Pasadena & Foothill '21 DESIGN AWARDS GALA Be Part of Architectural Excellence AIA PASADENA & FOOTHILL '21 DAG
Pasadena & Foothill Sponsorship Invitation Dear Supporter, The American Institute of Architects Pasadena & Foothill Chapter (AIAPF) is pleased to present our annual Design Awards Gala (DAG) honoring architectural design excellence at the local chapter level. The Design Awards Gala recognizes significant architectural and landscape projects that have been built by chapter members since 1948. We have invited architects, landscape architects, and students to submit projects in various categories (Commercial, Educational, Industrial, Institutional, Students, etc,) and which have been evaluated by a jury of architects, of diverse backgrounds, who will select the award-winning projects. One of the noteworthy highlights of this event is our commitment to education. The most successful scholarship program among the AIA California Chapters is our Jean Roth Driskel Scholarship Fund managed by the JRD Committee in association with the California Community Foundation. The JRD Committee will be presenting the recipients with their awards at our Gala. The scholarship was established in 1971 in memory of Jean Roth Driskel, the first female President of the AIA Pasadena & Foothill Chapter, to honor her great love for and the profession of, architecture. As a Chapter, we still maintain and preserve the importance of supporting our students and young professionals throughout their careers. Registration opened on the 25th of February with design submissions due on the 25th of March and the Design Awards Gala will take place on Saturday, May 7th, 2022. This engaging in-person event will include political leaders, architects, professional consultants, contractors, and building owners, and will provide an opportunity to honor the award winners in a celebratory setting. Architects are innovators, community leaders, and key decision-makers with enormous spending responsibilities. Highly regarded and respected, our professional opinions are widely valued in real estate development, selection of construction products, design tools, commercial and residential finishes, interior fixtures and furnishings, landscape materials, and more. As an early adopter of industry trends, the average architect influences a wide circle of clients, friends, and colleagues-creating a potential market footprint of several billion dollars. As stewards of the built environment, we focus on intelligent design to responsibly provide for future generations. Please find our official sponsorship package attached, for your review and consideration. Do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions, or to request further. details. We thank you and look forward to working to have you as a highlighted Sponsor for this event. This is a great opportunity for us to work together in supporting Pasadena’s design and construction community and the next generation of architects. Sincerely, Winston Thorne, AIA, NOMA, NCARB, CSBA 2022 President AIA PASADENA & FOOTHILL '21 DAG Page 2

We are involved in all aspects of building design and are committed to professional excellence and the improvement of our city’s environment and public space. We have a code of ethics and are dedicated to the highest standards of professional practice. As an AIA chapter, we are committed to nurturing the next generation of architects through our educational programs and a scholarship foundation that raises money to assist architectural students. We also provide monthly continuing education programs for architects and engineers so they are knowledgeable about the latest building codes, products, materials, and systems used in our professions. We foster relationships with other professional societies and maintain contact with our elected officials regarding professional and public issues that concern the built environment. Since our chapter has had an enormous amount of development in the past 72 years, we decided to join together in a DAG that honors the exciting work being done in collaboration to celebrate architectural excellence. Pasadena & Foothill History In 1948 nine tenacious charter architects broke off from the Southern California Chapter of AIA to became incorporated and subsequently granted a charter at the 80th AIA National Convention in Salt Lake City on June 25, 1948. World War II had been over for three years and Southern California was a place of exuberance, expansion, and what seemed to be limitless possibilities. The first “freeway” in the country, The Pasadena, was nearly complete, and sleepy towns amid fragrant orange groves were resounding to the echo of hammers, saws, and an accelerated communal heartbeat. The population was burgeoning and the architects and builders of Southern California were responding to an unprecedented building boom. With a proclaimed focus on service and the goal of “handling problems in zoning, civic buildings [and] schools” the Chapter began its existence. Over the next 74 years, this Chapter has consistently honored these early goals by continuing to: Honor our own with Design Awards Gala for the best architectural design accomplished by its members. Sponsor community service programs in support of the schools in our Communities. Sponsor members as Fellows, FAIA, in recognition of outstanding service to the profession and the Community. Be recognized in the greater Los Angeles area for outstanding architectural license preparation seminars. Honor architectural students for significant and creative student work and foster close relationships with architecture schools. Award student scholarships in the name of Jean Roth Driskel, FAIA. Ms. Driskel began her practice in Pasadena in 1949 and was influential throughout the State in affairs of the profession and particularly in the development of the role of the woman architect. Her legacy lives on in the scholarship founded in her name. Create effective avenues of public outreach by fostering a network of connections among the AIA and industry, business, and potential client referrals. Participate in civic partnerships through participation in workshops and task forces organized to address planning and design issues. Present programs, seminars, and workshops on topics that advance the knowledge and skills of our members. Be recognized by the AIA California Council’s Academy of Emerging Professionals for the development of superb programming and fostering the highest qualities of leadership within the emerging professional membership. The Chapter has for 74 years honored its mandated responsibility to its members, the community, the profession, and to nurturing the architects of the future. This commitment continues to forge the future trajectory of this dynamic group of architects. AIA PASADENA & FOOTHILL '21 DAG Page 10
