TRAINING EVENT & TRADE SHOW THURSDAY, FEB. 20 PASSENGER CAR / LIGHT TRUCK / TECHNICAL / MANAGEMENT Morning: 8:00 am – 11:15 am • Afternoon: 1:00 pm – 4:15 pm Electrical Systems Power Management - Impact on HVAC Operation PETER ORLANDO Carquest Technical Institute Winter Complaint - “My rear defogger, heated seats and mirrors don’t seem to be working right.” Is it truly a systems malfunction or is the vehicle load shedding? Summer Complaint - “My A/C needs a charge.” Is it an A/C problem or is the vehicle load shedding? Can the HVAC system on a modern vehicle be telling us that there’s a bad battery on board? YES! What percentage of time will the HVAC system be cycled OFF during a load shed level 3 event on a 2017 Chevy Malibu? Are there levels of load shedding? YES! The customer’s awareness of this will begin gradually, and eventually they’ll bring the vehicle in for service. The technician will usually find ABSOLUTELY NOTHING wrong with the A/C or heating system. The modern power management system on today’s vehicles is vastly different than just a few years ago. We are now measuring, calculating, and reporting the voltage, current, temperature, state of charge, health, and function across multiple networks to optimize vehicle performance. Ever realize you left the headlights on, and wonder how the battery didn’t go dead overnight? The answer is Power Management. However, as the vehicle begins to age, so does the battery. Consumer convenience of certain climate control system functions will be impeded, and at times, not appear to be working at all. The key to all of this is knowing what climate control systems functionality will be impacted by any electrical system deficiencies or degradation. The class will include checking vital signs with a scan tool; load shed criteria and load reduction level counters; understanding net battery amp hours; proactive alerts: diagnostics and prognostics. Students that take this seminar will have a thorough understanding of domestic system load shedding, and the effect it has on HVAC system functionality. The Challenge of Change; HVAC Technology Changes that Make Modern Air Conditioning Systems more Challenging to Diagnose and Repair PETER McARDLE Four Seasons A myriad of changes to systems design and operation over the past ten to fifteen years can make diagnosing and repairing a modern air conditioning system diabolically difficult. The greater use of computer controls including volume flow sensors, eVDCs (electronically controlled variable displacement compressors), electro-viscous fan clutches, evaporator thermistors, multi-speed cooling fans, active grille shutters, dual zone systems etc. can really darken your diagnostic day. Couple these technologies with changes in basic component design such as the use of flat tube, multi-pass, multi-path flow, sub-cooling condensers, idle stop evaporators, oil retention compressors etc. and it can be overwhelming to know where to begin your diagnosis of a poorly performing system. “Join us for this class at MACS 2020 when we will explain some of these changes in detail and their impact on system operation and diagnostics. We will look at some of the issues and failures associated with these technologies and how best to cut to the diagnostic chase.” Nissan and Infinity New Technologies ED SIMMONS Nissan-USA HVAC Systems to include the following: R-134a transition to R-1234yf refrigerant on current and future models. 2019 LEAF electric vehicle climate control. PTC heater booster system found on Titan diesel and LEAF vehicles. Networking of climate control systems. Nashville Notes: NIGHT LIFE! JOSE MIGUEL New Alternatives Policy (SNAP) Program, will FARQUHARSON INGVARDSEN DIAZ SASTRE update attendees on the Agency’s current SNAP regulations and activities impacting the mobile air conditioning industry. MICHAEL R. INGVARDSEN • Nissens Automotive A/S With increased focus on fuel economy and exhaust levels of cars in Europe, A/C systems have been developed and improved at a pace not seen before. EU demand for manufacturers to improve range have also had serious impacts. Buyers now have high expectations for system performance, even in smaller vehicles with 0.8 liter engines. Serious changes are required to accommodate both buyers and EU regulations. Micro and macro tube condensers, ECV compressors, electronic expansion valves as well as the change in refrigerant and oil have been a challenge for manufacturers and the European aftermarket. New technologies demand in-depth training and understanding of A/C systems to ensure a qualified diagnostic procedure. Why do ECV compressors break down quicker than fixed displacement? Is component structure the same? Is system load the same? Has the system endured severe heat load or is it just designed to the minimum standard? All these questions must be answered to understand A/C systems in European vehicles today, and to determine the root cause of system failure. JOSE MIGUEL DIAZ SASTRE • Sanden International Europe The speaker will address electrification of the motor vehicle and the impacts that will have on the A/C technician, including how powertrain cooling systems work, their differences to what we currently see in today’s vehicles, service tips and pitfalls. This clinic also will review typical testing scenarios and demonstrate why the typical methodologies don’t work and give you a strategy that will work. To Install or Not to Install (Afternoon) RICK WHITE 180BIZ Inevitably a customer or potential customer will compare your part pricings to a retail parts store. The customer can get parts “cheaper” than you can, right? It’s an uncomfortable situation for many auto repair shop owners. Under pressure you feel compelled to use parts supplied by the customer. Shop owners and managers are often unaware of the pitfalls and liabilities when they agree to install these very same parts. Some work is better than no work – right? In this seminar, I examine those pitfalls. I’ll offer alternatives to help you make the right decision “to install or not to install” with more of the facts. Get that work without installing someone else’s parts. Climate Control Sensor and Actuator Diagnostics KARL SCHNEIDER Robert Bosch The days of simple air conditioning and heating repairs are long gone, which means the strategy for diagnosing these systems needs to change. Today’s climate control systems are fully integrated, using a complex vehicle network with shared modules, sensors and actuators. The answer for the customer’s concern could be a simple sensor failure or a stuck actuator blend door. This session sponsored by Bosch will help you develop a solid strategy for diagnosing the complete system, which will ensure the issue is diagnosed accurately and efficiently the first time. Is Spock in the House? Modern Climate Control Logical Procedures JIM WILSON AVI We’ve come a long way since only using gauges and checking temperatures. As vehicles have become more complex, we need to adapt to changing technology. But at the same time, we can’t forget the essential steps and tests to baseline the system before trying to fix the customer’s concerns. This class covers those steps, plus testing various sensors and actuators on the system. The use of scan tools, DVOM, lab scopes, amp probes and learning to read wiring diagrams, especially those euro-types, needs to be part of your diagnostic arsenal. Remember, a logical procedure from beginning to end will always help! 10
