Maximizing Space in the Garden: Creating More of a Good Thing Wednesday, February 24, 1:00-2:00pm A Zoom lecture by Tovah Martin No matter whether you are gardening in a close-knit neighborhood or a sprawling estate, you want to garden efficiently, prolifically, sustainably, and beautifully. You need to garden smartly and you’ve got to conserve your resources. This lecture focuses on all the points on your checklist. When you layer a garden, not only do you maximize space, but you can also create hard-working habitats. You can fulfill a balance that serves our needs as well as the needs of pollinators and other creatures. You can expect to hear many innovative ideas beyond the usual solutions. Tovah Martin is a horticulturalist, author, freelance writer, photo stylist, producer, and lecturer. In her constant, undying pursuit of all things garden-related, Tovah gets her hands dirty both outside and indoors. She is a perennial, heirloom, vegetable and cottage gardener of fanatical proportions, and is accredited with NOFA as an Organic Land Care Professional. Beyond the garden outdoors, Tovah’s areas of specialty also include decades of experience with houseplants (she grows over 200 in her home). That passion for gardening indoors led to her books, The Indestructible Houseplant (Timber Press, 2015), The Unexpected Houseplant (Timber Press, 2012) and The New Terrarium (Clarkson Potter/Publishers, 2009). Most recently, a new title was added to her book publications. Gold Medal award winning The Garden in Every Sense and Season (Timber Press, 2018) describes how your garden can kindle the senses on all layers to become more meaningful. These newest publications are added to more than a dozen titles that Tovah has authored including Tasha Tudor’s Garden (Houghton Mifflin, 1994). 1

Dr. Spencer's ongoing research focuses on the development of pre-Columbian complex societies in Mexico and Venezuela. He will be joined by AMNH Research Associate Elsa Redmond, his wife, with whom he has recently excavated the well-preserved remains of an ancient Zapotec palace dating to 300-100 BCE, one of the earliest palaces ever found by archaeologists in Mesoamerica. In 2014, Dr. Spencer and Dr. Redmond have both recently been elected as members of the National Academy of Sciences. John Hay Estate at The Fells Summer Speaker Series “Archaeology and The Fells” Wednesday, August 4, 11:00am-2:00pm A Presentation by Dr. Charles Spencer, Curator and archaeologist at the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) in New York City, and Dr. Robert Goodby, NH Humanities Expert and Professor of Anthropology at Franklin Pierce University of their ongoing research in archaeology. This program will use the coincidence of place to address the development of archaeology over the last century, by contrasting Clarence Hay’s time and interests with those of current archaeologists. Spencer will cover why early archaeologists, like Clarence Hay of The Fells, found the past of the Maya so worthy of attention. He will also expand on Hay’s contributions to the American Museum of Natural History. Goodby will focus specifically on the archaeology and Abenaki history of the Lake Sunapee area, and how that illustrates some of the larger themes of the session. The theme of social equity in the field of archaeology will be central to the program, as the presenters lead us through the work of early archaeologists with photographs and records. We will be paying particular attention to how small-scale societies of hunter-gatherer or tribal peoples like the Abenaki were not thought to be worthy of serious attention by early archaeologists, a situation that continues to this day. We hope the bulk of this program is a conversation among the presenters and audience about local Native history, class and race, and social equity. This event was made possible with support from New Hampshire Humanities, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Humanities. This event is free and open to the public. Summer Concert with Deep Blue C Sunday, August 15, 5:00-7:00pm A studio orchestra is made up of woodwinds, brass, percussion and strings as in a symphony orchestra. It also includes a rhythm section of guitar, bass guitar, keyboards and drum set as in a jazz combo or show orchestra. It often includes vocalists as well. Traditionally studio orchestras were assembled by large recording houses (MGM) or in the film industry to enhance the effect of a movie (film scoring) and to extract the most poignant details in the composer’s music. “Doc” Vose followed his dream to spread this musical excitement and his deep love and respect for the musical contributions of composer Burt Bacharach and lyricist Hal David by assembling his own Deep Blue “C” Studio Orchestra, 17 members including vocals. The DB “C” concerts are elegant and classy. You will find our concerts to be unique and memorable, ingredients that are always present. John Hay Estate at The Fells Summer Speaker Series Mystery Author, Burt Solomon Wednesday, August 25, 11:00am-1:00pm Author Burt Solomon writes, “In both of my historical mysteries—it’ll be a trilogy—I’ve used John Hay as my detective (and alter ego). I didn’t choose him; he chose me.” Mr. Solomon will talk about how he turned a fascinating historical figure into a quasi-fictional character. What did he keep; what did he add; and why? John Hay was an accomplished, charming, and complicated man—“a fallible, engaging character,” as a reviewer put it—Hay is a marvelous vehicle for viewing the tumult of American history from Lincoln to Theodore Roosevelt. Join us for this delightful presentation followed by conversation with Mr. Solomon, who will take questions and comments. Books will be available and the author is willing to sign them. Meets at the Pavilion. We encourage you to please bring your own lunch to enjoy during the presentation. Members: $25, nonmembers: $35. Advanced Registration Required as space is limited.
