_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ CEO REVIEW “2015 saw another challenging but incredible year for The Body Shop Foundation. It’s strange I know to throw those two words in the same sentence but despite all the challenges we faced as an organisation, we achieved some pretty incredible results. We really delivered on our ‘thinking globally, acting locally’ approach by finding some truly remarkable community based groups which deliver a vital local service. It’s these little drops of activity, by individuals determined to bring about positive social and environmental change, that soon add up to a thunder clap of impact; changing habitats, laws and lives globally. The fundraising product, in store in The Body Shop globally, also allowed the work of The Body Shop Foundation to be highlighted and in turn, the groups we support gained more understanding and LISA JACKSON recognition. We are so thankful to those markets who got behind this global activity and to every store staff member who sold one and customer who purchased one - it’s such a brilliant momentum to be part of and literally, it was in everyone’s hands to make that change. Thanks to everyone who continues to show their support and enthusiasm for our work and the issues and groups we support. Thanks to you, we can throw light in the darkest of places. Thanks to you, we can raise and debate issues that we may not have heard about. Thanks to you, we continue to provide a hand up, rather than a hand out to those groups on the ground whose services literally are a matter of life or death. Here’s to 2016; another year full of charitable activity, people power and world changing effects!” THE BODY SHOP FOUNDATION: ANNUAL REVIEW 2015 4
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ “2015 was a challenging year for the Foundation - or, to be accurate, a challenging 10 months as the Foundation CHAIR OF changed its financial year to end in December to align with The Body Shop International. As I mentioned in my TRUSTEES report last year, we had just begun to explore with the Company developing a funding agreement which would both enable the Foundation to build a long term strategy and align with the Company’s new vision of ‘Enrich not REVIEW Exploit’. These discussions are ongoing, and we are optimistic that a new arrangement will be in place by mid 2016. Our income in 2015 was considerably lower than in previous years, but despite this, our Trustee Board and Executive Team have continued to show utter commitment, creativity and dedication to the cause and much has been achieved. ANDREW RADFORD In brief - 83 grants were awarded to a total value of £247,000. Wonderful and worthwhile projects were supported in 29 countries, reflecting the global reach of both the Foundation and the Company. Our grantees have been working to save polar bears, to protect and replant forests, to fight the trade in wildlife, to combat child prostitution, to improve women’s rights, to help the endangered honey bee, to support children with special needs and many, many more desperately important causes. Working with the Foundation brings into sharp focus just what havoc we humans are wreaking on the planet and, as a consequence, how much there is to be done. It is also, however, a privilege to be able to play a small part in putting right some of the damage. I would like to pay tribute to our Trustees for giving their time, knowledge and experience so selflessly to support the Foundation’s work. To our team - Lisa, our Chief Executive and Adelle, Alison, Sue, Philippa, Oli and Jo - I say thank you all and well done for another fine year in the history of the Foundation. You achieved great things under testing conditions, raising almost £300,000 from stock sales and almost £80,000 from challenges, as well as identifying some terrific organisations for us to support. We also owe a great deal to our brilliant ban of volunteers without whom our stock sales events would be impossible to manage. And, of course, our thanks to the Company for the funds we received in 2015. We look forward to 2016 with great hopes for the success of the EINE hand cream, which is the product offered by the Company this year from which the Foundation will be receiving funds. The hand cream is an integral part of the new and exciting Body Shop commitment of ‘Enrich not Exploit - it's in our hands’. In adding to the funds to be donated by the Company, our own fundraising will continue with renewed energy so that overall, we can expect total income to be higher in 2016 to enable the Foundation to continue its important work”. