From the Principal Tēnā koutou, Talofa lava, Mālō e lelei, Dia duit. Dear Parents, Guardians & Whānau, It is my pleasure to write to you in this first newsletter of the year. We have had a positive start to the school year with many social events to reconnect us after the holidays. Thank you to all our whanau who have attended these events. We value your input and partnership that will help us achieve the best for your girls. This year sees the biggest intake of year 9 students at SHC as well as an increase of students to our year 10 cohort. The junior school has great energy and a beautiful spirit this year and our senior girls are enjoying connecting with our younger students, building a strong sisterhood already. We started the year with outstanding NCEA results which we recognised at our Academic Assembly on the 23rd February. (These results are published later in the newsletter). Our Maori and pacific peoples achievement is the same or above in some cases, as are our NZ European achievement which is something we are very proud of at SHC. These achievements are no surprise given the research conducted by business ‘think tank the NZ Initiative’, produced in association with the New Zealand Herald. Finding that ‘one’s chances of finishing school with UE can be increased by 8.3 percentage points by sending them to an integrated school’. I believe it is our Faith that has helped ensure all our girls at SHC achieve their God given potential. This month I have attended two meetings with the Hawkes Bay Principals, Hastings District Council, and representa- tives from the fruit industry. Hawkes Bay is facing a crisis in this area because of the lack of experienced seasonal workers coming from overseas to pick fruit and work in the pack houses. We are looking at forming a partnership with this industry to try and save the fruit and thousands of jobs. They are asking for students to work through the next two-week holidays to pick fruit and work in the pack houses. They will assist students to get set up as an employee, induct and train, transport and pay above minimum wage. They will also mentor and work alongside our young people who show an interest in this industry or in a qualification that could lead to working in this industry. I am excit- ed about this opportunity for our young people. This is a main employer in Hawkes bay ranging form engineers, food scientists to logistics. The industry is willing to invest in our youth to develop a skilled workforce for our region, while paying them. If your daughter is interested in this opportunity, please contact our careers advisor Mrs. Price at bprice@sacredheartnapier.school.nz. Thank you to all the parents who have volunteered to support the extracurricular life of the school as sports coach, manager or helper for Fia Fia. Without you we would not be able to offer the choice of activates to our girls. It is more important now more than ever that we have a range of activities on offer and that we continue to encourage our young girls to be active and involved. This has proven to increase wellbeing and a feeling of belonging which in turn promotes a healthy mental and spiritual mind. The girls are very grateful, as am I, for your time and commitment to ensure they have these opportunities. Finally, I wish Mrs Jowett-Morel all the best as she embarks on study leave to complete her Master of Education (Literacy Education) at Massey University. While she is on leave Mrs Read will be taking over her English and Drama classes. Mrs. Read comes to us from Havelock North High School and is an experienced teacher who will add value to our staff. I look forward to seeing you during March at our Whanau Hui, Fia Fia celebrations and sporting events. God Bless Maria Neville-Foster Principal
Special Character Opening Mass We celebrated a beautiful Opening and Leaders Mass at St Patrick’s Church on the 12th February. Ash Wednesday Liturgy The Ash Wednesday Liturgy was changed due to lockdown restrictions and the Bishop’s stating that there would be no imposition of ashes. The Liturgy was a prayerful reflection on the significance of Lent and the work of Caritas. Leaders Camp The DRS spoke at the Leaders Camp on Catholic Leadership and “being the best version that they can be” as we are all encour- aged to be by Pope Francis. DRS Conference The DRS is joining the Principal for a combined conference in Palmerston North from 24 -26th February. The theme of the Conference is, “Body of Christ: United on Mission. Pastoral Care At Sacred Heart College we have a strong commitment to pastoral care and seek to provide a safe, nurturing environment in which your daughters can strive to be the best they can be. Please feel free to contact your daughter’s Tutor Teacher if you have any specific questions. The Tutor Teacher is the first point of reference for the student and will be involved with pastoral care, specifically: guidance and mentoring, uniform checks, administration - such as attendance concerns and en- couraging involvement in school activities. If you have greater concerns, please contact the appropriate House Dean as listed below. Aubert House Dean Dr Amanda Aarons aarons@sacredhearthapier.school.nz Barbier House Dean Mrs Henrietta Hillman hhillman@sacredheartnapier.school.nz Holderness House Dean Mrs Ashton Jamieson ajamieson@sacredheartnapier.school.nz Marian House Dean Mrs Edina McFarland emcfarland@sacredheartnapier.school.nz Additional Pastoral contacts: Guidance counselling services: Miss Tracey Pinfold tpinfold@sacredheartnapier.school.nz School Nurse: Debbie Williams is on site three days a week assisting students with all health-related matters including, but not restricted to: wellness checks, hearing or eyesight issues, allergies, skin conditions, eating issues, questions about periods, weight control, stress or anxiety. Debbie is contactable during the day on 027 233 0157. Attendance We encourage all students to be at school every day that we are open. This will help them to maximise their learning opportunities. It is important however that if the students are unwell, they stay home for the day. The student’s absence must be notified to the school either by phone, email or a message on the app. Please endeavour to make any extra appointments out of school time to reduce interruptions to curriculum time. Safety Please take care when you are driving and parking to drop off and pick up students in the surrounding streets. The roads do get very congested and students can make poor decisions when they are asked to run to a car because it is double parked. Consider parking further away or arriving a little later, and please do not park across driveways. Students must not be dropped off or picked up in our carpark please. IT Management and Cyber Safety Each year level at school has now received a presentation on our Sacred Heart E-Learning expectations and guidance around cyber safety. The workshop included focus areas of: our Sacred Heart Cyber Agreement, device organisation and making good choices online. Students were reminded that they must have their device with them every day, fully charged and prepared for every lesson. Please refer to our school website or contact us should you require support with ensuring your daughter has a suitable device. If you have any concerns regarding online issues we strongly recommend the NetsafeNZ site. Also contact Tutor Teachers and or Deans if you would like to alert the school to issues that we can assist with. Netsafe is New Zealand’s independent, non-profit online safety organisation. Taking a technology-positive approach to the challenges digital technology presents. Working to help people in New Zealand take advantage of the opportunities available through technology by providing practical tools, support and advice for managing online challenges. 2021 Theme—Small Actions Change the World “How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.” (Anne Frank) One of life’s greatest secrets maybe that we never have to wait to change. Though it may take some time to see the results of our efforts. Many people describe “aha” moments in their lives when they experienced clarity of thought, they made a decision, and then they experienced change. The truth is that we can begin our campaign of change at this very moment. All Small actions change the world This year our theme is prompting our students to take small actions: • Being polite in the classroom.. • Being respectful during prayer time. • Being kind to your fellow students in words and actions both in and outside of school. • Being involved in all the school activities. • Being actively engaged with the sisterhood of Sacred Heart. • Being present in our Parish community by attending College Masses • Deepen their understanding of the mission of the RNDM sisters both past and present past and present. Shrove Tuesday Sisterhood in action! To celebrate Shrove Tuesday (also known as Pancake Day) the SHC students came together to make and enjoy pancakes together. Pancakes are associated with Shrove Tuesday, the day preceding Lent, because they are a way to use up foods such as eggs, milk, and sugar, before the fasting season of the 40 days of Lent. Powhiri On Wednesday 3 February a full school Powhiri was held to welcome in our new students, staff and whanau.
