Fall 2015 August 31–December 20 (16 weeks) 7 Motivations for Practice When You’re Too Busy to Practice BY NATALIE MILLER There’s an oft-quoted Zen proverb that says, “You should sit in meditation for 20 minutes every day—unless you’re too busy. Then, you should sit for an hour.” Upon reading this, you may feel the truth of it in your gut. You may half-smile and nod: yes, that is sage advice. But perhaps your half-smile morphs into a furrowed brow as you scan your day to find those 60 minutes. ‘I can scarcely make 60 minutes a WEEK,’ you might think. I have meetings to attend. Deadlines to meet. Carpools to drive. Bills to pay. And yet practice improves everything else we do. Regular practice of focused, mindful, breath-enhancing pursuits like meditation, yoga, and Pilates supports wellbeing in body, mind, and soul. Practice makes us more present in our meetings, more calm about our deadlines, more compassionate in our carpooling, and more wise with our money. When we’re overwhelmed and stressed is exactly when we most need and benefit from regular practice. Continued on page 2 Fall 2015 • willowstreetyoga.com 1

The same is true for yogis and Pilates folk. If you’re not convinced you’ll show up for yourself, sign up with a friend and commit to coming together. If you don’t have a friend to bring along, make a new one in class—friendlies always abound at Willow Street —or even just promise your teacher, “See you next week!” (PS: Since practice helps us to be stronger and more centered, you’re never really practicing only for yourself—it’s always for everybody around you, too. Remember that when you’re feeling the pull to stay late at work with your colleagues, or to ditch class for your trouser-tugging toddler). 5 If you find yourself skipping practice, adjust rather than adjourn.
