WEST VIRGINIA QUILT DOCUMENTATION PROJECT We had a successful documentation day during the Jackson’s Mill Retreat last year so let’s try it again in 2018. The goal is to gather information on quilts made before 1970 that were made in, or currently reside in, West Virginia. Make an appointment (Friday, March 16th between 10am and 4pm) and a team of volunteers will measure, photograph, date and ID the pattern. Bring infor- mation and pictures of the quiltmaker, but “maker unknown” quilts are also welcomed. Data gath- ered will be stored in the WV Culture Center Archives and will be uploaded to the Quilt Index (www.quiltindex.org). Information about quilt ownership will remain confidential. Contact Fran Kordek for more information or to make an appointment (304-636-7973, kordekfran@gmail.com). If you enjoy getting up close and personal to some pretty special quilts, contact Fran to volunteer. More information about the documentation project is on the WV Quilters, Inc. web site on the Docu- mentation page (www.wvquilters.org). The West Virginia Quilt Documentation Project is sponsored by West Virginia Quilters, Inc., in collaboration with the West Virginia Division of Culture and Histo- ry. Submitted by the WV Quilt Documentation Project Committee SCHOLARSHIP—to honor MARTHA OFFUTT Martha Offutt, one of the five instructors at the first Lewis County Quilt Retreat, passed away in October, 2016. She was recognized at our 20th anniversary in 2016. Martha taught quilting and needlework through- out West Virginia. From one-day classes to week-long events, Martha shared her expertise and extended her friendship to thousands of students in our state and beyond. She had a wide range of skills and taught classes from applique to Hawaiian Quilting to Dimensional Embroidery. She designed patterns and was most probably most well-known for her West Virginia Rose. Martha was active with the West Virginia Quilters and served on the steering committee for the first Quilt Documentation project. This committee’s work resulted in publication of the book, West Virginia Quilts and Quiltmakers, in 2000. After Martha’s passing in 2016, her family listed organizations that were important to her as sugges- tions for memorial donations. The Lewis County Quilt Retreat was one of those. A scholarship which will cover the registration fee of $80. will be offered to one student for the 2018 retreat. The scholarship recipient will be chosen based on a brief application from the individual or a nomi- nation from one or more others (retreat participants, guild members, or other friends). The person must be a first-time participant in the Lewis County Quilt Retreat with the 2018 retreat. To apply, or nominate someone, submit a regular retreat registration form and a brief (300 words or less) statement about the person and his/her interest in learning to quilt or to improve existing skills. Applications, nominations are due December 1, 2017, as the other registrations are. Following judging, the applicants will be contacted. The scholarship recipient will be offered the op- portunity to accept the scholarship and pay other fees (meals and lodging). Applicants not receiving the scholarship will be given the choice of completing their registration with registration fees or de- clining their registration. 3

We will refresh ourselves on proper cutting methods and achieving an accurate ¼” seam, and explore all the various techniques for making half square triangles. Once students have tested the different methods, they can then decide what they prefer to complete their chosen block/quilt design. Keep in mind that, just as with the Building Blocks I class, there is no set pattern or quilt design for this course. A number of block designs will be demonstrated so that students may choose for themselves how they wish to set their newly minted units. This course is intended to help quilting novices build a basic knowledge base and skill set that will give them confidence in their ability to produce consistently sized and accurately pieced blocks, and consequently, reduce frustration and add joy to the quiltmaking process. It is the second in a planned series of skill-building workshops. Each subsequent class will handle a new technique – suggestions are welcome. Bring own fabric and other sup- plies. Description: This quilt is very easy to make; it just gives the illusion of being hard. Other patterns by Martha Offutt will also be available for purchase. Description: Discover a relaxing new hand work technique for those hours spent in