BBC Education Content Brief KS2 Topic Resources: Ancient Egypt April 2020 Introduction to BBC Education: Thank for your interest in this commissioning brief. This commissioning round is being run and managed by BBC Education - part of BBC Children’s and Education. The department is responsible for delivering the BBC’s Royal Charter commitments to commission and produce educational and learning content, to help with both formal and informal learning outcomes, for use throughout the United Kingdom. One of our aims is to promote and support formal educational goals for children and teenagers, meeting the requirements of the different national curricula, by producing engaging learning content for use in the classroom. Some of our current brands that support formal learning in UK classrooms are: BBC Teach: home to the BBC’s teacher-facing content for Early Years, Primary and Secondary education and Teacher Support. BBC Bitesize: providing children, young people and adults across the UK with personalised curriculum-linked resources to support their education. BBC Learning Campaigns: large scale, impactful initiatives that aim to tackle a societal or cultural deficit - often in partnership with others. Media use in the classroom and the provision of media in schools is a fast-changing environment. The days of broadcast content for schools and teachers setting VCRs in the middle of the night to record it are long gone. With the increased use of the internet in classrooms teachers now have unprecedented access to a whole range of resources to help with delivering the curriculum. Teachers come to the BBC because it is a trusted brand and a recognised provider of quality teaching resources. The content we are seeking to commission will be available to teachers through our BBC Teach brand, a dedicated teaching resource site at www.bbc.com/teach. BBC Teach: BBC Teach is home to all of the BBC’s teacher-facing content and brings together thousands of educational short films and associated support materials on one site. BBC Teach is working closely with teacher groups to identify gaps in our short-form provision and to commission the right content to fill them. 2
BBC Education Content Brief KS2 Topic Resources: Ancient Egypt April 2020 BBC Teach - Key Stage 2 Topics: Ancient Egypt The content we will be commissioning will support BBC Teach’s provision for KS2 - that is, children aged 7 to 11 years old. The content will be cross-curricular in nature, supporting a range of learning objectives from across the curriculum through study of the popular History topic Ancient Egypt. The content will comprise both factual and narrative content. It will also include the animation of five songs, the audio for which will be supplied by the BBC. It is anticipated that the content will be predominantly animated, though it may include other styles including creative use of stills and graphics, etc alongside the animation. The artwork and artefacts of Ancient Egypt provide a wonderfully rich visual resource and we’d like to see that reflected in the style of animation. However, the health and safety of your production team is of course paramount, and it’s crucial that the styles chosen can be achieved within the current lockdown and social distancing conditions. What we want: This commission is for approximately 45 minutes of video in total, arranged as: 5 x 4-minute factual episodes, each episode with a clearly defined editorial scope and purpose. 3 x 4-minute narrative episodes, telling a ‘story’ but consolidating learning from the factual episodes. 5 x 2 to 2.5-minute songs – catchy songs that will also help children to consolidate their learning. Please note: the BBC will provide the audio for the five songs and the lyrics. The subject of the songs aligns very closely with the proposed content of the factual episodes (see below), so we anticipate the animation for the songs drawing heavily on the visual assets already created. 4 x 30-second social media promotions - promoting the full range and scope of the content. The factual episodes: It is anticipated that these will cover some or all of the following topics: Society and culture – an overview / geographical location / the Nile / food / pharaohs / pyramids / children / animals / hieroglyphs / etc Gods and goddesses - the main gods and goddess of Ancient Egypt and their role / beliefs about death and the afterlife / preparation for the afterlife / etc The River Nile – the significance of the River Nile to Ancient Egypt / settlement along the Nile / transport and travel along the Nile / flooding and irrigation of crops / etc 3
