a trap for those with lowered cars. Once at Leadfoot Ranch we congregated at the “gas station” waiting to be shuttled up to the Ranch. A steep and winding racetrack, we were in a van so our driver was a bit cautious. Cory’s had big BBQ’s set up with burgers, sausages, hot and cold drinks etc for sale. All going to the charity. The permanent marquee was where the auction was being held and was used as a dining room as well. The rain beat down on the roof and the wind blew. Did I mention that it was raining? Some items up for auction were not relevant for those of us living in suburban Auckland. Such things as a septic tank clean and 2 men, a digger and a dump truck for an entire Saturday morning, but all items were sold and there was some very happy buyers. At the end of the day we could take home some sauce tomatoes or a lettuce if you chose. Inside a wooden and waterproof building was the home of about a dozen or so vintage vehicles but because of the weather, I did say it was raining didn’t I? We were unable to visit the sheds where all of Rods race cars are housed. That visit was dependent on the weather. We were advised to be gone before 3pm because of the high tide coming in and covering the road. We just made it out in time the water was up to the doors on our car. Nearly had to get the outriggers out! They closed the road shortly thereafter. In spite of the wind, the fog and all that rain that I am sure I mentioned a great bunch of people came together for a well run charity, parted with some hard earned cash and had a great day. 11

37th National Mustang Convention 20th to 24th October Well now the Convention has been and gone, it is time to reflect on how we went, and first up must be a massive note of thanks to a whole host of people: Our sponsors. Convention is increasingly a very expensive exercise to run and we simply couldn’t have done it without our sponsors from Gold right through to the people who bought a raffle ticket. Each and every one of you make it possible to turn on the event we just have. All those who attended. As always we had so much fun catching up with old friends from all over New Zealand (and Australia) and making new ones. Attitude is everything and I think it is pretty safe to say that everyone came enjoy the weekend – and enjoy we all did! AMOCers – while it is a small band of people who do the organizing, it would all fall very flat if we were not able to depend on the very willing helpers. To those who stepped up and put in a couple of hours here and there (some of you did double duty as well), whether you were attending the Convention or not, please give yourselves a big hand. It surely made the weekend run much more smoothly. The Convention Committee. We have put in 18 months of hard work to bring it all together and there was no one happier than the committee when it worked out as we planned all those months ago. The feedback has been spectacular! 16
The highlights for me personally were: Hosting some 300 people for the weekend who all contributed to the success of the weekend by embracing the spirit that is Convention. The car show venue – quite simply superb. When we first approached the Viaduct Events Centre we hoped but did not expect that it would be remotely within the scope of our budget and were very surprised when it was. With some extra talking we were also able to secure a large amount of the wharf area which meant we could accommodate everyone which made it a magnificent show. MOTORHOOD said it was the best car show venue they have ever seen! The people – it is always about the people for me. Somehow Mustang owners are a pretty good bunch of people and we have some pretty good fun, whether it is preparing the cars, looking at them at the car show, competing in the push n grunt, or partying up later in the weekend, somehow we seem to be on the same page! The weather – while Colin Reed of the Waikato Club took credit for organising the weather, I am not sure even he has that much influence. The weather gods must be huge fans of the blue oval because they surely shone on us over the entire weekend. The committee will sign off after we meet one more time to wrap up our files. Our intention is to leave good records and document templates for the next time AMOC are hosts, and we will also send Bay Of Plenty a file of information and document templates to assist them for when they host for the first time. It only remains to say roll on 2017 and SMOC’s turn again in Invercargill. After their first Convention in 2011, wild horses (or should that be Mustangs) couldn’t hold me back from attending their second! Plans are already afoot to again put together a 2 week road trip, so any expressions of interest would be most welcome. Please get in touch at margaret@paulmargaret.com. 17

National Mustang Convention Live on Paul Henry Show 20th October - A4 Lower Queen Street The word went out, be at the Countdown Supermarket at the bottom of town at 5.45 am. What was not made clear was that on arrival, we would be greeted by a semi- naked Warren Hamlin behind the boot of his car engaging in a fairly intense discussion with non other but Charles Quintal. A few short minutes later, and with Warren now fully clothed we were on our way to A4. This was not the last that we would see of Warren for the day as some hours later he appeared to have won the heart of a woman on a mobility scooter to whom he had suggested they should go for a drink. And, she returned all fired up and ready to go. For those who have no idea where A4 is, in old Aucklander’s speak this is downtown Square. Why were we there? We were given the opportunity to put on a small yet, perfectly formed car display for the public as a teaser and lead up to the 37 th National Mustang Convention. Time check, 6.12 and with all 9 cars in position and ready to go, Aziz, Dougal and the team from TV3 arrived to take live feeds to be cut into the morning’s Paul Henry show. Starting with a synchronized engine rev that promised to send some of the older cars in to an overheating frenzy and for the others the opportunity to set fire to the plastic oil drip sheets which succumbed to the heat of hot exhausts and cats, events progressed to Jen, the poor unsuspecting onlooker being lured into the back of Warren’s car, fortunately not with Warren but instead Aziz to play 9 in 10, and sadly missing out by only being able to name 7 items commonly found in your bathroom cabinet. 21
After the team from TV3 moved on it was down to serious PR campaigning with the public many who had been drawn to the display as a result of hearing about it on the Paul Henry show. The display was a real hit, with Aziz even commenting on air that he had never seen so many people drawn to a pop up live feed as what he experienced with the Mustangs. Meantime, back in the studio this was being supported by an extremely enthusiastic Paul Henry, a Mustang owner himself. We really could not have asked for better publicity or coverage, with A4 flyers being handed out by the arm load. An infinite number of photos were being taken. Safe to say for the 9 cars present, based on the number of photos taken by the public, social media must be buzzing. John Lipanovich, a man not easily taken by surprise was fascinated to learn from one passing barefoot Queen Street vagrant that he was a racer and had put many cars through an “S” Bend, therefore leaning to the theory that there is clearly more than one thing that you can race through an “S” bend. Come 2pm and after many hours standing, and talking to the public, it was time to pack up. Well that was the case for 8 of the cars. Before going further, worthwhile noting that the editorial function of this magazine maintains a neutral stance on most things. However, a certain member, who shall remain nameless found himself staring a likely “Breakdown Trophy” down the barrel when he found that his battery was dead and needed the AA to come and replace it. With Tony Powell’s battery replaced, he to was all set to leave what had been a simply fabulous start to the events of the weekend. An extremely successful day, fabulous media coverage and an early indicator that the weekend car show could be an absolute hit. 22

