Featured Speaker We are honored to welcome two speakers! Marta McDowell teaches landscape history and horticulture at the New York Botanical Garden. Marta is the 2019 Recipient of the Sarah Chapman Francis Medal (GCA) for inspiring generations of readers and gardeners with her magnificent portraits of literary figures and their gardens. Her many books include Beatrix Potter’s Gardening Life (2013) and Emily Dickinson’s Gardening Life (2019). Her upcoming book will be The Secret Garden (2022). The title of Marta’s talk will be: “But I like drawing flowers.” Floral Patterns in Beatrix Potter’s Art and Garden. 2
Featured Speaker Liz Hunter MacFarlane is Collections Manager for the National Trust’s objects in the South Lakes area, which includes the Beatrix Potter Collections at Hill Top – as well as at many of Beatrix’s farms and cottages. She has worked for the Trust in the Lake District for twenty years. Liz grew up in a suburb of Manchester not far from Beatrix Potter’s “northern roots”. Liz will talk about the Beatrix Potter textiles within the National Trust Collection. The collection includes items made and embellished by Beatrix and those she acquired and inherited. 3

Accommodation: We have reserved a block of rooms at a Special Rate at the Kensington Park Hotel in San Francisco. Please call them at (415) 788-6400 and ask for Lindsay Landin. Tell her you are a Member of The Beatrix Potter Society attending the meeting at the San Francisco School of Needlework and Design on Saturday, August 22, 2020. This will get you the Special Rate of $278.30 (includes tax) for a single room, or $289.95 (includes tax) for a double room. You will need to reserve for 2 nights – August 21 and August 22, 2020. Valet Parking is available for an additional $50.00 per night. This hotel is approximately 500 feet from the event location at the school.
