Selective Admission Requirements Emergency Medical Technician/Paramedic 2021 Deadline for all requirements July 1, 2021 The requirements for the Paramedic Program are different than the requirements for other Selective Admissions programs. MACOMB COMMUNITY COLLEGE SELECTIVE ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FALL 2021 Paramedic Program Deadline for ALL requirements is July 1, 2021 In order to be considered for the PARAMEDIC PROGRAM you must complete ALL requirements. All documentation must be on file at the designated departments as listed below by July 1, 2021 for the program starting Fall 2021. Macomb’s Selective Admission programs have assessment and admission requirements that are considerably different than other Macomb programs. It is encouraged that Selective Admission applicants attend a Selective Admission Seminar and meet with an academic advisor, counselor, or Program Director prior to taking the ATI TEAS exam and submitting an application to the program. This seminar and meeting will review the application process, program prerequisites and requirements. To arrange for the seminar, visit www.macomb.edu/SAseminar-others. APPLICATION REQURIEMENTS 1. Submit a paramedic program application here by July 1, 2021. Please retain the confirmation email from your submitted application for your records. If you are not a current or former student at Macomb Community College, you must also apply for admission and complete all admission steps. 2. Arrange for OFFICIAL COLLEGE OR HIGH SCHOOL TRANSCRIPT(S) to be sent directly from each institution attended to the Center Campus Records and Registration Office. Macomb Community College transcripts are not required to be sent. In order to meet the deadline of July 1st, 2021 it is recommended that you request to have your current name, date of birth and Macomb ID number posted on transcripts. Submit work experience with an EMS agency or in any job that involves direct patient contact in an emergency department. Note - This is not a requirement, but experience is included in ranking. The following PREREQUISITE COURSES must be completed by the end of the Winter 2021 semester prior to the application deadline of July 1, 2021. Candidates must successfully complete the following courses, or their equivalents at another accredited institution, as defined by Macomb Community College with a punitive grade of C (2.0 GPA) or better prior to the deadline date of July 1, 2021. A punitive grade is one that affects the grade point average. A grade of C- is not acceptable. A GPA will be calculated on the prerequisite courses. EMSA 1215 – Basic EMT Lecture EMSA 1220 – Basic EMT Lab EMSA 1250 – Clinical Rotation for Basic EMT *BIO 2710 is recommended, however not included in ranking. If you have received your Basic EMT training from a non-high school/college-based training program you must provide a copy of your current and unencumbered MICHIGAN BASIC EMT LICENSE as proof of training to selectiveadmissions@macomb.edu, which will exempt you from taking EMSA 1215, 1220, and 1250. Michigan Basic EMT license you will be awarded a “C” grade for those classes. This is for the purposes of ranking the applications only, and no actual college credits will be awarded. 2 REVISED 4/28/2021
If you have received your Basic EMT training from a Michigan High School, you must provide a copy of your completed high school official transcript showing successful completion of the basic EMT courses. You will be awarded a “C” grade for those classes. This is for the purposes ranking the applications only, and no actual college credits will be awarded. Please be advised that a Michigan Basic EMT license is a requirement for the second semester of the Paramedic program. Failure to receive your Michigan Basic EMT license will result in removal from the program. 4. Entrance testing assessment: ATI TEAS (see ATI TEAS document below for more information). Applicants must complete the ATI TEAS as part of the selective admission process. Early registration is highly recommended to secure a seat in a preferred session. The ATI TEAS must be completed at Macomb Community College; scores for this exam administered at other locations/institutions will not be accepted. The ATI TEAS scores remain active for 1 (one) selective admission cycle, or until departmental requirements change, whichever comes first. The students highest overall (composite) score is used for the ranking process. The ATI TEAS exam assesses the prospective student in the following academic subjects: Reading, Math, Science, and English and Language Usage. Students who have a documented disability should contact the Macomb Community College Special Services Department at 586.286.2237 (Center Campus) or 586.445.7420 (South Campus) to make advance arrangements for appropriate exam accommodations. This should be done at the time of ATI TEAS registration. RANKING All applicants whose documentation is complete and on file by the deadline date are ranked according to the following criteria. All prerequisite courses must be completed by the deadline date with a grade of C (2.0 GPA) or better to be ranked. ➢ The GRADE POINT AVERAGE (GPA) of the three prerequisite courses (EMSA 1215; EMSA 1220 and EMSA 1250) are computed and weighted at 40%. If you are applying without having taken EMSA 1215, 1220, and 1250 at Macomb Community College, but