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ WHAT IS THE BODY The Body Shop Foundation (charity registration number 802757) exists to fund charitable SHOP FOUNDATION? organisations that are changing the world for the better. We were originally founded by Dame Anita and Gordon Roddick to give the company’s charitable giving both strategy and direction, maintaining the necessary monitoring and evaluation it requires when giving donations. Now, 26 years on and over £22 million awarded to groups across the world, we see ourselves as champions of brave ideas for positive change, supporting animals, people and our wondrous planet. Our damage to the planet is affecting us all - human, environment and animal. Our diverse focus ensures that no issue remains uncovered or unheard. By identifying the most effective community groups, working on the ground breaking issues and by targeting our funding right at the heart of the issue, we can deliver local change on a global level. For us, everything is connected. It’s not just a question of looking at one issue when it has a ripple effect in other areas. It’s about looking at our planet as a whole and acting accordingly. Our grant making strategy and donations aim to deliver real and lasting change across the world, working to support and raise awareness for community based charities and organisations that strive to protect the planet, its people and the animals who share it with us. Overall, The Body Shop Foundation has three main objectives. OUR STRATEGY The first is to continue to be an effective grant maker and create real and lasting change for community groups working on vital issues across the world. The second is to continue to develop fundraising opportunities to raise money, which also engage and encourage participation with a diverse selection of stakeholders across the world. The third is to raise awareness of these issues, promoting understanding of the changes needed to help bring about positive social and environmental change. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ THE IMPACT THE QUAGGA, BAIJI, MALABAR CIVET AND DODO. OF OUR DO WE REALLY WANT TO ADD TIGERS, LIONS AND QUOLLS TO THIS LIST OF EXTINCT ANIMALS? FUNDING IT’S ENTIRELY DOWN TO US TO PROTECT, PRESERVE AND STARE IN WONDROUS DELIGHT AT ALL THE DIVERSE AND BEAUTIFUL SPECIES MOTHER NATURE HAS CREATED. Lucky, FAME is a group that does EXACTLY that. They work tirelessly to save Australia’s endangered species from extinction. Like the quoll, for example. Thanks to the funding they received from The Body Shop Foundation, FAME were able to rescue and transfer 42 Western quoll from Western Australia and release them into Flinders Ranges National Park. Each quoll was radio collared, tracked and monitored through the winter breeding season, with numbers showing successful breeding and survival rates that season. ANIMAL In their own words: “The entire project has achieved an unexpected level of success. We’ve learned a lot and proven that, PROTECTION: under the right circumstance and with the right support - thanks to The Body Shop Foundation - locally extinct wildlife can FOUNDATION FOR be restored to its original territory. AUSTRALIA’S MOST ENDANGERED Being part of the return of an endangered species to its original home is one of the most moving things you can possibly do. The support of The Body Shop Foundation, coming in early in the project, gave us the encouragement to go on in the SPECIES LTD face of quite a bit of scepticism. Now the entire country is watching our project and other projects will be based on what we (FAME) have learned. www.fame.org.au There have been many times when we’ve been moved to tears but none more so than when we saw the plane carrying the first batch of quolls flying in from Western Australia in April. We felt right from the start that this was going to be a ground breaking success and we were proven right in December when the project was assessed and permission given to bring in another batch in 2015. Quite simply, it has been an amaz- ing journey and a very satisfying experience. Every time we call into a Body Shop, we make sure we thank the staff and tell them who we are. We let them know that they have been part of an amazing wildlife success story and we will be forever grateful”. Well FAME, we’re grateful too for your endless work to protect and preserve the world’s wondrous biodiversity on behalf of us all - and quolls - everywhere - thank you. You rock! _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ THE IMPACT IT’S OUR DUTY AS CUSTODIANS OF THE GLOBE TO LOOK AFTER THE PLANET THAT SUSTAINS SUCH WILDLY DIVERSE, WONDERFUL CREATURES AND HABITATS. OF OUR OUR GROUPS PUT THIS PRESERVATION FIRST – SAFEGUARDING OUR SKIES, OCEANS AND FORESTS - FUNDING ENSURING A FUTURE FOR EVERYONE. As 70% of the planet’s surface is covered by water, protecting our oceans is incredibly important and intregal to the survival of us