February 2020 February awareness campaign is focused on TEEN DATING February 6: screening VIOLENCE. FEBRUARY 2020 How Dating Violence Can Lead to Drug and Alcohol Abuse Several studies show a direct correlation between experiencing dating violence and an increased likelihood of alcohol and drug use. Teenage girls who experience dating violence are more likely to binge drink compared to their peers who are not in abusive relationships, while teen boys who experience dating violence are more likely to use marijuana as young adults compared to their peers, according to a study in Pediatrics. New research draws a clear connection between dating violence in young people and prescription drug abuse. And those who experience physical dating violence are more likely to smoke and use drugs, among other risky behaviors, compared to peers who did not experience abuse. If you or your student is struggling with mental health and/or substance use problems, remember you are not alone AND there are resources! Don't be afraid to reach out. You can always reach out to your insurance provider OR call/visit 2-1-1 Arizona for a full list of resources available to you and your family. A partial list of community agencies that provide treatment for drugs or alcohol: Aurora, Doorways, Evolve Treatment Centers, Footprints to Recovery, Oasis Behavioral Health, Quail Run Behavioral Health, and Transitions Counseling and Consulting (This is a partial list of community agencies and is provided solely for your reference. FEBRUARY 2020 Devils 4 Devils summit recap: Titans had the chance to meet with staff from ASU's counseling department and Active Minds organization to learn how to respond to the emotional needs of their peers using V.A.R. V: validate their feelings, let them know what they're feeling is okay and that you believe them A: appreciate their courage, speaking up can be a challenging step, show them you are there to support them R: refer them to skills and support, let them know help is available and refer them to appropriate resources. FEBRUARY 2020 January Round Up: Students were welcomed back to campus with a refresher on the school's drug and alcohol policy, which includes vaping and vaping products. Students were reminded that this is a drug free campus. Any student found vaping/ using drugs/alcohol or with vaping/drug paraphernalia will be suspended from school. No exceptions. Thank you to Mr. Luse's Film class for helping make a PSA on the school's policy on drugs and alcohol that will be coming out in February! Jake White presented on alternatives to drinking and using drugs to classes that opted in.Students and parents received an additional email this month with facts and resources on recognizing when your child is using drugs and alcohol and resources available to you and your family. This month there was three bulletin boards created around campus (in the library, Ms. Johnson's office, and in the Wellness Center) highlighting the importance of mental health, coping skills that students can use to decrease symptoms of anxiety and depression, apps that they can use to reduce stress and anxiety, as well as a list of hotlines they can access 24/7 365 days a year. REMEMBER YOU ARE NOT ALONE! Attached to this months newsletter is the partial list of hotlines that anyone can access by calling/texting/ or chat with a trained professional or peer support. Remember you can always contact your insurance provider for what services are covered OR if you do not have insurance or just want to know what resources are available to you in your community, you can always call 2-1-1 or visit 211Arizona.org for more information and resources.