do submit a valid Michigan Basic EMT license you will be awarded a “C” grade for those classes. This is for the purpose of ranking the applications only, and no actual college credits will be awarded. ➢ The composite score of the ATI TEAS is weighted at 40%. The composite score is the average score of the cumulative results of all five components of the ATI TEAS. ➢ Work experience with an EMS agency or in any job that involves direct patient contact in an emergency department will improve your ranking in the admissions process. If you would like to receive the work experience benefit email your current professional resume to psi@macomb.edu by June 18, 2021. Note that this is a separate submission and due date. The program coordinator will evaluate your experience and include your work experience into your ranking. Your work experience with an EMS agency or in a hospital emergency department will be weighted at 20% based on the following rubric: Over 1-year experience =5 points 6 months to 1-year experience= 3 points Less than 6 months experience= 2 points No experience =0 points PROCESSING Applicants will be ranked in the Paramedic program ONLY if they have applied and completed all the requirements to the program BEFORE THE JULY 1, 2021 DEADLINE DATE. All applicants are notified by mail of the admission decision, no later than July 21, 2021. Applicants who are not admitted may apply for the following year but will not be given preference by reason of having applied before. Only those applicants selected for admission are required to submit a $100.00 non-refundable fee to confirm acceptance into the program. A mandatory orientation for successfully ranked candidates will be held in August 2021. No other orientation date will be offered; if you do not attend, it will be understood that you are not interested in entering the program and your name will be removed as a candidate. If you are selected as an alternate candidate, you must also attend the mandatory orientation. 3 REVISED 4/28/2021
CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECKS After conditional acceptance into the PARAMEDIC PROGRAM the following must be completed, and results submitted by August 15, 2021: • Criminal Background Check and Drug Screening: Testing positive for illegal substances or having conviction of certain crimes may prevent you from enrolling in the paramedic program, participating in clinical rotations, or obtaining a State EMS license. • A medical clearance physical (with completed Macomb Community College form) Failure to complete these requirements will result in a withdrawal of your acceptance. Macomb Community College’s clinical partners may not accept students who have been convicted of certain crimes into a clinical learning environment. Therefore, students must undergo a Criminal Background Check, at their own expense, through CastleBranch.com in order to be considered for admission. NOTE: Do not order your criminal background check at this time; students will get more information regarding the Criminal Background Check at the mandatory orientation. ATI TEAS: Admission Assessment Exam The ATI TEAS, or Test of Essential Academic Skills, is designed specifically to assess a student's preparedness entering the health science fields. The ATI TEAS test is comprised of 170 questions set up in a multiple-choice format with four-option answers. Questions are designed to test the basic academic skills you will need to perform in class in the areas of: Reading, Math, Science, and English and Language Usage. • For your Success: 2 opportunities- o ATI TEAS offers a FREE 6-week Preparation Course that is highly recommended (More information provided within CANVAS upon registration). o It is encouraged that Selective Admission applicants attend a Selective Admission Seminar prior to taking the ATI TEAS and applying to the program. This seminar will review the application process, program prerequisites and requirements. Contact the Counseling and Academic Advising Office at 586.445.7999 to reserve a seat for a seminar. • ATI TEAS Fee: $80.00 o Must be paid at time of registration. • NO REFUNDS: o There is Neither Rescheduling nor Refunds Allowed. Fees are Non-Refundable and Non-Transferable. REGISTRATION: Please note: Registration is a multi-step process requiring students to use MyMacomb and Canvas to complete the registration. I. Registration process for ATI TEAS begins February 22, 2021 II. If you are not a current or former student at Macomb Community College you must first apply for admission to the college and complete all admission steps. Students are encouraged to do this as soon as possible. 1. Follow these steps to Register for the ATI TEAS: o Step 1: You must be an admitted student to MCC and have your My Macomb account activated o Step 2: Register for ATI TEAS: ▪ Go to My.macomb.edu ▪ Go to Noncredit/Continuing Ed student ▪ Go to Registration ▪ Search and Register for Continuing Education Type in 5-digit Registration number: Refer to Upcoming Test date box below • Check box and Submit • Hit Submit again • From Drop down menu, click Register NOW • Select Payment type • This will direct you to website to make payment o Full payment is due at time of registration in order to proceed to TEAS registration. o Step 3: 24 hours after registration (Step 2), do the following: ▪ Go to online.macomb.edu 5 REVISED 4/28/2021
