WELCOME RACE DIRECTOR Greetings, Triathletes! Welcome to the 4th running (and 5th year) of the Trainual IRONMAN 70.3 Indian Wells - La Quinta! What an excellent week to race, sandwiched neatly between the U.S.’s Thanksgiving holiday, and leading into Christmas and the New Year, along with the holidays celebrated by so many cultures and traditions. As we are a global, multi-cultural organization, I say to all of you Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Holidays, and even a Happy Festivus! It’s such an honor to be stepping into the role of Race Director this year, after working the event on the Course team since year one. The founding Race Director, Sabrina Houston, has established such a tremendous event, and though I couldn’t possibly hope to fill her shoes, I do intend to do everything in my power to continue the tradition of putting on the best possible 70.3 event, right here in the Coachella Valley. I and the rest of the IRONMAN team, including our incredible army of volunteers, are committed to ensuring that you have a fantastic racing experience, from start to finish line. While you’re here admiring the views of the Santa Rosa Mountains, make sure and take advantage of the many luxurious amenities that the cities of Indian Wells and La Quinta have to offer. From world-class locations for hitting the links, to some of the most incredible dining options in this part of the world, this destination is unique in its texture. You won’t find a similar feel at any other destination race in our circuit! As for the race, Lake Cahuilla (a freshwater remnant of the Salton Sea) will be where you start, followed by a flat bike course, weaving through the Coachella Valley amongst palm trees and date farms, all yielding breathtaking desert vistas. Finally, your 13.1-mile run will start and finish at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, with most of your miles on the cart path in the Indian Wells Golf Resort. I wanted to share a few notes for the week: 1. Please pay special attention to the wetsuit decontamination procedure, unique to this race. 2. Also, our hosts at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden have requirements around COVID-19, which are outlined in this guide. 3. There can be no swimming in Lake Cahuilla before race day, though I do highly encourage visiting the veterans memorial located there! 4. Finally, we can’t run at the Indian Wells Golf Resort prior to the race. However, getting a tee time is recommended, if you’re a golfer. Make sure and read this guide, and attend one of the mandatory Athlete Briefings, even if you regularly race our events. There’s always something new to learn, as well as critical information unique to the event itself. You’ve trained so hard for this, and I have such a high level of admiration for you. I can’t wait to see you accomplish this goal, some of you for the very first time. Race YOUR race, this weekend. Pay attention to your nutrition and hydration plans. Listen to your body, and most importantly, have an amazing time. Special thanks to the Cities of Indian Wells, La Quinta, Indio, and Palm Desert, the County of Riverside, Riverside County Parks, the Coachella Valley Water District, and the Torres Martinez Desert Cahuilla Indians. They are our hosts, and we’re so grateful for their partnership and support of this premier triathlon. Let’s be most excellent guests of these communities as we play in this sport we love so much. Congratulations on making it this far. I’ll see you on race day. Dan James Race Director 3

WETSUIT DECONTAMINATION Riverside County Parks and Coachella Valley Water District (CVWD) have announced a wetsuit safety protocol for triathlon events using Lake Cahuilla in La Quinta. The protocol is designed to eliminate the possibility of introducing the quagga mussel into Lake Cahuilla and the CVWD water system. The CVWD decontamination protocol requires all wetsuits be submerged in water containing 2 parts per million chlorine solution for 15 seconds. To ensure the protocol is followed, athletes will bring their dry wetsuit to Bike Check-In where it will be submerged in the solution. After athletes decontaminate their wetsuit, they will need to go to the Gear Bag and Wetsuit Area located outside of Transition 1 and hang their wetsuit along with their Bike Gear Bag. No one will be permitted in Lake Cahuilla without a decontaminated wetsuit. If athletes intend to wear neoprene caps or booties, these will need to be decontaminated as well and left on site. 9
WETSUIT PROTOCOL Riverside County Parks and Coachella Valley Water District (CVWD) have announced a wetsuit safety protocol for triathlon events using Lake Cahuilla in La Quinta, CA. These protocols, designed to eliminate the possibility of introducing the quagga mussel into Lake Cahuilla and the CVWD water system, will be in effect for the 2022 Trainual IRONMAN 70.3 Indian Wells - La Quinta. Quagga mussels are freshwater mollusks capable of colonizing water bodies such as lakes, rivers, streams and water conveyance channels and pipes. Quagga mussels multiply rapidly, with females able to produce 1 million eggs per year. Microscopic larvae develop after fertilization, drifting in the water until finding a suitable place for attachment. Strong threads produced by the mussel attach the shell to most surfaces and often remain attached long after the mussel has died. In order to ensure that quagga mussels are not unknowingly transported on athletes’ wetsuits, Riverside County Parks and CVWD will require that all dry wetsuits be immersed in a pool containing chlorine at a concentration of 2.0 ppm for at least 15 seconds before participants can enter Lake Cahuilla. The athletes’ wetsuits must be dry prior to decontamination. Athletes who have completed this process will be issued a tag to be attached to their wetsuit strap. Only athletes with this tag will be permitted in the lake. All athletes are required to leave their wetsuits in Transition 1 on December 3, 2022. We will make the process as quick and straightforward as possible by including detailed instructions in this Athlete Guide and presented during the mandatory Athlete Briefings on Friday, December 2 and Saturday, December 3. We will have dedicated staff, a volunteer captain and volunteers oversee the process at the race site. Additional information can also be requested by contacting the event staff at INDIANWELLSLAQUINTA70.3@IRONMAN.COM. Protecting Lake Cahuilla from the invasive quagga mussel is important to the entire Coachella Valley and to the continued ability to use the Lake Cahuilla for recreational purposes, including Trainual IRONMAN 70.3 Indian Wells - La Quinta. Thank you for your cooperation! 10

This allocation is done across both the male and female categories AFTER THE RACE: o Before Rolldown: If there are no finishers in an Age Group that had one or more starters, then the Initially Allocated Slot for that Age Group is re-allocated, within the same gender, to the Age Group with the highest ratio of starters to slots o During Rolldown: If any slot allocated to an Age Group is unclaimed (after Rolldown for that Age Group is completed), then that unclaimed slot is re- allocated, within the same gender, to the Age Group with the highest ratio of starters to slots. 21