all. Figures prove that if we continue to abuse our planet at this rate, we will have more plastic than fish in the sea by 2050 - a truly horrific thought. Which is why we must support groups like Ocean Sole. Ocean Sole is a one of a kind social enterprise, taking discarded flip-flops from waterways and coastlines in Kenya and turning them into masterpieces, using the skills of local artisans. They have risen to the challenge by recycling, reducing, reusing and rejecting waste through innovative solutions that are sustainable AND educate the local/global audience on the fact that the ocean is quickly becoming the world’s dump yard. Our funding was for their Kuruwitu Welfare and Conservation Association (KCWA) which runs a variety of educational, volunteering and training programmes on protecting our oceans. EVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION: Feedback from the locals have been incredibly positive - including the lovely Dickson Juma who said “Many have OCEAN SOLE commented on the waste sorting and collection facility. It helps to remove waste from the beach, sure. Also, it makes FOUNDATION people aware of waste and the issues of recycling. For too long Kenyans have ignored these issues and we are proud to be at the front of something positive for change”. www.ocean-sole.com Katana Ngala also added, “The training centre is a great step forward for KCWA. It is a simple structure but gives us a home for the KCWA to run training, show films and has the added benefit of a recycling centre. We believe this is the start of a bigger project with bigger impacts”. We believe you too Katana and Ocean Sole. We’re behind you all the way on this one. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ JFK HAD IT ABSOLUTELY SPOT ON. “THE RIGHTS OF EVERY MAN ARE DIMINISHED WHEN THE RIGHTS OF ONE THE IMPACT MAN ARE THREATENED.” WE’D ALSO PUT ‘WOMAN OR CHILD’ IN THAT QUOTE AND THEN WE COULDN’T OF OUR AGREE MORE. FUNDING WE’LL ACTIVELY SUPPORT AND STAND SHOULDER TO SHOULDER WITH THOSE WHO RIGHT THESE WRONGS. Take WeStopHate, for example. According to current statistics, at least 52% of teens have been bullied online, with 10-20% of young teens confessing to being bullied on a regular basis. One million children on Facebook alone were harassed, with 35% of children actually being threatened online. Sadly, these figures are on the rise but in order to protect, mentor and guide the next generation, we must fund and find those who collectively turn the negative into positive, through peer guidance and HUMAN RIGHTS: counselling. In short, ’cyber angels’. WESTOPHATE WeStopHate is a programme dedicated to raising self-esteem in teens through various social media peer based platforms, www.westophate.org to help each other gain confidence. They encourage teens to produce and showcase their own confidence building videos and blogs online and through their YouTube channel. So what did our funding achieve and what difference has it made? Well, time to hear from the group in question…. “The funding we received from The Body Shop Foundation has been so helpful in getting us to our next level this past year. Among the things that this has allowed for is the ability to spend time conceiving and beginning to implement our next set of initiatives, most notably the WeStopHate self-esteem guide entitled ‘FLAWD: How to stop hating on yourself, others and things that make you who you are’, released by Penguin Random House on August 18, 2015. We’ve given talks and workshops across the East Coast in the fall 2015 to promote the book and its message. They led a talk at Step Up Women’s Network’s ‘College Connections Conferences’ in Manhatten, NYC and a workshop for 600 low- income high school girls at the prestigious Massachusetts Conference for Women in Boston, MA. The book is getting glowing reviews with Oprah’s Book Club putting it in its ‘6 Self-Help Books that - really! - help. Our association with The Body Shop Foundation has rippled out into a wonderful working relationship, most notably, we have been so lucky to partner with The Body Shop on the creation of WSH’s ‘We Stop Haters of the World’ series, which continues to grow in view count and subscribers for the WSH community across the world. What’s especially great about our association with The Body Shop is that we feel proud to be associated with a corporation whose values we are 100% aligned with. That is an enormous bonus that makes US feel warm and fuzzy!” No, you’re the best WeStopHate. We insist on that. Let’s be BFF. No, you hang up….. THE BODY SHOP FOUNDATION: ANNUAL REVIEW 2015 14

