Community Event or Initiative Award Gladstone Hospital Auxiliary Assn Inc The Gladstone Hospital Auxiliary has been working in the Gladstone community raising funds for the Gladstone Hospital since 1958. In that time, they have worked within the hospital environment with the staff assisting in doing non clinical, but highly time consuming jobs that take front line staff away from their roles. They have also been working within the community, raising funds to purchase essential equipment that is used here in Gladstone. Since 2011, the Auxiliary has purchased equipment for the hospital valued in excess of $212,669. Gladstone Girl Guides Girl Guides aim to promote girl led activities during their meetings, encouraging young girls aged 12 years and older into mentor and leadership roles amongst their peers. The Gladstone Girl Guides continued during COVID via zoom, making items and donating them to wildlife rescue. They are currently participating in the Stepping Stones Habitat Program where girls will be making habitats for birds, possums and other animals. Page 8 Gladstone Regional Council
Community Volunteer Award Betty Bridge For almost 10 years, Betty has been the cat coordinator for the RSPCA and more recently the Gladstone Animal Rescue Group. During this time, she has established a purpose built cat shelter on her property and opened her home to many neglected cats. In addition to caring for up to 90 cats at once, Betty also oversees the volunteers at the shelter. Bobby Pailthorpe Bobby has been a volunteer since leaving school over 50 years ago. Bobby supports our community by offering his services to speak and announce at events, cleaning up after community activities and by supporting Gladstone News with the delivery of their fortnightly corflutes around the region. Jocelyn Gibson Jo is the Secretary for the Gladstone Athletics Club. She is responsible for all legal requirements such as Blue Cards, Coaches certificates, COVID safety training, Health & Safety, collaborations with all of the clubs' stakeholders and general administrative duties. Jo does an amazing job in this role, on top of her part time job and full time role as Mum of four. She volunteers her time to the club selflessly. Australia Day 2021 Awards Presentation Page 9
Community Volunteer Award Jodi Jones Jodi volunteers a large amount of time to local wildlife and community volunteer initiatives. During her involvement across many years Jodi, has played a variety of roles at Gladstone Wildlife but most recently has been the Training and Education coordinator and the secretary. She has been a senior rescuer, specialist and carer for approximately 15 years. Mandy Hampton Mandy is well known throughout Australia for her courageous acts and loyalty. In addition to supporting Queensland Fire and Emergency Services as a volunteer, Mandy is also a member of the State Emergency Service and balances her time between Queensland Police Service & Queensland Ambulance Service as a volunteer. Mandy has shown great progression in her various roles and displays personal drive and integrity. She has been nominated for various Regional and QLD awards. Michael Wallace Michael has displayed outstanding leadership in regard to gaining multiple grants, project managing and bringing to fruition a major building program. He has made use of a difficult year where there were no functions. This has added major improvements to the infrastructure of the Mt Larcom Show grounds. Page 10 Gladstone Regional Council
Community Volunteer Award Molly Black Molly is a Gladstone Suns AFL Club Under 7.5’s and Auskick Coach. She is a current Year 12 Student who, whilst playing AFL herself, also took on the role of coaching. Her goal is to turn all of her young Auskickers and under 7.5’s into superstars. Instead of just coaching between her hour of training, she always arrived early for the parents drop off, and always stayed late to have private conversations' with the kids and parents. Shane Gibson Shane is the president of the Gladstone Athletics Club. He puts in tireless hours for the club, in addition to his full-time job. Shane is often doing things for the club during the week including community and stakeholder collaboration, seeking sponsorship, adhering to any sponsorship commitments, updating club members, and assisting with organising training. Everything Shane does for the club is because the athletes/members are his priority. Gladstone Animal Rescue Group The group takes in unwanted, unloved and neglected cats and dogs. The majority of these are from our local pound. They provide free desexing programs for people who are unable to afford to get their pets de-sexed. They offer $50 desexing for cats for pensioners and concession card holders. Since inception two years ago, the group has 84 volunteers and has found forever homes for over 704 cats and dogs. They have also assisted over 291 lower income and concession holders to desex their animals at a greatly reduced rate and 273 in the half price desexing programs run at various times of year. Young Sportsperson Award Nicholas Crane Nick is an all-round sports star as well as an inspirational role model for others. He performs at the highest level in many sports such as