COVID-19 REPORT SUMMARY • The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases globally is now over 9 million with more than 470,000 deaths recorded, according to Worldometer. • The WHO Chief, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has said a lack of global leadership and solidarity is worsening the pandemic and warned that the pandemic is "still accelerating". • The International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the WHO have joined forces to launch an initiative to encourage communities around the world to be #HEALTHY Together in an attempt to reduce the spread and impact of COVID-19. Antonio Guterres, Secretary General of the United Nations advises “WHO will work with athletes to bring tailored health messages to people who are living through various stages of the pandemic through digital platforms. We need to pay attention to our own mental and physical health and help others who may need extra support. By working together, the aim of the partnership on Olympic Day and every day is to stay Healthy Together”. • The WHO have released a Mr Bean’s essential COVID-19 checklist to encourage the public to remain vigilant. Original Mr Bean actor Rowan Atkinson voices the announcement and the project is co-ordinated by Project Everyone headed by Richard Curtis who said “We are delighted to work with the WHO on this Mr Bean sketch and to support health messaging around COVID-19. In 2015 193 world leaders committed to 17 Global Goals to end poverty, inequality, and climate change by 2030. Good Health and Wellbeing is Goal 3 and central to achieving all of the Global Goals. It’s key that we work with creative partners - and that all sectors come together to continue to get messages out about how we can tackle COVID-19 and build back a better world where the Global Goals remain the guiding plan to be achieved by 2030. I’m not QUITE sure which sector Mr Bean belongs too - but we're delighted to have him on board.” GLOBAL MAP OF CASES OF COVID-19 Source: Centre for Disease Control and Prevention 24.06.2020 COVID -19/RAS/24th June 2020 2

AUSTRALIA / OCEANIA Australia Melbourne announces a new coronavirus outbreak as Victoria has recorded 116 cases in the last 7 days. 75% of the increase is believed to have come from ‘community transmission’. Victoria also recorded Australia’s first COVID-19 related death in a month. An elderly man died after the recent surge in new cases New Zealand Authorities in New Zealand have announced stricter measures to strengthen its border as flights to the islands increase. “We remain in a phase of border containment” announced Prime Minster Jacinda Ardern. 14 days of quarantine are in effect for anyone arriving into the country with the added measure of testing negative for COVID-19 before you are allowed to leave. MIDDLE EAST Saudi Arabia Saudi Arabia has announced it will hold a "very limited" Hajj this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The holy city of Mecca is the site of pilgrimage for around 2 million people at the end of July and maintaining social distancing would be impossible. Only inhabitants of Saudi Arabia will be allowed to take part and international visitors will be banned from attending. Numbers would likely have been down anyway on last year due to the travel bans still in effect across different countries and Indonesia has already withdrawn from the pilgrimage over fears of the virus being spread. The lack of numbers this year will be a severe loss of revenue for the economy, already struggling with the economic effects of COVID-19 and a drop in oil prices. The ban will be a severe blow for many Muslims who have to plan in advance for one of the most significant moments in the Muslim religious calendar. Israel The Israeli government has announced the potential reintroduction of lockdown measures amid a sharp rise in COVID-19 cases. New infections have jumped by 300 cases in recent days. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has insisted on more focus on social distancing to avoid another lockdown. 8 COVID -19/RAS/24th June 2020
