But the most noticeable change do not need a permit. is the replacement of grass in the basin with several types of native plants. These plants are chosen for many reasons, such as their hardiness in diverse conditions, prevention of erosion, promotion of biodiversity, and decrease of certain pollutants. Native plantings in stormwater basins require different maintenance tech- niques than other plantings in the Township. Unfamiliarity of these techniques allowed for the proliferation of weeds in the East Treemont basin. However, the Township is consulting with experts to create a plan to address the weeds and maintenance needs moving forward. This is crucial as the Township continues to pursue other basin retrofits to further meet the requirements of the Pollutant Re- duction Plan. ADAMS RICCI BUTTERFLY GARDEN WINTER UPDATE The Penn State Master Gardeners’ winter project is amending soil at the Adams- Ricci Butterfly Garden. Last summer's record heat and below average rain on top of the garden's exposure to wind and hot sun stressed the plants. Adding organic materials loosens the soil, allowing aeration and better moisture retention. The areas covered with pine needles are being improved by loosening the hard clay pan and digging in garden compost, coffee grounds, and composted leaf mulch. We are also adding shredded leaves to the garden’s understory by machine-shredding leaves from nearby oak and sycamore trees and placing them around the garden’s plants. The shredded leaves compost in place over the winter and provide a fluffy, protected space for birds, insects, and other garden creatures. When visiting, see if you can spot evidence of this work while you are enjoying the garden. Currently, there are no scheduled events at the garden, but please check the bulletin board on our shed for timely information. 6 EastPennsboro.net

Thank you for your continued support. What Not To Flush! Township officials are reminding residents that many materials flushed or poured down a drain can harm the pipes that connected to the sewer system and cause sewer backups in your home and sewer releases to the environment. Basically, the only thing you should ever flush down a toilet is human waste and toilet paper. Keep the following out of the toilet: disposable dia- pers, tampons and tampon applicators, sanitary napkins, cotton balls and swabs, mini or maxi pads, condoms, cleaning wipes of any kind, facial tissue, bandages and bandage wrappings, automotive fluids, paint, solvents, seal- ants and thinners and poisons and hazardous waste. Do not flush medications down the toilet. Take the medications to an approved prescription drug take-back site or event.