tennis, volleyball, touch football & athletics. This year, Nick made the Queensland team for Tennis. This is something that has not been done in Gladstone for a number of years and is a sensational achievement at only 16 years old. Nick played and beat players' many years older than him to make the team. Casey Randall Casey has been playing Junior Golf for many years, working her way up from three holes and currently playing 13 holes. Over the years, Casey has embraced the challenges that come with playing a difficult sport and has been working hard to overcome her fears of public speaking by stepping up to be a Junior Golf co-captain for 2020. Casey dedicates many hours to ensure the other juniors can appreciate the game and enjoy great events at BITS. She is co junior coordinator on the BITS committee. Kane Martin Kane has been involved in Surf Lifesaving for eight years. He is nominated for his outstanding performance in many facets of life saving at a State and National level. He was the first member in over a decade to be selected in the state team. Page 12 Gladstone Regional Council
Sports Official Award Deborah Creighton Deb is currently in the role of Administrator of the Gladstone and District Hockey Association. She has been in this particular role for several years, but has also done a lot of work in other areas, like coaching, managing rep teams, running/helping run the canteen, and many other things. Deb was also this year awarded a Qld Hockey Community Award for her outstanding contribution to the positive culture of hockey. Sandra Gooderham Sandra has spent many years dedicating her time and effort to the juniors of BITS junior golfers. Sandra stepped up this year to fill the role as Secretary as well as the hours she spends as Treasurer. She has been a great role model to all juniors and parents ensuring the right etiquette is upheld and encourages many of our juniors to improve their skills and motivation to travel to away games. Sandra has made a major contribution towards the BITS junior club being named CQ junior golf club of 2020. Arts & Culture Award Robyn Addison Robyn is the current vocal coach for the Community Musical, Legally Blonde - The Musical and was the vocal coach for the 2020 Combined Schools Musical Wizard of Oz - amazingly getting more than 80 students to sing in 7 part harmony. Robyn has shown great commitment to musicals being involved in the orchestra pit for community and combined schools musicals for over 15 years. Robyn is a talented musician on many instruments including flute, piccolo, trombone and oboe as well as being a talented singer. There are many in our community whose musical lives are enriched from their interactions with Robyn. Australia Day 2021 Awards Presentation Page 13
Citizen of the Year Evan Thomas Evan is a dedicated social worker and has been working in the Gladstone Region for six years. He goes above and beyond to ensure the best outcomes for his clients. He believes in respect, empathy, compassion and that each of his clients, has the potential to lead a positive life. He is easily accessible to all his clients. He is now in the process of establishing community groups to encourage his clients to lead active lifestyles. Amber Rodgers Amber has been president of the volunteer organisation DCTC for approximately five years. She is knowledgeable, capable, caring and hard working. She goes above and beyond what anyone would expect a volunteer president to do, putting in many hours a week. Amber is also a driving force behind the 1770 Festival and the Agnes Blues, Roots and Rock Festival. Alana (Tink) McMullen Alana is nominated for her contribution to our community based on her advocacy efforts for people with disabilities, the opportunities she offers those with a disability, and her wishes granted to people with terminal and long-term illness. Alana manages all of this while coping with a fear of social interaction due to her own Asperger’s diagnosis. She is the Owner/Founder of Tinks Wish List, connecting wish recipients with donors in their community to grant the wish of those with terminal or long-term illness. Citizen of the Year Liz Cunningham Liz has committed her time to the community for many years across a variety of community groups including Calliope Rotary Club, Gladstone Central Committee of the Aging, Boyne Tannum Artscape Committee, Rio Tinto here for Gladstone, Qld Retired Police - Gladstone Branch, National Serviceman’s Association - Gladstone Branch, Gladstone Cancer Council - Relay for Life, Port Curtis Historical Society, Gladstone Chaplaincy. It is this dedication to multiple groups and her ability to make a great cake which have found her nominated. Judith Crabtree Judith and her team of volunteers make funeral sets for babies. Gladstone Angel Babies has been set up to support families who have lost a child. They cater for babies from 16 weeks up to 13 months of age. From donated wedding and formal gowns, little garments are created and given free of charge to families, funeral homes and hospitals. Judith established Gladstone Angel Babies in February 2017 and has facilitated the creation of thousands of beautiful garments, supporting many families during such a difficult time.
