(Wear your favorite pajamas) March 27th – March 31st – No School, Spring Break ☺ Highlights from the Amazon Classroom: Here is what the Amazon students are learning this month: Science/Social Studies: Students will learn how different fairytale/folktale characters demonstrate our six character traits (or sometimes don’t!) Students will work to plan, design, and build a Leprechaun trap to carefully capture a leprechaun. They are known to sneak around Kindergarten classrooms during the first few weeks of March! Math: Students have done a great job writing equations for a given addition and subtraction problem. Students will continue to build their subtraction knowledge through fairytale/folktale story problems. Through exposure to new Montessori math works, the students will deepen their understanding of place value. Students will work to compose, write, and identify numbers 20-30. Literacy: We will kick off ‘March is Reading Month’ by reading 8 fairytales/folktales. Students will learn to identify the characters, setting, and beginning, middle, and end of the story. Additionally, students will practice retelling the important parts of the story to the class, a partner, and to their family. Digging deeper, students will try to compare and contrast two stories by finding ways they are similar and ways that they are different. Students will continue to learn new sight words and work to identify and read aloud sight words in the fairytales/folktales introduced this month. Writing: Students will work on a large project this month that showcases their knowledge of retelling a story. All students will work collaboratively in their literacy groups to create a vignette. Individually, students will choose to create a book, puppet show, comic strip, story path, or personal vignette to retell their chosen fairytale/folktale. Students will continue to practice putting spaces between each word in their sentence and using a period, exclamation point, or question mark to end their thought. The students will also work to reread their work and edit it before presenting it to the class. Social/Emotional: This month, students will learn and discuss the themes in fairy tales/folktales that the author wanted us to learn. They will try to put these ideas into practice around the room and at home. Additionally, students will learn more about how to be encouraging as they embark on a large retell project. The students will encourage their classmates and make encouraging comments after each presentation. Students will also work on cooperation and collaboration as they build leprechaun traps and create group vignettes. Art Projects: Students will create multiple projects related to the fairytales/folktales that we read in class. They will also create a large retell project that will come home, alongside a portfolio outlining their process leading up to the completion of their large project. Students will work together to create a hallway display of the fairytales/folktales that we read to encourage other students in the school to read these stories and others.
