Acids, Bases, and Salts Cloze Hydrochloric acid____ is a strong acid which can be used to clean rust off of steel. Sodium hydroxide, commonly known as lye, is a highly caustic base that is used to make soap. Both of these substances can cause severe burns if they come in contact with human skin. However, when these two very dangerous substances combine, they form ___table salt ____ and ___water____, both of which are completely harmless. This process of combining acids and bases to make salts and water is known as ____neutralization___. In this reaction, the acid and base _____cancel_____ each other out. There are many different kinds of salts. In general, a salt is a compound of positive and negative ___ions____. Often the positive ions are ___metals____ such as sodium and the negative ions are ___non-metals___ such as chlorine. In the absence of water, these ions can form ___crystals______ which have a high ___melting____ point and are brittle. Many salts ___dissolve_____ readily in water.
Acid, Base, and Salts Worksheet-going further Hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide will combine to form sodium chloride (table salt) and water. While sodium chloride and water separately are fairly harmless, if this reaction is actually done in a lab, the sodium chloride and water could react with each other and form the hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide. This is called a reversible reaction or reverse reaction. Certain conditions are needed for this to happen and it cannot happen if you just have a salt solution at home! Keep in mind for a neutralization reaction between an acid and a base, the amount of acid and the amount of base need to be equal to each other for them to cancel out. Some more information on salts. A salt is any metal combined with a family of chemicals called halogens. If you have a periodic table, the elements on the left side of the table are metals. If you look at the second column in from the right, you will see a family that starts with F, Cl, Br, and I. This family is the halogens. So any metal combined with F (Fluorine), Cl (Chlorine), Br (Bromine), or I (Iodine) is a salt. Electromagnetism Cloze Magnetism and electricity are connected in a way that is very useful to people. Magnetic fields can be used to generate electric ___currents___ and electric currents can be used to generate ___magnetic____ fields. This connection between magnets and electricity is called electromagnetism____. How does this work? As __coils____ of wire spins in a magnetic ____field____, a current flows through it.
