For recycling to thrive, we need to recycle the YES thing and keep the NO things out. Auburn Hills will be conducting a Recycling Quality Improvement Program mid-April through June. Our representatives will be in your neighborhood on recycling days to open recycling carts and see what’s in them, possibly leaving behind a tag with feedback on what’s in your cart. Thanks in advance for putting the right recyclables in your cart. WHAT IS THE “FEET ON THE STREET” (FOTS) PROGRAM? The “FEET ON THE STREET” (FOTS) program coming to Auburn Hills this spring is an anti-contamination program developed by The Recycling Partnership (TRP) that is focused on optimizing the recycling system in your community. The program encompasses a combination of recycling education and recycling inspection at the curb to help drive positive behavior change that will improve the recycling for the good of the community. HOW DOES THE FOTS PROGRAM WORK? Program consists of three main communication elements: 1. Direct mail 2. Curbside Feedback (FOTS/Cart Tagging) 3. Top Issue Awareness Campaign Residents will receive a Recycling Information Card via direct mail. Quality Inspectors will then check recycling carts city-wide and tag carts found with the presence of the identified top issue contaminants with an “Oops” tag. Residents receiving an “Oops” tag will have their cart rejected for service. The resident will be asked to remove the contaminant before the next service week. Top Issue Contaminants are identified in the planning process by Waste Management. Residents will be informed of the top issues via a recycling information mailer. Within 3-4 weeks from distribution of the mailers, recycling Quality Inspectors will begin walking ahead of recycling routes and checking carts for items that should not be placed in their recycling carts. Quality Inspectors will only look for the pre-determined top issue contaminants.