front of the TV. This class will focus on the embroidery stitches needed to make beautiful raised embroidery flowers and foliage. These can then be used to turn an ordinary item into something extraordinary. Many of the stitches can also be used for crazy quilting. Once the stitches are mastered, we will work on using the stitches to make a block with a basket and flowers. You can continue to make different baskets or use a single one to make a pillow. All you need to bring to class is a thimble and scissors. (needle, scraps to practice on, and thread will be provided) LET’S GET IT QUILTED—parts 2 and 3 (Intro to Free Motion Quilting/Basic Feathering Instructor: Sue Papouschek Level: Confident beginner Technique: Machine Materials fee: None Description: This class will substantially expand your home machine quilting and design capabilities. MAKING MEMORIES (BEAR OR WALL HANGING) Instructor: Sheila Maxey Level: Beginner and Up Technique: Machine Materials fee: None Description: This class is for everyone who has sentimental clothing, ties, or baby clothes and wants to make a keepsake----but just can’t take the first step in cutting into those fabrics/ties/clothes. MODERN MOSAICS Instructor: Patti Anderson Level: Advanced Beginner & Up Technique: Machine Materials fee: $5.00 for pattern and handouts Description: White strips bring new life to fabric scraps! (WEEKEND WORKSHOPS CONTINUED) MYSTERY QUILT Instructor: Ruth Ann Johnson Level: All Technique: Machine Materials fee: $1.00 for printing Description: It is a Mystery, all right, but it is friendly. Beginning quilter with little experience, or very advance quilters with lots of experience will enjoy doing this quilt. It is easy; however, it is a little time consuming. It will utilize lots of dark colored scrap strips (2 1/2 by 22 inches) plus fabric for joining those scrappy fab- rics. The idea with this quilt is to share extra scrap strips with others in the class. Everyone will have as many different dark colored pieces as possible. When you arrive back home, you will be able to point to different pieces and say, "these pieces are from my friends at Jackson's Mill”—and solve the Mystery. PURSE Instructor: Sandy Sheffield Level: All Technique: Machine Materials fee: Kit will be available for pre-order Description: Purses come in all sizes and shapes and with some of the new hardware, you can make them very professional looking. Learn to adjust a pat- tern, sew blocks on grid like the pattern, crosshatch quilt with a double needle, add a zipper, self bind, add in invisible magnet, grommets, purse feet, are some of the topics we will discuss. We will make the Maddy Lynn baglike the picture which has been adjusted in size, has an outside hidden pocket. The bottom half with the squares is made on grid. Come and make a nice purse. REVERSE APPLIQUE Instructor: Jackie Perry Level: Confident beginner/Intermediate Technique: Hand Materials fee: None Description: Using only two batik fat quarters, you will learn an interesting technique for reverse appliqué. You will learn how to transfer the pattern to fabric, cut work and appliqué. Color de- sign and contrast and values will also be explored. SIZE OF FINISHED PROJECT: Suitable for a pillow or a wall hanging. 7
(WEEKEND WORKSHOPS CONTINUED) STAR FLOWER Instructor: Tresha Cottrill Level: Confident Beginner Technique: Machine Materials fee: None Description: This contemporary quilt has a nostalgic feel with its white background and bright colors. Change the color scheme and you could create a very modern look. The pattern uses 60 degree diamonds to make stars with a playful flair. Students will learn to execute set-in seams with confidence. STARS IN THE GARDEN Instructor: Janet Andrews Level: Intermediate Technique: Machine Materials fee: None Description: Piece two traditional blocks together, and watch secondary patterns emerge! Be creative with your color pallete. Pattern will be mailed to you with confirmation letter (a $3 pattern fee will be collected in class). This quilt as pictured measures 50” x 74”, but can be made larger by making more blocks or adding more borders. STUDIO Instructor: Fran Kordek Level: All Technique: Machine or hand—appropriate to project Materials fee: None Description: This time is intended for those who would appreciate the op- portunity to get away, be with other quilters, and have a chance to work on their own project. Take this opportunity to finish one of your own pro- jects rather than start a new one - all under the watchful eye of an experi- enced instructor. 8
