At the heart of our school are the children Many of our school families have made the active choice to live in Hawke’s Bay, a stunning part of New Zealand. Havelock North is a special place, nestled at the foot of iconic Te Mata Peak. We are lucky and proud to be the school that’s right here in the midst of Havelock North, a great little village. Our school is a community of learners who respect and value each other and our place in Havelock North, our environment and the wider world. At Havelock North Primary School every decision is based on: “How does this affect the learning of our students?” OUR MISSION & VISION OUR VALUES Empowering Learners Our core values are for Life represented by the 4 Rs As a school with history, we respect We value Responsibility, Respect, tradition. We’ve come a long way from Resilience and Relationships. the early days where the motto was By the time the children leave HNPS “He carries his cross bravely”. We love our aim is to have enabled them to the fact that our school has a solid move confidently into the wider world foundation – almost a century and a with a range of life skills and a lifelong half of passion and care for education. love of learning. ‘Empowering Learners for Life’ is succinct and at the cusp of everything we want to achieve for all our learners. We want to empower the students to explore, make mistakes and learn from these, plus develop social skills – alongside the more obvious teaching in reading, writing and maths. 1
Beginning school We want to make the beginning of school a positive and successful experience for both children and parents. We like the children to come to school with a positive attitude and want them to know school is a safe place to be where they are happy, learn new things and make new friends. We foster a partnership between the school and the parents for the benefit of the child. Beginning school should be exciting, for both children and parents. Most children settle very quickly into school, while others may take a little longer and need more support. We all want the transition to school to be a successful experience for both the child and the family. Should there be any issues we encourage you, as parents, to talk with your child’s teacher in the first instance. All parents want to be part of the child’s start to school and we do encourage this. There may be times, however, when the class teacher may quietly suggest that the child be allowed to settle into the class routines on their own. Once again, any concerns or queries please see your child’s teacher. A positive relationship between home and school is really important.
