Introductory Message This Self–Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear learners, can continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions, directions, exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you to understand each lesson. Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-by-step as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you. Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in each SLM. This will tell you if you can proceed on completing this module or if you need to ask your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better understanding of the lesson. At the end of each module, you need to answer the post-test to self-check your learning. Answer keys are provided for each activity and test. We trust that you will be honest in using these. In addition to the material in the main text, notes to the Teacher are also provided to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how they can best help you on your home-based learning. Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any part of this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises and tests. Read the instructions carefully before performing each task. If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering the tasks in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator. Thank you. What I Need to Know This module aims to use graphs to represent organized data: pie chart, bar graph, line graph, histogram, and ogive. (M7SP – Ivd – e – 1) In this module, the learner is expected to: ⚫ differentiate the different graphs used to represent organized data. ⚫ use appropriate graphs to represent a given organized data: pie chart, bar graph, line graph, histogram, and ogive. What I Know Directions: Choose the letter that corresponds to your answer. 1. What type of graph can be used to show the relation of a part to the whole? a. line graph b. bar graph c. pie chart d. ogive 2
2. Which of the following graphs is appropriate to use when we want to show the exact values of the frequencies of the data set? a. line graph b. bar graph c. pie chart d. histogram 3. What type of graph can be used to show the cumulative frequencies of data points that are less than and more than the value in a data set? a. bar graph b. ogive c. line graph d. pie chart 4. What graph is appropriate to be used in the given data? Color No. of balloon a. pie chart Red 18 b. ogive blue 15 c. line graph yellow 12 d. histogram orange 10 Total 55 5. What graph is appropriate to use if you want to know the income of your Sari-Sari store for one week? a. bar graph b. ogive c. line graph d. pie chart What’s In Last week, we learned the different graphs and all these graphs used in displaying data. Pie Chart Bar Graph Displaying Line Graph Data Histogram Ogive QUESTION: How are these graphs differ? 3
What’s New Directions: Look at the data below and answer the question on a separate sheet. The data show the number of copies of newspaper distributed to household. Year 2011 2012 2013 2014 2015 Number of copies 265 270 285 310 290 (in thousand) Question: What do you think is the appropriate graph for this data? Justify your answer. LESSON Graphs to represent organized 2 data What is It The following are the graphs and its usage for the organized data. TYPE OF GRAPH STRUCTURE DATA TO USAGE USE Used to show the Circle: divided by Categorical PIE CHART relation of a part to the sector/slice data whole. Bar: height of the bar depends upon frequency of the data given and the Used to compare BAR GRAPH width must be one the Categorical between given data. same size. The bars have data distinct category so there are gaps between bars. Used to show the rising LINE Line: points are connected Quantitative and falling of trends over GRAPH by a line data a period of time. 4
Bar: The higher the bar is, the greater the frequency Used to show of data values in that class. distributions of variables Quantitative HISTOGRAM The continuous data in the that indicate the number data axis shows that the graph of data points the lie has no space between within a range of values. bars Line: points are connected by a line. In “less than type ogive, we have a Used to show the Quantitative OGIVE increasing curve graph cumulative frequency data while in “more than type distribution ogive, we have a decreasing curve graph. Categorical data- is a data that is divided into groups or qualitative characteristic. There is no order to categorical values and variables. EXAMPLES: Gender (male and female), Favorite Colors, cellphones, Celebrities, brand of soap an etc. Quantitative data – is a data measured and expressed numerically. It has numerical meaning and is used in calculations and arithmetic. EXAMPLES: weight, temperature, height, annual income, number of hours of sleep etc. What appropriate graphs to use to represent a given organized data? The appropriate statistical graph depends on the type of data collected and the purpose of collecting the data. ⚫ A pie chart is most appropriate when we want to show the relative size of each data set in proportion to the entire data set. ⚫ A bar graph is most appropriate when we want to compare between the data sets, and we want to know the exact numerical values. ⚫ A line graph is most appropriate when we want to show trends over period. ⚫ In an ungrouped data, a histogram is most appropriate when we want to know the exact values of the frequencies of the data sets and identify the lowest and highest frequencies. ⚫ In a grouped data, a histogram is most appropriate when we want to clearly display a large set of data and do not need exact the values of the original data. ⚫ An ogive is most appropriate when we want to clearly display the cumulative frequencies of data points that are less than and more than the value in a data set. 5
⚫ Pie chart and Bar graph are appropriate to use when you have a categorical data. ⚫ Line graph, Histogram, and Ogive are appropriate to use when you have a quantitative data. EXAMPLE: The table shows the number of students who travel to school using different mode of transportation. Mode of Transportation Jeep Tricycle Single Motorcycle Walking Number of students 320 160 200 120 What appropriate graph to use in this kind of data? - A bar graph is the appropriate graph for this kind of data. - But if you want to see the percentage of students travel using different transportation, the pie chart can also display this kind of information. What’s More Directions: Choose the appropriate graph to use in the given information by writing the letter that corresponds to your answer. A B C D E Pie Chart Bar Graph Line Graph Histogram Ogive 1. A number of laptops purchased by the company in each year from 2009 to 2013. 2. Daily income of Cumulative Number of workers Workers frequency 200 - 250 60 60 250 - 300 90 150 300 - 450 50 200 3.