National Mustang Convention The Car Show 22nd October - ANZ Viaduct Centre As a first time convention attendee, I really had no idea how it was all going to come together. First instruction be at the event centre by 0630hr so that we can start loading the cars for judging in the building, the cars for the display on the pier and allow the key sponsors and trade exhibitors a chance to get set up ready for the doors to open to the public. One Mustang did not come willingly into the judging arena, requiring a push to start Glenn Inansci‘s car. One by one, under the masterful control of Wayne Lack, the vehicles lined up and came through the doors. With the tyre check completed, they took their respective place on the exhibition floor. Frantic, last minute dusting and polishing ensued. With the cars assembled, it was time for the men in white coats to flood the floor with their clipboards, looking for dirt in wheels, specks of dust in the engine bays, a hint of road grime on the underside. In a some what Master Chef ‘esque, stop the clock, stand back from the bench moment, it was time for owners to step away and let their fate and hard work rest in the hands of the judges. Outside, despite a fairly chilly wind, the sun was shining, the crowds were out. On the second floor, a number of sponsors ranging from Mag and Turbo Warehouse, Kaspar Transmissions to Octane Books had their stands set up. On the top floor were the vehicles of interest, spanning generations of Mustangs, the PDL race Mustang, right up to the star of the show, the unveiling of Ian Neary’s “Eruption”, the 1968 Plymouth GTX, a car that has had some 14,000 hours, which if monetized is probably close to $1.0M spent on restoration. More than $5000 was raised in support of our chosen charity, the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Foundation. With the show closing at 4pm, and after an extremely successful day it was time to leave! 27

National Mustang Convention Car Run 23rd October - Helensville The sight, sounds and smell of 150 + Mustangs crammed 3 rows deep in Byron Avenue Takapuna, the tail extending around the corner into Hurstmere Road was truly a sight to behold. The Convention run tracked from Takapuna, up the Northern Motorway, then heading west out through Whenuapai, Kumeu and onto the Helensville A&P Showgrounds. Run leader, Tony Powell, briefed the drivers, and then explained the order for heading off starting with the “far queue”. A few minutes before 10 am it was time to start engines and on the hour we were off. With the traffic lights streaming green the whole way, and despite what appeared to be unusually strong police patrol presence along the way, everyone made it safely to the show grounds, well everyone that is except Mike and Kaye Kale who left in their car but arrived in the Tail end Charlie van, their car arriving on a transporter. Could Mike and Kaye be our next Breakdown Trophy winners? Turn up to the next club night to find out. With Mustangs mustered and corralled much to the apparent interest and amusement of the neighboring herd of Jersey cows, it was game time. John and Christine Lipanovich really aced it in terms of the imagination and originality of the games. With the skateboard ball gathering, see who can spell Mustang and sit in the right place, find your shoes and put them on and the rather odd conjoined pairs by a ball between two people’s head game completed, Bay of Plenty proved their prowess, possibly helped by the fact that none of their team seemed to own a pair of shoes, favoring jandals. After a leisurely lunch in the sun, it was time to head back to the Spencer and get ready for the Awards dinner. 33

National Mustang Convention Closing Breakfast 24th October 2016 - Spencer on Byron There is a well know phenomenon, that ‘down and deflated feeling’ that hangs in the air when a magnificent and significant event is drawing to a close. After what can only be described as a simply sensational Convention, it was time to say our goodbyes and for everyone to head off, some with trophies, some without but everyone reflecting on the fantastic time that they had. Assembling for breakfast, the impact of the night before was clearly evident at some tables. With Bay of Plenty being awarded both the ‘Best Participating Club’ and the ‘Push ‘n’ Grunt’ award, a final auction, Sheriff Borland’s download of reported incidents, and the leading representative of each club making their closing remark, it was over to Ian to for- mally declare the convention closed. A huge thank you has to the organising committee headed by Margaret Broadbent and featured below. From left: Craig Borland, Ian Waters, Dianna Bang, Bruce Lewis, Wayne Lack, Margaret Broadbent, Chris Fitzpatrick, Mike Adams, Steve Hawkins Supporting the committee were many helpers from within the club who gave of their time over the weekend to ensure everything moved smoothly and safely whilst at the same time making sure everybody enjoyed themselves. A special thanks also to whoever ensured that Convention and the events leading up to it bucked the weather forecast and gave us endless days of sunshine. We really could not have bought more perfect Labour Weekend weather. This coming year sees convention returning to Invercargill and is set to be action packed with laps of Teretonga Park raceway to boot. Watch for more details after Christmas so you can get your planning underway. 49
