Adar II — Nisan 5779 April 2019 shir-tikvah-homewood.org email: office@shir-tikvah-homewood.org 1424 183rd Street, Homewood, IL 60430 708-799-4110 Rabbi’s Message Among all the new traditions that have begun to develop since our consolidation into one, united community last summer, I think my absolute favorite, so far, has been the joint kiddush after Shabbat morning services. Each week, circa 12:15pm, our Reform and Conservative minyanim come together in the social hall to share in wine, challah, and a few sweet treats. Each week, we set up two tables: one with a gray tablecloth for strictly kosher items, and another, with a blue tablecloth, where we can share home-baked goods. And each week, we take turns 'hosting' the kiddush. One week, our Reform minyan provides the food, and the next, it's our Conservative minyan's turn to do so. It has been an absolute delight to sing and break bread together. And the special feeling that has built up, a real sense of warmth and cohesiveness, has been a terrific addition to what we were already doing. But perhaps the greatest treat of all, came in the form of the connections that people have begun to make with one another. Until we began these community kiddushes, people might have seen one another around the building, but had never really met. Coming together for kiddush following services, has created an unmistakably warm atmosphere, and has encouraged people who had yet to interact, to talk with one another. What a joy it is to watch everyone together. It was a simple act, really, bringing all of us together around two tables in the social hall, and yet this simple act's impact, has been truly tremendous in helping our congregation to strengthen its bonds, and to become one. Isn't it amazing what a little food can do to bring people together? We know this to be true from Pesach, where Seders gather us round the table (on April 20th this year). Many have told me that this is their favorite holiday, precisely because of that gathering. If you are one of those people- and even if you aren't, boy have I got good news for you! You no longer have to wait a whole year to gather round the table(s)! You now have a weekly opportunity to schmooze with your friends, and to make some new ones! So I encourage you to join us on Shabbat morning, and to enjoy a little sweetness for a sweet Shabbat at the kiddush. I'm quite certain you'll be glad you did! And if you'd like to help us strengthen our community in another way, we invite you to consider dedicating a book- Machzor Lev Shalem (for the High Holidays), New Plaut Torah Commentaries, or Women's Torah Commentaries - in memory or in honor of your loved one and friends- old ones and new ones alike! Here's to many more opportunities for friendships to blossom! 1

The 2019 Shalach Manot project is finished, and we made $2680 profit! And we had a good time doing it! This was a big project and lots of people helped. First and foremost, thank you to Irwin Friedman who used his computer skills to devise a new system for organizing our Shalach Manot project and then did all of the computer input. Yay Irwin!! Thank you to Diedre Bodine for keeping our accounting straight. And thank you to our many bakers, packers, deliverers, and on-call deliverers: Susan Bayer, Gayla Cahan, Shari Cohen, Sherry Dieckman, Ellen Dreyfus, Jake Eisenwasser, Laura Eisenwasser, Carole Fefferman, Judy Fleischer, Ruth Friedman, Harlene Friedman, Risa Graff, Elliott Greenberg, Debbie Greenberg, Dan Greenberg, Ellen Kahn, Manny Katz, Eila Koltun, Rich Lieb, Judy Lieb, Donelle Macey, Ida Raff, Ben Ritter, Sandy Rusnak, Ron Rutzky, Barb Schwarz, Gary Schwarz, Gayle Weil, and Scott Wolf. You did a mitzvah, spread Purim cheer, and helped raise a lot of money! Beit AmiChai Hebrew School It's so hard to believe we are entering the last month of school! The year has gone by so quickly! With that being said, we still have plenty of good stuff going on. April 7th is Good Deeds Day and our classes will be participating during school time. This year the students will make dog and cat toys for the pets at the Humane Society. On April 14th we will have mock Seders during Sunday School. This is always a fun learning experience for our students. Thank you to the best group of room parents for helping to make the morning run smoothly! Quynh, Lia, Robin, Sarah, Elizabeth, Gaby, Tracey, Aliza and Becky thank you for supporting and helping me this year, I couldn't have done it without you! We will be off for Passover break on April 21st and 24th. Last day of Sunday School is April 28th and last day of Hebrew School is May 1st. Chag Sameach! ~ 3
Women of Shir Tikvah The Women of Shir Tikvah’s first (and we hope annual) Taste of Passover was held Wednesday evening March 27th and was a great success. The foods sampled were varied and delicious. Savory, sweet and spicy appetizers, salads, main dishes, vegetables and desserts were offered for all to taste and go back for more. Although Bea Kamen and I did not have a formal committee, we give our thanks to all who came early and stayed late to set up and clear up. You were and are terrific, all of you too numerous to mention. Diedre, our office administrator, created a beautiful cookbook of our shared recipes. Penny Shnay’s Mock Chopped Liver did not make the book and is included here for your Seder enjoyment. Bea and I wish you all a merry and joyful Chag Pesach.
