A welcome message from the Mayor On behalf of the Township and our residents, I am pleased to welcome you to Muskoka Lakes. Within our almost 800 square kilometers of spectacular scenery, comprised of island studded lakes, Canadian Shield outcroppings and mixed forests, you will find something for everyone. Many of our 35,000 seasonal residents return to Muskoka Lakes each summer from Toronto, the USA and the four corners of the Earth to renew relationships with family and friends, “recharge their biological batteries” and reabsorb the Muskoka Experience. Like a fine wine, to appreciate Muskoka Lakes you need to spend time to savour the subtle complexities, with all your senses. Winter to me is our frozen lakes, crisp white snow and millions of stars on a frigid winter evening. Try ice fishing, snowmobiling, cross country skiing, snowshoeing or just relaxing by a wood fire. You will find restaurants and accommodations ranging from basic good quality to five star resorts. Port Carling’s Winterfest, in early February is always good fun for people of all ages. Summer is the time to enjoy many of our 80 pristine soft water lakes. Swimming, fishing, water skiing and perhaps a ride in a classic wooden boat, to view Muskoka’s trademark 2 story multi-slip boathouses, should be on everyone’s bucket list. Summer is also the time to enjoy Muskoka’s cuisine, our shops, artist studios and play a round of golf at one of our renowned golf courses or just soak up the sun on a dock or at the beach. Fall is my favorite season. The cavalcade of colours says it all. By the end of September and into early October each year our mixed hardwoods, especially the maples, turn brilliant shades of yellow, orange and red. The hillsides burst into a beautiful palette of colours. I would encourage you to spend some time kicking the leaves in our numerous parks and on our trails. Entry is free and many of the views are spectacular. The Cranberry Festival in Bala (the Cranberry Capital of Ontario), is the weekend after Thanksgiving. It becomes more popular every year – you won’t want to miss it. Enjoy your stay in the Township of Muskoka Lakes and please come back soon. Don Furniss, Mayor Township of Muskoka Lakes 5

Things to do Everyone knows that Muskoka Lakes is Ontario’s summer playground but that’s really just the tip of the iceberg. Twelve months a year you can find activities and events throughout the region. Johnston’s Cranberry marsh near Bala offers a truly unique way to enjoy the peaceful winter season with a 1.2 km skating loop through 12 acres of frozen cranberry marsh. Warm up afterwards at the Muskoka Lakes Winery on the same property. The cranberry marsh offers over 10 km of snowshoe trails, and more trails can be found at the nearby Torrance Barrens Conservation area, Hardy Lake Provincial Park and you don’t want to miss the vista from Huckleberry Rock. The Bala Cranberry Festival attracts thousands of visitors in October, always the weekend after Thanksgiving. During the first week of February, Port Carling is a hub of activity as the annual Winterfest celebrations — from axe throwing to fireworks displays — take over the community. Spring means it’s time to get back on the water and there’s no better way than aboard one of the area’s historic watercraft. Sunset Cruises out of Port Carling, the Muskoka Steamships out of the Gravenhurst Wharf and the Lady Muskoka sailing out of Bracebridge all offer scenic cruises. 7
As the weather warms, farmers’ markets kick into high gear offering the best in unique food and artwork. Bala’s market runs every Monday in Jaspen Park, while Port Carling hosts its farmers’ market in Hanna Park on Thursdays. Rosseau offers a market on Fridays. Muskoka Lakes is also home to some of the most highly ranked golf courses in the country. Nine holes or 18, private or public, there are abundant ways to hit the links. A summer favorite is the Summer Water Sports show team, which performs their acrobatic tricks during free shows throughout Muskoka every week. Bala’s Museum with Memories of Lucy Maud Montgomery is a must for Anne of Green Gable fans, while the Muskoka Lakes Museum in Port Carling brings local history to life. And did you know that this year is Bala’s 150th anniversary? The only official town in Muskoka Lakes is packed full of history. The Kee to Bala, for example, has brought big musical acts to Muskoka since the days of Louis Armstrong, and the tradition continues to this day. Visit some of our many artists’ galleries, and bring home a piece of Muskoka artwork, or hit one of the craft fairs or antique shows. Experience the colourful explosion of fall by heading out on one of our many hiking trails or stroll through our villages and experience the world’s largest historic photo mosaic in Port Carling — affectionately known as “The Wall”. 8

