Reopening our building in July can be summed up in two words: Pure. Joy. To show the
community how much we missed and appreciated them, we added some fun outdoor photo ops
to help make a visit to the Guthrie feel even more special. A big thanks to you (and your furry

 Sept 30 – Oct 24, 2021
 Dear Friends,
McGuire Proscenium Stage
It is a joy to welcome you to the Guthrie’s 2021–2022 Season! After 18
months of dark stages, returning to the theater feels like the greatest of
gifts. Whether you’re returning to the Guthrie or joining us for the first
time, I’m thrilled and grateful that you’re here.
 Nov 6 – Dec 27, 2021
Wurtele Thrust Stage Our return season promises to be extraordinary in many ways, beginning
with the Guthrie kicking off the national tour of What the Constitution
Means to Me, the illustrious and timely memoir play by Heidi Schreck
that hasn’t stopped wowing critics and theatergoers since its 2017 world
premiere. I love this play entirely, and every person I know who has seen
the show has been so taken by it. I think it is precisely the kind of play
 Jan 8 – Feb 12, 2022
McGuire Proscenium Stage we need as we make our way back to the theater.

Schreck’s close examination of America’s founding document — in
particular the Ninth and Fourteenth Amendments — is everything you’d
expect a play about the U.S. Constitution to be: powerful, serious,
Feb 26 – April 16, 2022 thought-provoking and moving. But it’s also exceedingly personal and

very funny, and that’s what makes it brilliant. Although there are lessons
to be learned and truths to be uncovered, the play is not a political
screed. Rather, it is an invitation to engage in an essential conversation
and determine, like Schreck, what the Constitution means to you.

 April 30 – June 5, 2022
Thank you for joining us as we embark on a new season together, and

I hope you enjoy this remarkable show.

 With gratitude,

GUTHRIE SPOTLIGHT

While You Were Out
On March 13, 2020, everything changed at the Guthrie. Our stages and building stood
silent. “Zoom” entered our vocabulary. Homes suddenly became workspaces. But our
commitment to serve the community through theater never wavered. The last 18 months

may not have gone according to plan, but they gave us a unique opportunity to do things
differently, like create virtual theater and rebuild one of our most beloved shows. Here’s
what we were up to while our stages were dark.

PARTNERSHIP WITH MN BLACK THEATRE CIRCLE
Since August 2020, MN Black Theatre Circle — a multigenerational
coalition of Black theater artists in the Twin Cities — has worked in
partnership with the Guthrie to center the voices of Minnesota Black
theater artists while also aiming to generate greater equity and inclusion
 within the Guthrie.

In May 2021, this work culminated in the virtual Blackness Is… Arts
Festival, which was intentionally scheduled one year after George Floyd’s
death. Produced by MN Black Theatre Circle in partnership with the
Guthrie, the three-day showcase featured performances by 13 local Black
artists and shared a detailed history of Black theater in Minnesota.

 VIRTUAL PROGRAMMING
Participating in the virtual theater landscape was new to the Guthrie,
and it allowed us to feature more voices and offer greater access to
audiences in Minnesota and beyond. Our biggest undertaking was
Dickens’ Holiday Classic, a virtual telling of A Christmas Carol. We
partnered with Freestyle Films to create a new version of the holiday
classic that blended elements of cinema and theater. In December
2020, patrons from all 87 Minnesota counties, all 50 states and 15 other
countries tuned in, plus an estimated 150,000 K–12 students who viewed
 the film at no cost.

From October 2020 to April 2021, we also presented a monthly series of
virtual performances by local Black artists, including I AM, A Breath for
George, STOOPIDITY, When Our Joy Matters, Missing Mississippi Moons,
The Uprising Volume II: Black HERstory, Dining With the Ancestors and
 Tears of a Willow.

“Much of our initial work was figuring out how Charles Dickens’ prose
would live in a cinematic world and maintain the genesis of theater.
In the end, it became something uniquely its own.”
 – E.G. Bailey on co-directing Dickens’ Holiday Classic

PLAY DEVELOPMENT
While the Guthrie was shuttered, we kept our play commissions moving
 forward with these talented artists:
 • Larissa FastHorse (Sicangu Lakota) and Ty Defoe (Haudenosaunee,
Six Nations/Anishinaabe Nation) of Indigenous Direction
 • Mark Rylance (Nice Fish) and Peter Reder
 • Karen Zacarías (Destiny of Desire, Native Gardens)
 • Amir Nizar Zuabi (This Is Who I Am, Grey Rock)

We asked playwrights Larissa FastHorse and Ty Defoe (pictured above on a writing
retreat with Indigenous Direction) to tell us about their play in progress tentatively
titled Franklin Avenue. They described it this way: “A new play emerges about the urban
Native heart of Minneapolis. Created through engagement with local Indigenous friends,
family and fellow artists.” Stay tuned for more about this exciting upcoming work.

 REBUILDING A CHRISTMAS CAROL
When Charles Dickens’ timeless tale returns to the Guthrie stage in
November 2021, it will mark our 47th production of the holiday classic. For
the past few months, our in-house shops have been bustling with activity
as artists began building all-new scenery, costumes, props, lighting and
sound for the show. We can’t wait for audiences to experience the wonder
of the holidays through this fresh-yet-faithful adaptation by Chicago-
based theatermaker Lavina Jadhwani. P.S. Tickets are on sale now.

 WORKING WITH ACTORS
In addition to having artists back onsite, it was a joy to have actors
return to the Guthrie for various projects. In March 2021, we transformed
one of our rehearsal rooms into the set for a virtual presentation of
Dining With the Ancestors, a play conceived by Regina Marie Williams
that brought four actors, Williams included, together to perform a call-
to-action story about a woman who receives an unexpected visit from
 three Black ancestors.

More familiar faces graced our rehearsal rooms in August 2021 for a
workshop of Shakespeare’s history plays. Turn the page to see who
joined us and learn more about the purpose, goals and discoveries of
 the working sessions.

 SPRUCED SPACES
With support from our production and facilities staff, we took advantage
of our empty spaces to tackle much-needed updates, including
reupholstering all 1,100 seats in the thrust, replacing armrests in the
proscenium and adding 60+ handrails in both theaters. We also made
health and safety improvements, including increased air flow and the
installation of high-efficiency MERV 13 air filters. And that sea of red
theater seats? They were deep cleaned and spruced up just for you.
