Sunday, August 29, 2021 – All Aboard the Sea Wolf Following breakfast, we are transferred and embark on the Sea Wolf around 8:30 a.m. After introductions and orientation, we cruise up bay to Geike Inlet for our first paddle and introduction to kayaking. After lunch, we continue paddling through this beautiful fjord where we may catch glimpses of black bears, wolverines, mountain goats and a large variety of seabirds and ducks. Once back aboard we cruise to our evening anchorage which will encompass incredible vistas, wildlife on the beaches and possibly acrobatic whales in the waters. We learn about the natural history of Glacier Bay, some of the research projects that the park is conducting and of course about the plentiful sea and wildlife. Following dinner aboard the Sea Wolf you can take in the sunset over Glacier Bay. Accommodation: Sea Wolf (B,L,D) Monday, August 30, 2021 – Glacier Bay, AK Breakfast at 8:00 AM and then we are off for a hike to Reid Glacier which gives us an up- close view of this glacially carved landscape. A moderately easy hike up the mountain, down to the beach and fording a few glacial streams brings us to the face of Reid Glacier. Here we learn about glaciers geology, plant and animal succession and explore amidst the grounded icebergs. We hunt for ice worms and, for those so inclined, we scoop up glacial silt for wonderful facials. Along the intertidal walk back, we look under rocks and discover what the bears feast on during low tide. Coastal brown bears, wolves, moose, wolverine, small mammals, harbor seals and other creatures all live in this area. Lunch underway as we head to Johns Hopkins Inlet for an epic paddle at the most dramatic glacier in the bay. Once we are back on board, we cruise through Russell Cut on our way to our evening anchorage and we enjoy dinner. Accommodation: Sea Wolf (B,L,D)
Tuesday, August 31, 2021 – Glacier Bay After an 8:00 AM breakfast we are off to Lamplugh Glacier for an amazing hike through the iceberg strewn shores and up for a ridgetop view down the length of Lamplugh glacier. Lunch underway as we cruise up Tarr Inlet where the Grand Pacific and Marjorie Glaciers cascade into the water. We then have a wonderful paddle along a sheer cliff, which is a Kittiwake and Puffin rookery and continue paddling out in front of Marjorie Glacier for a breathtaking experience as we watch an active calving glacier from a safe distance. Following our paddle we cruise to our next anchorage and enjoy dinner. Accommodation: Sea Wolf (B,L,D) Wednesday September 1 – Glacier Bay Breakfast at 8:00 AM. We will soon be underway to S. Marble Island to view a large Steller sea lion haul out and a seabird- nesting rookery from the Sea Wolf. Then we cruise to Fingers Bay for a beautiful paddle where the elusive glacier bear resides as well as many major mammals of Glacier Bay. We need to ride the ebb tide out to Icy Straits where we anchor in the Inian Islands and again enjoy dinner aboard the Sea Wolf. Accommodation: Sea Wolf (B,L,D) September 2-6: Northern Inside Passage Following our usual 8:00 AM breakfast, we head toward Point Adolphus looking for the humpback whales of Icy Straits. Paddling and hiking will be part of each day as we explore the beautiful bays and fjords that make up the amazing topography and richness of the Tongass National Forest. We will explore new eco-regions rich with flora and fauna and hope to see bubble-netting humpback whales, orcas, Dall's porpoises, harbor porpoises and seals as well as the massive Steller sea lions. smaller creatures that inhabit this bountiful landscape.
