The aim of the campaign was to increase public awareness that the emergency hormonal contraception (EHC) pill is available to women directly from a pharmacist up to five days (120 hours) following unprotected sex. The EHC pill can be used as an effective secondary method to prevent a crisis pregnancy, when contraception has failed or has not been used. IPU NEWS IPU meets with Sinn Féin Health Spokesperson The IPU held a comprehensive meeting with Sinn Féin’s Spokesperson on Health, Deputy Louise O’Reilly TD, in November. IPU President Daragh Connolly, Director of Communications and Strategy, Jim Curran, and Press and Communications Manager, Sinéad Fennell, attended the meeting, which was held in Leinster House. The meeting provided an opportunity for the IPU to brief Deputy O’Reilly on the vital role pharmacists are playing in the primary healthcare continuum of care and how, by allowing pharmacists to work to their full scope, will help to deliver better patient outcomes by alleviating the pressure on other areas in the health service. Discussions centred on FEMPI and IPU policy proposals, which offered pharmacy-based solutions to primary healthcare deficits in the areas of access to contraception, a Minor Ailment Scheme, New Medicine Service, chronic disease management, biosimilar medicines policy and the Brexit concerns of Irish pharmacy. Deputy O’Reilly was very engaged on the areas that were discussed and it was agreed that we would have further engagement on these, and other matters, towards addressing the issues that affect our members and their patients. IPU Conference 2019 The IPU National Pharmacy Conference will take place on 10 – 12 May in the Galmont Hotel (formerly the Radisson), Galway city.
