SUPPORT FROM THE FRENCH BUT THEY WANT MORE INFORMATION IPSOS 2018 poll on the development policy in France: • 70% of the French are in favor of supporting developing countries. They consider it as a useful duty. • 70% of the French think that the situation in developing countries can have an impact on their lives in France. • One French person in four feels they are well informed about the French development policy (% has increased). CHAIR OF IDFC (www.idfc.org) A powerful club: the world’s leading development funder. Rémy Rioux has been Over USD 800bn of annual chairing IDFC since financing. MORE PARTNERSHIPS The closer ties with CDC continue to be strengthened: the joint investment fund STOA is making its first investments in 2018. IN LEBANON, TRAINING FOR A TRADE… AND FOR LIVING TOGETHER Since the outbreak of the war in Syria, Lebanon and its four million inhabitants have hosted some one and a half million Syrian refugees. AFD is supporting a project for a vocational training and access to employment program, which contributes to rapidly improving living conditions for Lebanese and refugee populations. 2018 A WORLD IN COMMON 28
IN CÔTE D’IVOIRE, GIRLS ARE PUSHING OPEN THE DOORS OF SCHOOL In Côte d’Ivoire, only 2% of girls from poor families in rural areas can hope to complete secondary education, against 49% of rich urban boys. To address this situation, AFD is supporting the Government of Côte d’Ivoire’s ambitious program to build high schools in rural areas. The objective is to bring the most excluded populations closer to education services and reduce inequalities between urban and rural dwellers. 2018 A WORLD IN COMMON 29
INDIA: KOCHI IS TURNING INTO A SMART CITY AFD is assisting the economic capital of Kerala with the development of a mass transport system to address the demographic and economic challenges. It involves financing a new metro, but also its integration into the urban landscape and its connection to other modes of transport. A symbolic project of French expertise in sustainable urban mobility. It is also an example of action for equal rights between women and men. 2018 A WORLD IN COMMON 30
MORE JOBS AND OPPORTUNITIES IN NIGER In the Diffa region, in Niger, AFD is supporting a project to address the feeling of exclusion among young people and improve their future prospects. By 2021, over 10,000 young people will benefit from job opportunities, training and social and cultural activities. The project is being implemented by the Government of Niger, with support from international and national NGOs. It also aims to strengthen social cohesion and restore a strong role for regional authorities in managing their territories. 2018 A WORLD IN COMMON 31
MAYOTTE: THE VIRTUES OF MICROCREDIT The unemployment rate in Mayotte is extremely high. Despite the fact that Mayotte’s waters contain a wealth of fish, fishermen find it hard to start a sustainable activity due to the lack of financial resources. To address this situation, the Association for the Right to Economic Initiative (ADIE), an entity that allocates microcredits to project initiators and entrepreneurs, offers solutions to fishermen’s families in the west of the island to buy and equip boats. 2018 A WORLD IN COMMON 32
QUITO IS SECURING ACCESS TO WATER UNTIL 2040 To help the city of Quito meet water demand due to its strong population growth, AFD is supporting a project for altitude catchment. A technical feat that will allow demand to be met until 2040. This project, a priority for the municipality, will benefit populations located in the north of the city which concentrates the bulk of urban growth. 2018 A WORLD IN COMMON 33