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ OUR RELATIONSHIPS WITH NORTHBROOK 2015 saw us complete a second year collaboration with Northbrook College, based in Worthing, West Sussex. COLLEGE Northbrook is one of the leading centres for theatre education in Southern England, with over 350 full time students. Courses range across the spectrum of theatre discipline including Stage and Production Management, Lighting & Sound and a BA (Hons) Theatre Arts. Our relationship is with the departments who are studying The BA Theatre Arts, which also incorporates Drama, Dance, Technical, Design, Costume and Make Up. In 2014, they helped create an extra-ordinary Halloween evening for our Volunteers; designing and producing a theatrical experience which they will never forget! In our second year Northbrook assisted with the fundraising event - ‘A Night of Ice & Fire’; our fire walking event in Sussex. The idea behind the collaboration is that students get the opportunity to work for a real life ‘client’ - submitting ideas, working to tight budgetary constraints, explaining mood boards, bringing costume ideas to life and working on lighting concepts and stunning backdrops, culminating in feedback from The Body Shop Foundation and an interview process - all great experience for life outside the course. From our initial brief - to design a ‘Game of Thrones inspired backdrop to the fundraising night’ - the students thoroughly exceeded all expectations, from the costumes, make up and theming to penning and performing a play on the night, including an original vocal performance, exquisite dressing to the event venue and a commitment to the theme which lasted all evening. We are immensely proud of our association with the talented students and teaching staff at Northbrook College and look forward to future collaborations. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ OUR RELATIONSHIPS WITH OUR OWN INTREPID Our volunteering programme is an activity of The Body Shop Foundation which gives us great pride indeed. BAND OF VOLUNTEERS We’ve been running this programme for over 16 years now and are still continually bowled over by their support, hard work, dedication and commitment to the fundraising avenues that The Body Shop Foundation runs. Several of our volunteers have been with us literally since Day One. Some have brought friends and family to the mix, others are friends and family of the Foundation team and therefore didn’t get the choice, but collectively they bring a wide variety of skills and endless enthusiasm to get the job done. Between them all, they have donated an incredible 3,980 volunteering hours in 2015. This number continues to climb year on year and we are so very grateful for their continued help - we seriously wouldn’t be able to do it without them. As Ellie Goulding sings, “When I’m with you, I’m standing with an army” - this couldn’t be truer with our lovely band of volunteers. Whatever you’ve done for us in the last year - whether it’s cleaning, sorting or marking stock, helping in our charity shop, making up lucky dip bags, assisting at sales - whatever you’ve done, we thank you. Listen, we’d love to list every single person who has gone out of their way to support and help The Body Shop Foundation but there is not enough paper in this report to do that AND we do OUR THANKS have to think of the trees. But you all do have a very fond place in our hearts, just down the hallway from our love of cute dog pictures and the way we feel at Christmas. On behalf of the Trustees, our team and all the groups that your help and commitment supports - HUGE thanks. Our collective efforts really make a world of positive change. We’d also like to send a deliciously scented, animal friendly, Commitment-tastic ‘THANK YOU’ to our long term donor and corporate sponsor - The Body Shop International. Grateful does not describe how we feel for your on-going support - we love working with you and your teams across the world and hope that this continues long into the future. We’re as pleased as punch to have a product in your glorious stores - thank you so much indeed. To ALL the groups and charities out there, desperately trying to shine a light in darkness, trying to bring about social and environmental change : thank YOU. You are the reason that we fight so hard with our fundraising, our reason for being, the wind beneath our wings, the Bert to our Ernie. We want to be you when we grow up - keep up your brilliant work. And to you reading this, thank you too. Please share this document, how you feel about us, our stories and feedback from the groups because the only thing that will reverse the damage we are doing on this wondrous planet is YOU. Let’s use people power to get behind the incredible groups that are on the front line of the issues and show our gratitude and support. Together we are mighty. Let’s show the world how much we love it. THE BODY SHOP FOUNDATION: ANNUAL REVIEW 2015 31
