Kenneth Holdt, Director of Choral Activities 513.686.1770 ext. 6601 holdtk@sycamoreschools.org David Swift, Associate Director of Choral Activities swiftd@sycamoreschools.org Nicholas Wright, Octaviation Green Director wrightn@sycamoreschools.org Dear Sycamore Community, Welcome to the 2022-2023 school year, and another season of singing with the Sycamore High School Choral Program! We hope you will return throughout the year to support and enjoy the greatly talented students of the choral program. The performance dates and times for the concert season are listed in this program booklet so you can be sure not to miss one moment of music making. Check out www.aveschoir.org for more info on our performances this year! Many thanks go to all the vocal booster patrons, and program book advertisers whose financial contributions have helped to make this year a success. Please take a moment to note our list of patrons on your concert program, and peruse all of the ads in this program book. Supporting these businesses and letting them know that you saw their ad in our program book is a great way to encourage their support in years to come. It is truly an honor and a privilege to teach these fine young people. The various cultures that the students of Sycamore represent have always been amazing! As teachers of the arts, we find that the power of music to expose students to a wide range of cultures is exciting! It engages students in cross-cultural learning that they can take with them the rest of their lives, providing benefits yet to be realized. We look forward to learning from the students about their various backgrounds and unique experiences, and facilitating the sharing of these experiences so as to promote understanding between and among cultures, and thereby, LIFE, through the conduit of choral music. Thank you, parents, for all of the thousands of ways you love and support your child. Thank you also to our principal, Taylor Porter, assistant principal Adrienne Sanders, and music department chair Micah Ewing; and the rest of the SHS administrators and support staff for all of their support of music and the arts. And finally, a big thank you to all of the music department faculty as we together assemble a strong, vibrant, and ever-evolving musical education for our students by providing a wide variety of musical opportunities that prepare students for a future in music whether that be for fun or for a career. We invite you to get involved as we work together to take the choral program to a new level, honoring the work and dedication that choral faculty and choral alumni began before us so that those students of the future have an even stronger choral music experience. Thank you again for coming to our performance today. We hope to see you again at choral concerts this year and in the years to come. Now: sit back, relax, and enjoy the show! Musically Yours, Kenneth Holdt David Swift Nicholas Wright Sycamore High School | 7400 Cornell Rd. | Cincinnati, OH 45242 | www.aveschoir.org 4
The Curricular Ensembles The Choral Program at Sycamore High School includes six ensembles for the 2022-2023 school year. All of the ensembles perform a diverse body of repertoire exposing students to many styles of music from throughout history and from around the world. This year’s concert season welcomes students and parents back with our Variety Show in October. All choirs present the Winter Concert in December.. Highlights of the late winter and spring include Solo and Ensemble Contest, Cabaret, Fine Arts Concert, and the Spring Concert & Awards Night. Aviator Chorale is open to 9th through 12th grade students. Many members are new to choir at Sycamore High School, while others have experience in choir and whose leadership is encouraged and fostered. This ensemble is large this year, so it spans two sections: Aviator Chorale Men and Aviator Chorale Ladies. 5
Extra-Curricular Ensembles Octaviation Green (junior varsity ) and Octaviation Gold (varsity) are open to 9th through 12th grade students. Admission to these a cappella ensembles is the result of a demonstration of specific skills at audition. Primary goals of this advanced ensemble consist of developing an a cappella singing style, strengthening vocal independence from instrumental accompaniment, providing opportunities for students to work in leadership capacities, nurturing concert poise and stage etiquette, and heightening students’ awareness and ability to establish and recreate excellent intonation and blend, and beatboxing. Octaviation Green and Octaviation Gold often represent Sycamore High School in the community. The Directors Ken Holdt is Director of Choral Activities at Sycamore HS. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from UC’s College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) with a bachelor’s degree in music education; primary instruments organ and trumpet. He earned a master’s degree in choral conducting (Florida State), and a second master’s degree in school leadership (Miami). He holds a Master Teacher Designation, Teacher Leader Endorsement and administrator’s license. In Sycamore, Mr. Holdt has taught at all levels, starting his career at Symmes Elementary; working with the JH Boy Choir; and teaching or co-teaching HS music theory, guitar, piano, band, and orchestra. He spearheaded the adoption effort of AP Music Theory, and serves on the district- and building-level professional development committees. As part of his work on the HS staff development committee, Mr. Holdt, along with the indelible Mr. Mike Gutekunst, crafted and delivered professional development for all HS teaching staff, and worked with K-12 music department staff, assisting them with the adoption of new teacher evaluation tools and incorporating ODE and Sycamore Community Schools’ initiatives into their instruction. Mr. Holdt wrote curriculum for the K-4 level, and acted as team lead for the latest edition of curriculum for the 5-12 choral program. A pianist, vocalist, trumpet player, and organist around the city, he also has been a conductor, clinician, and collaborative pianist with the Cincinnati Youth Choir; Lecturer in musical theatre at CCM’s Preparatory Department; and vocalist with the No Promises Vocal Band. He and his wife 6
Amber enjoy time with their four Aviators Lily (12), Isaac (10), Kate (8), and Hannah (6). Mr. Holdt is an Eagle scout hailing from Canfield, Ohio. David Swift is Associate Director of Choral Activities leading Aviator Chorale (men & ladies) and is in his 37th year as a professional educator. Mr. Swift has been transcriber, arranger, bassist, technology specialist, and instrumentalist manager for the choral program, coming to Sycamore in 1995 after teaching for 9 years in Northern Kentucky. David graduated in 1985 from Western Kentucky University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education. He also holds a Masters Degree from the University of Louisville and has done extensive coursework at North Texas State University, the University of Cincinnati, as well as Walsh, Duquesne, and Augustana Universities. Mr. Swift has an extensive background teaching band, orchestra, choir, jazz, music technology, study of rock, piano, guitar, music theory and K-8 general music. As Sycamore’s marching band and top wind ensemble director for 19 years, David consistently led groups to superior ratings and top awards around the region. In the course of his career, David has been a sought-after composer, arranger, clinician, and adjudicator throughout the Midwest. With travel as his passion, Mr. Swift now leads Sycamore student groups on musical enrichment trips to Europe each year. In addition to teaching, David is active as a saxophonist, guitarist, vocalist and bassist. On most weekends you will find David soloing as an acoustic guitar/vocalist at various venues around the Cincinnati area. David lives with his wife (Elizabeth), two of his children (Aaron and Bella), and two Australian Shepherds (Luna & Leo) in Lebanon. His two older boys (Ben and Christian) are in Nashville (one a college student and the other a recent graduate). Nicholas (Nick) Wright is the Director of Octaviation Green. For well over a decade now, Mr. Wright has worked as an arranger for many different groups at Sycamore High School. Outside of his work with Sycamore, Nick has created numerous award-winning arrangements for scholastic and professional ensembles worldwide. His work as an arranger and sound engineer has garnered several compilation placements, such as Best Of College A Cappella (BOCA) and Voices Only. In addition, Mr. Wright also volunteers his time as a reviewer for the Recorded A Cappella Review Board (RARB), and as an adjudicator for the 7
International Championships of High School and College A Cappella (ICHSA and ICCA). Nick has a vast background in writing, teaching, and recording contemporary vocal music. Mr. Wright studied arranging and composition at Miami University with Ethan Sperry (choral), Glen Roger Davis (instrumental), Stephen Lytle (instrumental), and Per Bloland (electronic). During his time at Miami, Nick had the opportunity to perform in a wide variety of venues including Carnegie Hall and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York, the World Expo in Shanghai, the Great Wall of China, and Kalakshetra - India’s most sacred performance space. While traveling throughout India studying Solkattu and Carnatic music, Nick also had the privilege of collaborating with Grammy Award-winning film composer, A.R. Rahman, on popular Bollywood orchestral arrangements of “Maa Tujhe Salaam” (from Vande Mataram) and “Dil Se Re” (from Dil Se). Mr. Wright currently lives in Cincinnati, OH where he works as a wedding/event DJ for Party Pleasers Services, and also regularly contributes to works of both vocal and instrumental music as a composer, arranger, orchestrator, clinician, and producer. Since 2008, he has written music for ensembles around the world. 8
