COVID-19 REPORT

SUMMARY
• The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases globally is now over 9 million with more than 470,000 deaths
    recorded, according to Worldometer.
• The WHO Chief, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has said a lack of global leadership and solidarity is worsening
the pandemic and warned that the pandemic is "still accelerating".

• The International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the WHO have joined forces to launch an initiative to encourage
communities around the world to be #HEALTHY Together in an attempt to reduce the spread and impact of
COVID-19. Antonio Guterres, Secretary General of the United Nations advises “WHO will work with athletes to
bring tailored health messages to people who are living through various stages of the pandemic through digital
platforms. We need to pay attention to our own mental and physical health and help others who may need extra
support. By working together, the aim of the partnership on Olympic Day and every day is to stay Healthy
    Together”.
• The WHO have released a Mr Bean’s essential COVID-19 checklist to encourage the public to remain vigilant.
Original Mr Bean actor Rowan Atkinson voices the announcement and the project is co-ordinated by Project
Everyone headed by Richard Curtis who said “We are delighted to work with the WHO on this Mr Bean sketch
and to support health messaging around COVID-19. In 2015 193 world leaders committed to 17 Global Goals to
end poverty, inequality, and climate change by 2030. Good Health and Wellbeing is Goal 3 and central to
achieving all of the Global Goals. It’s key that we work with creative partners - and that all sectors come together
to continue to get messages out about how we can tackle COVID-19 and build back a better world where the
Global Goals remain the guiding plan to be achieved by 2030. I’m not QUITE sure which sector Mr Bean belongs
too - but we're delighted to have him on board.”

   • The UK government’s COVID-19 daily updates ceased as of yesterday as Prime Minister Boris Johnson
announced a significant easing of lockdown restrictions from July 4th. See following page for details of the eased
       restrictions.
   • Shielding is to stop in England on 1st August for the extremely vulnerable groups, those most at risk from
becoming ill from COVID-19. From 6th July those that have been shielding will be able to meet up outdoors in a
group with up to five others and form ‘support bubbles’. From August they can go to work, if not able to work
from home if their place of work is COVID secure. Social distancing should still be practised, and hands washed
regularly to reduce the risk of infection. The changes mean those shielding will no longer be eligible for statutory
sick pay, unless they develop COVID-19 symptoms, or someone they know develops symptoms, and they are
told to self-isolate and cannot work from home.
   • Cinemas, museums, and galleries will be able to reopen in England from 4th July; The UK Government has
announced they will work with establishments to provide clear guidance on how to maintain social distancing.
Gyms will be remained closed until further notice.
   • The Office of National Statistics today announced 91% of COVID-19 related deaths in England and Wales had at
least 1 pre-existing condition. The most common pre-existing condition was dementia/ Alzheimer’s disease
followed by ischaemic heart disease, then influenza and pneumonia and chronic lower respiratory diseases.
   • The first volunteer to be injected with the potential COVID-19 vaccine received ‘” a small dose” on June 19th.

With a further 15 volunteers expected to receive doses in the next few days. Imperial College London are
responsible for the study and report the volunteer is in good health with no safety concerns. A further booster
dose will be given in four weeks. Human trials for Oxford University’s study began in April.
 • Scotland’s Education Secretary John Swinney announced today they intend to return all pupils to school when
the new term starts in August if the “coronavirus continues to be suppressed”. He added “However, because it
has to be achieved safely, it inevitably remains conditional and dependent upon ongoing scientific and health
     advice.”

ASIA
   India
India has recorded a further 15,968 new cases today (a single day record) and 465 new deaths. This comes amid
an easing of lockdown restrictions for most states. The army has been drafted in to assist in treating victims.
India has the World’s 4th highest COVID-19 case total.

   South Korea
South Korea authorities advise of a second wave of COVID-19 and warn of re-imposing social distancing measures
if the infection rate does not reduce. A bank holiday weekend in early May was blamed for the new wave of
   infections.

    AFRICA

    South Africa
South Africa’s Health Minister Zweli Mkhize has warned South Africans to brace themselves for the peak of
COVID-19 infections describing the coming months as “a decimating and devastating storm”. South Africa has
seen an increase in reported cases recently reaching over 4,000 a day.

   AMERICAS
   Brazil
Brazil has become the second country after the United States to register more than 50,000 COVID-19 deaths. It
has occurred just one day after the country confirmed it had passed the 1 million mark for confirmed cases.

   United States of America
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Head Dr Robert Redfield has reported to congress the COVID-19
virus outbreak could cost the US in excess of $7bn as cases reached record highs in 7 states (Arizona, Arkansas,
California, North Carolina, Tennessee and Texas).
Since June 10th, the average daily cases has increased to more than 28,000 after a dip to below 20,000 in the first
   week of June.

   EUROPE
   Spain
Spanish authorities have identified 3 areas in Aragon (north Eastern Spain) that are required to go back to the last
phase of the lockdown de-escalation process. 33 new cases were recorded on Monday 22nd June. “We tackled the
outbreak very early and managed to identify cases because we were looking for them,” said the region’s Director
General of public health, Francisco Javier Falo.

   France
France prepares to open schools to all under 15-year olds from Monday 29th June. This comes after reports of
clashes between Police and music festival attendees on Sunday 21st June. ‘Fete de la Musique’ was monitored
closely by Police to ensure the crowd were complying with social distancing measures.

                                                                                                                    7

AUSTRALIA / OCEANIA
    Australia
Melbourne announces a new coronavirus outbreak as Victoria has recorded 116 cases in the last 7 days. 75% of
the increase is believed to have come from ‘community transmission’. Victoria also recorded Australia’s first
COVID-19 related death in a month. An elderly man died after the recent surge in new cases

    New Zealand
Authorities in New Zealand have announced stricter measures to strengthen its border as flights to the islands
increase. “We remain in a phase of border containment” announced Prime Minster Jacinda Ardern. 14 days of
quarantine are in effect for anyone arriving into the country with the added measure of testing negative for
COVID-19 before you are allowed to leave.

    MIDDLE EAST
   Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia has announced it will hold a "very limited" Hajj this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The holy city
of Mecca is the site of pilgrimage for around 2 million people at the end of July and maintaining social distancing
would be impossible. Only inhabitants of Saudi Arabia will be allowed to take part and international visitors will be
banned from attending. Numbers would likely have been down anyway on last year due to the travel bans still in
effect across different countries and Indonesia has already withdrawn from the pilgrimage over fears of the virus
being spread. The lack of numbers this year will be a severe loss of revenue for the economy, already struggling
with the economic effects of COVID-19 and a drop in oil prices. The ban will be a severe blow for many Muslims
who have to plan in advance for one of the most significant moments in the Muslim religious calendar.

   Israel
The Israeli government has announced the potential reintroduction of lockdown measures amid a sharp rise in
COVID-19 cases. New infections have jumped by 300 cases in recent days. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu
has insisted on more focus on social distancing to avoid another lockdown.

                                                                                                                     8