On the Water As our region became a hotspot for summer visitors, boat building became a thriving industry in the region and Muskoka became known as the wooden boat building capital of North America. Many boat builders still ply their trade in Muskoka Lakes, and you can fulfill your dream of owning an enchanting classic watercraft by contacting Ed Skinner Boat Brokerage, Duke Boats or Stan Hunter. Check out www. muskokalakeschamber.ca for contact details for these and other boat sales, rental and service businesses. Gardening The secret behind those show-stopping planters We’ve all seen them, those gorgeous, full, colourful planters and containers on docks and decks around the lakes. And you keep asking yourself, what’s their secret, well here it is… It’s more than just dirt, there’s no such thing as maintenance- free, not all plants are created equal, and you really can have too much of a good thing when it comes to water. Let’s start from the ground up. First off, the container you are using must have drainage holes. So before you put the soil in, ensure there is adequate drainage in the bottom of the container. Ideally you will use new soil in your planter each year. But realistically some containers are quite large and to re-fill your planter each year with new soil could cost a fortune. So if you don’t empty all of the soil out, make sure that you are adding at least 4 to 6” of new soil. And not top soil or triple mix. Use a container mix, it really doesn’t matter the brand, but some of the name brand soils do offer a soil mix that has fertilizer already in it and some water-holding properties, which is good if you aren’t there all the time to water. This isn’t plant it and forget it. To get the most of your containers, you need to fertilize on a regular basis, dead- head spent blooms and sometimes you will need to trim 29
the plants back a bit so they don’t get that long, leggy look with no blooms. We all know that plants need water to survive, but overwatering is just as bad as under-watering. If plants are sitting in soil that is saturated with water, you start to get some problems. Roots will start to rot and a moist environment is just inviting pests and fungus. This is why proper drainage is so important. Just remember, you can always add more water, but you can’t take it away. Probably the best piece of advice though is to shop at your local, independent garden centre. A reputable garden centre will already be taking proper care of the plants, giving them a great head start before you bring them home. They can also answer all of your questions and set you up with the proper soil, fertilizer and plants to make you successful. Arts &Culture Art lovers can find their heart’s desire in Muskoka Lakes. The area’s rich cultural history has helped produce a thriving arts community that hums through all four seasons. In the early 1900s, Muskoka was known as Canada’s literary summer capital, largely due to conferences held in 1916 and 1917 at Windermere House and Elgin House to provide study, sport and spiritual uplift. Today, Chamber members such as Muskoka Chautauqua champion the arts in Muskoka with multi-disciplinary arts-based programs like live concerts, plays and literary workshops against the backdrop of Muskoka’s natural beauty. It’s a little-known fact that Muskoka Lakes is actually the birthplace of summer theatre. In 1934, what would come to be known as the Actors’ Colony Theatre was launched in Bala, building a considerable reputation and frequently drawing crowds in excess of 1,000 to its summer productions. Bala was also the home of Dunn’s Pavilion starting in the summer of 1942. The venue saw such notable acts as Cab Calloway, the Dorsey Brothers and Duke Ellington in its early years. Renamed The Kee to Bala in the 1960s, it continues to draw some of the biggest names in music from Drake and Snoop Dog, to David Wilcox and Blue Rodeo. 37
Artist studios can be found down almost every side road in Muskoka but perhaps the best way to experience them is during the Muskoka Autumn Studio Tour. Check out www.muskokalakeschamber.ca/ events/ for info on this and other events. Local history is on full display at the Muskoka Lakes Museum in Port Carling, and Bala’s Museum — with memories of Lucy Maud Montgomery — is the Anne of Green Gables enthusiast’s dream come true. Health &Wellness When it comes to healthcare, Muskoka Lakes offers a range of services. There is a healthcare hub staffed by a nurse practitioner in Port Carling and a second one in Wahta. A nurse practitioner (NP) is a registered nurse with advanced university education who provides a full range of health care services to individuals and families. Why spend your holidays in the waiting room of an ER or a clinic when you can visit an NP right in Muskoka Lakes. You will need to book ahead — as it’s not emergency care — but there is typically good availability. You can find an osteopath in Bala at the Bond Osteopathic Clinic; a pharmacy at the Apothecary Shop in Port Carling; and have all of your dental needs met at Port Carling Dental. If you’re looking for an optometrist, Drs. Bishop, Marshall and Associates are chamber members. An accomplished chiropractor out of California, Dr. Brigitte Faas, is setting up a practice here as well. You can also request a registered massage therapist at most of our area spas. Many of those spas can be found inside resorts, such as the Lakehouse Spa at Rawley Resort in Port Severn, Beginnings Spa at Sherwood Inn, Amba Spa at Windermere House and Touchstone Resort, The Workshop Spa and Esthetics in Bala, and Revive Salon and Spa, also in Bala. Many of our spas are open the entire year. Check www.muskokalakeschamber.ca for more information about each of the health and wellness offerings here. 39

Community The Muskoka Lakes Chamber of Commerce has a mandate to promote the economic, civil and social welfare of the Muskoka Lakes region. To help achieve those goals we partner with organizations like the Township of Muskoka Lakes, Muskoka Tourism, Explorer’s Edge, Muskoka Futures, the Muskoka Small Business Centre and the region’s other chambers of commerce, to name just a few. The Chamber is honoured to count many other non-profit organizations as members. That includes the CNIB, Camp Oochigeas, Habitat for Humanity, Muskoka Lakes Preschool and YWCA Muskoka. We also have several associations and service organizations as members, such as the Bala and Port Carling Legions, The Port Carling Lions Club and the Bracebridge-Muskoka Lakes Rotary Club. The Muskoka Lakes Chamber runs community events, such as the annual Bala Santa Claus Parade, and we help promote others like Port Carling Winterfest and the Port Carling Santa Claus Parade (sponsored by the Port Carling Lions Club). Our Chamber started the Bala and Port Carling Farmers’ Markets which now are operated by the vendors themselves. Find out more about our non-profit connections under Community at muskokalakeschamber.ca 41
