OAM 2022 SPRING CONFERENCE
                                    OVERVIEW - WELCOME

Welcome back!
The Ohio Association of Magistrates is happy to host our first in-person
conference since the onset of Covid-19. We are pleased to welcome you to the
2022 Spring Conference being held at the Kalahari Resort in Sandusky, Ohio.
You will find a variety of education sessions that address procedural and
legal issues facing magistrates in the current legal environment.
The sessions commence on Wednesday, May 4, 2022, with a plenary
session. The speakers will deal with equality, equity, and inclusion in the court
system. Afghan immigration is also a current issue to be covered during this
session. Additionally, we will be educated on the issues raised by digital devices in
our lives. On Thursday, May 5, we will delve into substantive areas of importance
and interest in each of the following practice areas, Domestic Relations, Juvenile,
Probate, Common Pleas, Municipal, and Retired Magistrates with outstanding
presenters in each breakout session. The final plenary session will be held on
Friday, May 6. We will discuss ethics and consider these issues by studying
Hollywood movies. This session is presented by Joel Oster, Esq., Comedian of Law,
President and General Counsel.
This year’s volunteer opportunity will be a 5K Run/Walk to benefit OhioCan,
whose mission is to embrace, educate and empower those whose lives have been
impacted by substance abuse. The Run/Walk is scheduled for Wednesday before
the evening reception. Those not able to participate in the event may choose to
donate via the OAM website to this worthy organization.
When not fulfilling your education requirements, you and your family can
enjoy the indoor water park and a host of other attractions: Underwater Virtual
Reality; Safari Animal Park; Adventure Climbing Wall; Rhino Express, Mini Bowling;
and the Big Game Room. For all Kalahari activities visit by clicking here.

                                    VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY

This year, we will host our 7th annual OAM Charity Fundraiser. Join us in a 5K/1 Mile Walk
to benefit OhioCan. Take this opportunity to join friends to create a positive impact outside
the courtroom.

OhioCan seeks to help all those impacted by substance abuse, the user and those closest
to them who also feel the effects. They advocate on behalf of these individuals and
families in a non-judgmental way. They offer peer to peer support to individual, families
and friends regardless of their recovery status. They also seek to educate communities
about substance use, medical based treatment and practices to reduce harm and
promote health and wellness.

They employ a harm reduction approach working with family and friends of drug users.
Their motto, “You cannot control what happens to you, but you can control your attitude
toward what happens to you, and in that, you will be mastering change rather than
allowing it to master you.”

We look forward to seeing you there!

                       OAM Health and Safety Protocols
It is the desire of the OAM Board of Trustees to provide a safe and healthy Spring
Conference experience to our members, presenters, staff and guests while at Kalahari
Resort. In addition to adopting resort-wide wellness initiatives, Kalahari follows county,
state and CDC guidelines. At this time, there is not a mask requirement for guests or
staff, but physical distancing is encouraged and sanitizer stations are located
throughout the resort. To assure that everyone returns home infection-free, masks
should be worn during the conference when not eating or drinking for your own safety
and out of respect for others. At our request, the hotel staff will also be masked. If you
are sick or otherwise do not feel well, do not attend the conference. Our aim is to keep
all conference attendees as safe as possible, and your cooperation in this effort is
greatly appreciated. We will update the protocol if appropriate closer to the date.

                                                                                 Page 17

                                  MENTOR PROGRAM

                   JUDICIAL COLLEGE MENTOR PROGRAM

                             Program Description
Pursuant to Rule X for the Government of the Bar, all new magistrates must
participate in a one-year mentoring program as part of The Magistrate
Orientation Program. The Judicial College Mentor Program seeks to elevate the
competence, collegiality, and success of Ohio’s judiciary.

What is required of a mentor?
The mentor’s responsibility is to provide information, assistance, and
encouragement to the new magistrate during the first year on the bench. The
program requires four quarterly contacts over the course of a twelve-month
period. These contacts can be virtual and in-person. Most mentors find the
time requirement to be minimal in comparison to what they gain from the
experience.

What are the benefits to the mentor?
Mentors gain:
   1. A renewed sense of purpose in their work and profession;
   2. An opportunity to give back to the judicial community and to leave a
       legacy; and
   3. A chance to reflect on their own practices.

When registering, you will have the opportunity to sign-up to become a mentor.

                                                                     Page 18
