Huckleberry Highlights June 2018 Message from the Principal Dear Parents and Families, Welcome to June! The end of the school year is rapidly approaching. Please be sure to take a look a the Highlights calendar, read my Monday emails, check the backpack or speak with your child’s teacher if you need any clarification regarding end of the year activities. It’s going to be a fun and busy last couple of weeks. Last month, I had my end of the year evaluation meetings with all our teachers. I wish you could have listened in on our conversations about instruction and student growth, both academically and socially. The dedication, preparation and enthusiasm with which our teachers approach their profession is second to none. It was so impressive to see examples of student work, K-4, that involved critical thinking, cooperative learning, technology and independent application of concepts learned. Student engagement is at the top of our priority list and our teachers are always researching, developing and sharing strategies that will intrinsically motivate each individual child. I believe our teachers are very successful in providing our students with instructional practice that inspires our students This the result of positive relationships. Through conversations, our educators get to know your student’s interests, strengths, areas for improvement and plan well structured lessons or units of learning that are differentiated to challenge the abilities of each child. The teachers take risks in their teaching and try new techniques and approaches they have learned from professional development opportunities or observed while visiting colleagues’ classrooms during Instructional Rounds. The goal is always to create a positive and safe learning environment, a classroom where students feel comfortable participating and to also take risks. The teachers model for our students high expectations for personal progress and a love of learning. I am a very fortunate principal to have such a talented and dedicated team of
professionals providing a meaningful and rich learning experience for the students of HHS everyday! It is all of this that led us to create a goal for our 2018-2019 School Improvement Plan. Our goal will be to increase student initiative, agency and engagement by emphasizing differentiated instruction and personalized learning. This is a shared goal with the Summer Street Elementary School and the teachers will collaborate to share and plan activities to support personalized learning. “Personalized learning is an approach that uses such factors as the learner’s own passions, strengths, needs, family, culture, and community as fuel for the development of knowledge, skills, and dispositions. Instruction is based on student needs, tailored to learning preferences and specific interests of the learners.” B. Bray and K. McClaskey How to Personalize Learning. As I met with each teacher this spring they were very excited about taking on this goal and many of them will be making this school improvement goal a professional goal for next year. I am really looking forward to implementing this initiative next year and working with the teachers to further improve and enhance the engagement and investment of every student. In closing, I would like to thank all of you, our parents and families, for the support you provided your child and your child’s teacher this year. I also want to thank our students for coming to school everyday, ready to learn and for giving their best effort in all that they did. It was a great year on the Hill and I hope you have a fantastic summer and I’ll see you back at HHS in the fall! Take care, Brian Message from the Superintendent Dear Parents and Guardians: It certainly was not feeling like the year was flying by during the cold, dark days of March! However, as I sit here and write this to you, I find it difficult to believe that this is my last correspondence of the school year.
No matter how many “Junes” educators experience, they still seem magical. It is a privilege to have witnessed the milestones and achievements of our students throughout the year from our youngest learners to our most recent graduates. June is the time of the year that educators and parents see the fruits of their labor come to fruition. I speak for many educators when I say, the rewards we enjoy in June energize us for the next school year with the opportunity to start all over with new students, challenges, and celebrations! We will celebrate the 157 graduates of the class of 2018 tonight at Lynnfield High School. I know I say it all the time, but with each year, it becomes abundantly clear- do not blink- it all goes by so fast. Educators have an awesome responsibility of working with students every day, year after year. It is always humbling to watch our students progress through the system, once needing assistance to tie a tricky pair of laces to engaging in thoughtful and meaningful conversations about life after high school, while sharing their hopes and dreams for the future. I walk the halls of the elementary schools and see a curiosity in our youngest learners loving life, and making new friends with the support and guidance of educators who would never choose to teach at any other level. In the middle school, there is a vulnerability to our students that is sweet and complex all at the same time. These same students struggle to find their place in their ever evolving social circles, while yearning for the charismatic adults to quietly acknowledge their budding self confidence that lies deep within. Our high school students walk the halls with a bit more confidence, carrying themselves with such pride for their school and the community. It is exciting to watch how mature they have become over the years showing true acceptance and empathy for their classmates. As they work to establish true adult relationships, they engage in friendly banter back and forth with their teachers and administrators, while solidifying bonds that quite often last a lifetime. So, June is time to pause, take stock in what we have been able to accomplish over the past 10 months. Yes, there are always things we can do better; however, now is the
time to celebrate the outstanding accomplishments of our professional learning community. Lynnfield Public Schools is a special place filled with caring and dedicated educators who have been handpicked over the years to work with our most precious gifts, our children. This is a responsibility that is never taken for granted. I hope you make memories this summer that will last a lifetime. Enjoy each moment, after all, August is right around the corner. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to work with you and your children.
