Her career began early at age 16, where she learned the value of teamwork working at the local MacDonald’s. Graduating in 1980 with a joint Accounting and Business Diploma, Nancy went on to positions in Mall Management/ Promotion with Champlain Place/ Tritor Developments, as a Paralegal with Tyerman and Egan Law Offices, and as the Executive Assistant to the President and Corporate Secretary of Atlantic Trust Company of Canada/ Prenor Trust. Having previously worked in the fields of consumerism, law, and banking, Nancy feels she finally made a difference in the world through the good works of AST grads. Favourite memories are a student revealing that they all called her “Auntie Nancy”, drinking Janet Templeton’s famous hot chocolate while watching tobogganers sailing down the back hill on cafeteria trays, and singing carols with everyone at the AST Christmas party, which always set the tone for the wonderful Christmas Break to follow. Nancy keeps busy now with gardening, painting and rock-hounding and still loves to whistle. 15

Atlantic School of Theology The story of Atlantic School of Theology is a story of community and collaboration: a vision of a new university where students are prepared to meet the theological and ethical challenges of today’s world. AST began with three theology schools - University of King’s College divinity faculty (Anglican Church of Canada), Holy Heart Theological Seminary (The Roman Catholic Episcopal Corporation of Halifax) and Pine Hill Divinity Hall (United Church of Canada). For many years they had been distinct, but by the late 1960s, students were sharing both classes and faculty, and representatives of these denominations were inspired to build on this collaboration. In March 1971, the three schools’ representatives signed Articles of Agreement to create one ecumenical theological school. This would be the first time in Canada that three denominations had come together for such an institution. That fall, Atlantic School of Theology welcomed its first students. Nearly five decades later, AST is one of only two fully ecumenical universities in the world. AST has a faculty and programs that encourage excellence in educational achievement and shape community leaders who draw on their theological and ethical knowledge and skills to help build a better world. Accredited by the Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada, AST offers a Master of Divinity degree, a Graduate Certificate in Theological Studies, and (in partnership with Saint Mary’s University) a Master of Arts (Theology and Religious Studies) degree. Among our non-degree offerings are a Certificate in Theological Studies, a Diploma in Missional Leadership, a Diploma in the New Evangelization, and many Continuing Education programs. There is a wide range of online and on campus learning opportunities. Programming for our new Leadership Learning initiative was launched in 2020 to expand AST’s mission to shape faithful and effective leaders. The initiative boasts a broad range of timely and innovative programs for leaders in business, the community and the church who wish to gain more self-awareness and take tangible action to create a more inclusive, just and compassionate world. To date, offerings have included an online leaders’ series, the Black Women in Leadership forum, one-time educational sessions and an online event featuring Belarus democratic leader, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, who personifies values-based leadership and is making significant positive change in our world. We are excited by the potential of this initiative, which is gaining traction and recognition regionally, nationally and internationally. The story of AST is a story of committed, faithful, transformative service to the church, the communities served by our graduates, and the wider world. On our campus beside the shoreline of the Atlantic Ocean and through internet based learning, AST’s leaders of today and tomorrow continue to gain the knowledge and skills they need to change and influence our world for the better.
