APRIL 2021 I ISSUE 5 THE SPIRAL Spirit Education Foundation Alumni Newsletter Welcome to the fifth edition of the Spiral - the Spirit Education Foundation Alumni newsletter. The Spiral is one of the ways to keep you as Spirit Alumni connected to and in touch with the foundation, an opportunity to share your news with us and fellow Alumni, to find out what's been happening in the life of the foundation, for sharing of exciting opportunities, as well as possible ways to get involved. While there have been fewer opportunities for face-to-face events and activities during the Covid-19 pandemic which we have all greatly missed (no Spirit camp, no large group gatherings, no face- to-face alumni events!) we are committed to remaining connected and in touch with you in whatever ways that we are able to. We so appreciate the ways in which many of you reach out and stay connected, whether it be via WhatsApp, Zooms calls, offering extra tuition to Spirit scholars, or be it just a message to say hello - thank you! 2020 was a difficult year for most, and four months into 2021 we know that many of these challenges continue, with new ones arising. A quote from one of our favourite books, The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse by Charlie Mackesy says: "I can't see a way through, said the boy. "Can you see your next step?" "Yes" "Just take that," said the horse. We hope that despite the challenges that you may face along the road this year, that even if you, like the boy, cannot see a way through, that you may have the courage for just the next step. We look forward to hearing from you and connecting with you through the year. Love and best wishes from the Spirit Team - Paula, Saskia and Nzele

Please bear in mind the following relating to our scholarship application process and criteria: Spirit Education Foundation scholarships are provided from Grade 8 until the end of Grade 12 Our primary intake year is Grade 8 - we do not usually enroll scholars in higher grades (i.e. if a scholarship is not awarded for Grade 8, the scholar is unable to reapply the following year) Applications are open between September and October each year Scholars who are in Grade 6, who meet the academic requirements (obtain Code 6 / 7 on Grade 6 Term 2 report for Maths, Natural Science and Home Language) as well as financial requirements (combined household income no more than R20 000 per month) are eligible to apply. Application forms are available on Spirit Education Foundation website (www.spiriteducationfoundation.org) during the specified application period or contact scholarships@spiriteducationfoundation.org for more information. The Spirit Education Foundation does not apply to high schools on the family's behalf - parents are responsible to apply to high schools for their child. The Spirit Education Foundation enrolls on average 20 new scholars per year in Grade 8. Due to the high volume of applications we are unable to consider late applications. Our scholarship applications for Grade 8 in 2022 are closed, applications for Grade 8 in 2023 will open in September 2021.
The newest group of graduates joining the Spirit Education Foundation Alumni Society are our 13 matriculants of 2020. With a 100% pass rate, 12 bachelor’s passes and an astounding total of 40 individual subject distinctions among them, we really could not be prouder, with confidence that the dedication, resilience and determination demonstrated by each one will continue on their road ahead. With fields of study such as Marine Biology, Medicine, Dentistry, BCom Accounting, Social Work, BCom Information Systems, BA Politics and Law, BSc Water and Environmental Science to name but a few, this is indeed an incredibly bright bunch with most promising futures ahead. We have no doubt that this group of young leaders will indeed impact their families and greater communities and that this impact will extend for generations to come. YOUTH DAY RUN!