BBC Education Content Brief KS2 Topic Resources: Ancient Egypt April 2020 Pyramids – the purpose of pyramids / their construction / the development of pyramids / the Great Pyramid of Giza / etc King Tutankhamun and the discovery of his tomb in 1922 – Howard Carter’s excavations / the Valley of the Kings / the discovery of the tomb / the artefacts found in the tomb / recording the artefacts / what we can learn from the discoveries It is essential that the factual episodes also promote the aims of historical enquiry as outlined in the KS2 History curriculum, including how we use historical evidence to make historical claims and appreciating how and why there can be contrasting interpretations of the past. The narrative episodes: There is a degree of flexibility with these episodes. They may choose to ‘tell a story’ – for example, tell one or more of the Ancient Egyptian creation myths. They might also relate other myths or ancient stories from Ancient Egypt. They might also allow a child-friendly approach to the content of the factual episodes by covering ‘a day in the life of…’ – that is, following an individual figure within Ancient Egyptian society and their everyday life. The songs: The audio and lyrics for these will be provided by the BBC. The aim of the songs is to consolidate the learning of the factual and narrative content through catchy melodies and lyrics, while extending the curriculum objectives into Music. The supplier will need to animate the lyrics of the songs line by line in time to the music. It is anticipated that the visual assets required for any additional animation of the songs will have been created for the factual / narrative episodes. Social media: Additionally, we require four short films, typically 30 seconds long, that can be used on social media to showcase the content to teachers. These should draw on - but not be directly lifted from - the main films. Presentation should include eye-catching text and graphics and, where appropriate, subtitles. One or more of the films could feature an ‘expert’ – an inspiring KS2 practitioner or consultant – describing the content and/or modelling its use in the classroom. Additionally, we require the text for a set of Teacher Notes that will guide teachers in their use of the content and offer: an overview of the content links to the curriculum included in the content, by subject any necessary supporting information, including stills and graphics suggestions for how the video content can be used to range even more widely across the curriculum - eg extend the topic into dance, drama, mathematics, science, etc. 4
BBC Education Content Brief KS2 Topic Resources: Ancient Egypt April 2020 Additionally, all of the content should: be sensitive to a diverse audience, including the national regions of the UK. be engaging and accessible to the entire audience regardless of gender, ethnicity, disability, culture, ability, sexuality or gender identification. be educationally robust, with all the content devised and delivered in consultation with an educational consultant. give attention to ensuring the longevity of the content, particularly with regard to any props such as technology (mobile phones etc) and the way the participants are styled/dressed. give particular attention to ensuring the content has appeal to the specific age group – that is, children aged 7-11 years old. Education Consultant: You will need to work with and contract an educational specialist/consultant who will be involved throughout the process to ensure all learning objectives are covered and content is accurate and relevant. Your consultant should provide advice on which content is the most useful for the audience, as well as reflecting the requirements of the national curricula and guidance for schools. All content (ie concepts, initial scripts, final scripts, rough cuts, fine cuts, audio etc) will need to be reviewed by the consultant before they are sent to us. Scripts: BBC Education requires full consultation during the scripting process, including the viewing of drafts to ensure scripts hit the learning points, and full sign off on completed scripts. Please allow time in your schedule for BBC reviews. Budget: The BBC Learning tariff ranges from £500 to £2000 per minute for video content. Budget is dependent on the idea and editorial ambition. Your budgeting should not assume the BBC will deliver archive at no cost. BBC Education Content Brief KS2 Topic Resources: Ancient Egypt April 2020 than 10% of the total fee on signature, no less than 35% of the total fee on final acceptance of (i) project delivery and (ii) post-production paperwork and the remainder of the payments against delivery milestones as agreed within the budget summary. Proposed payment schedule: 10% on signature of agreement. 25% on script sign off. 30% on sign-off of all rough cuts and metadata. 35% on BBC acceptance of full delivery, final paperwork and post-production paperwork. Documentation: The following post-production documentation must be completed: Post-production paperwork must be completed on Silvermouse. Details will be outlined in the contract to the awarded commission. Post-production transcript – time-coded. Online compliance form. Deliverables: HD video delivered in H264 MP4 format with separate audio tracks; subtitle files (XML) http://www.bbc.co.uk/guides/zmgnng8, .mov and subtitled video (1:1 as well as 16:9 aspect ratio versions) for social media films. Post-production paperwork. Text for accompanying Teacher Notes in Word.doc format. All underlying source files of artwork as layered files – either PSD or AI. Proposals: Proposals should be provided as either MS Word documents or PDFs. They should be a maximum of 15 pages long. Any large files (over 5mb) should be delivered separately from the proposal itself (via a password-protected video site or secure file transfer). Proposals should include: A clear editorial vision: an overall vision for the films and the different approaches that may be adopted between them, depending on subject matter. Schedule and Budget breakdown. Suggestions for key talent if a presenter etc are to be used. Evidence of your capacity to deliver the content.
