Sna at Home Welcome to Story Time at Home with the Moorestown Library! Featuring In this 9-week story time program, each week’s activities focus on a different theme and include easy-to-access e-books and videos you can find at moorestownlibrary.org/kids, a hands-on craft project, and activity sheets from Scholastic Teachables, the library’s online resource for PreK-Grade 8 printable learning materials. Your folder contains a printed packet for each week. In the packet you will find: • A picture of the week’s craft sample with basic instructions • Directions for finding the week’s featured storybook video and non-fiction selection on BookFlix • Links to story time videos on the Story Time channel featuring the Moorestown librarians • Theme-related resources from Teachables Your Story Time at Home kit also includes materials to make the craft project. You may need to supply a glue stick, tacky glue, a stapler, and/or markers or crayons. Sponsored by the Friends of the Library
Getting Started with BookFlix, Teachables, and the Story Time Channel BookFlix features video versions of popular storybooks paired with a related non-fiction read along book and extension activities such as word puzzles, sequencing activities, related websites and more. It is available at moorestownlibrary.org/kids. • Click on the BookFlix button and then enter your library card barcode to get started. • Once you’re in BookFlix, enter the title of the week’s book selection in the Title Search box in the top right corner of the screen. Click the magnifying glass to search. • Click on the storybook to “Watch the Story.” You can click the toggle button beneath the window to turn on the read along feature. • Click “Read the Book” to explore the nonfiction selection. Turn the pages by clicking the sequence of dots at the bottom of the window. Turn on the read along feature and control its pace by using the buttons at the top of the window. • Select additional activities from the menu on the left side of the screen. Teachables offers an extensive collection of printable worksheets in all subject areas for learners in grades PreK-8. Your packet includes a selection of theme-related resources already printed for you each week. To find more learning material on Teachables, go to moorestownlibrary.org/kids. • Click on the button for “Learning at Home.” • Click on the Scholastic Teachables logo. • Log in with your library card barcode. • Search by grade level, subject, standards, theme, genre, and/or Guided Reading level to find materials. Be sure to check out each week’s playlist of stories and songs featuring your very own Moorestown librarians on the Story Time channel, available at moorestownlibrary.org/kids. Week 1: Sheep and Farms Dates: March 1-7 Craft: Clothespin Sheep Instructions: Glue the google eyes onto the sheep’s face. Dip the small pink pompom in a bit of glue and put it place for the sheep’s nose. Dip the cotton balls in glue and cover the sheep’s body. Clip the clothespins in place for legs. Your sheep can now stand up! BookFlix selections: Giggle, Giggle, Quack/Living on Farms
Week 2: Saint Patrick’s Day and Rainbows Dates: March 8-14 Craft: Leprechaun Puppet Instructions: Glue the oval paper lengthwise onto the bottom of the bag, being careful not to glue the flap of the bag down. Glue the orange strips in place to make the leprechaun’s eyebrows and beard. Glue the google eyes and button nose in place. Glue the large yellow buckle to the large black rectangle and glue the rectangle across the middle of the bag. Glue the small yellow buckle to the small black strip and glue it onto the hat. Glue the hat to the top of the leprechaun’s head. Give your leprechaun a smile! BookFlix selections: Planting a Rainbow/It Could Still be a Flower
Week 3: Snails and Hermit Crabs Dates: March 15-21 Craft: Button Snail Instructions: Cover the CD with tacky glue and put buttons all over it. Glue the CD to the snail’s body. Glue the google eyes in place. Draw on a smile. Bend the pipe cleaner in the middle and glue it to the back of the snail’s head. BookFlix selections: Peanut Butter and Jellyfish/My Home in the Water
Week 4: Ladybugs Dates: March 22-28 Craft: Ladybug Stick Puppet Instructions: Glue the black tear drop shaped paper to the curved top of the red paper to make the ladybug‘s head. Glue the google eyes and the small pink pipe cleaner in place for a mouth. Glue the legs onto the back, 3 on each side. Tape the pipe cleaners onto the back of the ladybug’s head. Use a black marker to draw dots on the ladybug’s body. BookFlix selections: Bugs! Bugs! Bugs!/A Ladybug Larva Grows Up
Week 5: Bunnies Dates: March 29-April 4 Craft: Bunny Greeting Card Instructions: Fold the egg shaped paper in half from top to bottom so the pieces meet; color the inside of the bunny ears; glue the bunny ears to the back of the card with a glue stick or tacky glue so the color faces forward; add detail to the bunny ‘feet’; attach the feet to the bottom of the back of the card (make sure they are even on both sides so the bunny card is able to stand up); glue the google eggs to the front of the card near the top; bend the pipe cleaners in half and glue the bended side to the center of the card under the eyes; glue the pom-pom nose on top of your pipe cleaners; add a mouth with marker; open up your bunny card and add a personal message! Week 6: Butterflies Dates: April 5-11 Craft: Insanely Fun Butterfly Wrist Puppet Instructions: Glue the head of the butterfly to the end of the body; glue the butterfly wings to each side of the body as shown; glue google eyes to the butterfly head and add a mouth with marker; use the stickers to decorate your butterfly body; add the colored pom-poms for additional decoration; turn over your butterfly and attached the brown band with tacky glue or tape to the center of the body; measure the band to your own wrist and cut off excess; staple the band closed. Move your hand up and down and see your butterfly flap its wings! BookFlix selections: Waiting for Wings/Butterflies
Week 7: Rain Dates: April 12-18 Craft: Umbrella Headband Instructions: Glue handle to umbrella and glue or tape umbrella to rounded part of headband. Then, have fun gluing on raindrops, flowers, and pompoms! BookFlix selections: Come on, Rain!/Rainy Weather Days
Week 8: Spring and Flowers Dates: April 19-25 Craft: Spring Wreath Instructions: Start by gluing large flowers onto paper plate. Glue pompoms onto center of flowers. Fill in areas between with smaller flowers and bugs and you have a beautiful spring wreath! BookFlix selections: Miss Rumphius/From Seed to Dandelion
Week 9: Trees Dates: April 26-May 2 Craft: Cherry Blossom Tree Follow the instructions included in your craft kit to assemble your spring cherry blossom tree. BookFlix selections: Chicka Chicka Boom Boom!/Let’s Have Fun with Alphabet Riddles
