M ES SA GE FR O M TH E C O U N TY EX EC U TI VE Have you seen the 2020 Census numbers? After six decades of losing population, we are growing again. There are a number of factors to which we can attribute our growth, but quality of life is a big part of our success. And the Allegheny County Parks System is an integral part of that – not just for our county, but also the region. Our parks continue to serve as a place where residents and visitors alike can get out, enjoy the outdoors and nature, and just be. For over 90 years, the parks have served as the “people’s country clubs,” providing real health and environmental benefits to users. The system, first envisioned by Commissioner Edward V. Babcock, now encompasses nine separate and unique parks, and over 12,000 acres of land. Rather than passive parks, we have worked hard over the last few decades to expand the amenities and programming available in them, making them an important factor in our county’s livability. And our parks remain open to everyone, no matter their age, ability or economic status. They’ve become part of our identity. I often hear from residents about “their” park and can hear the pride they have in it as new programs and features are being developed and offered. It makes me extremely proud to know that our commitment to our parks is valued by residents and visitors alike. As we approach the fall season, it provides the perfect opportunity to get outdoors and increase our physical activity without the worries and risk that the high temperatures of summer may bring. Whether you’re heading to the park to bike, walk, hike or any of the programs that we offer, enjoy it all surrounded by the beautiful colors that fall produces. This season, we’re hosting car cruises, a performance of The Tragedy of Hamlet, jazz, our ever-popular Hay Day, campfire ghost stories and spooky drive-in movies. We’re also excited to have Punkin’ Chunkin’ return and to offer Trunk or Treat along with the car cruises. Our programming is becoming more and more popular, and isn’t a secret any longer - so register in advance at www.alleghenycounty.us/parkprograms to reserve your spot today. No matter which park you consider to be “yours,” I hope that you’ll take the opportunity to spend time in it and share your love of the park with friends and family alike. I’m immensely proud of the continued investment that we have made in our parks, and the resulting quality of life, and hope that you have that same experience the more time that you spend in them.

Nature Programming & Outdoors Park Trails Whether you are a hiker, biker, runner or equestrian, there is something for everyone in the Allegheny County Park trail system. With nearly 200 miles of trails, the possibilities are endless for outdoor recreation. Looking to catch some spectacular views this fall? Take a trip to Harrison Hills Park where you can see some amazing fall foliage, and have the opportunity to see a variety of wildlife. We recommend parking at the Overlook Playground Parking Lot – at the far end of the lot you will find Rachel Carson Trail (Yellow blaze), which also follows the Red Trail. Head North along the trail and you will quickly reach the Watts Overlook with its outstanding views of the Allegheny River and the surrounding hills. From this vantage point you can see Butler, Armstrong, and Westmoreland counties! This is a great spot to look for eagles and other birds of prey soaring over the river. If you continue North on the Rachel Carson Trail (Yellow)/ Red Trail, you will be treated to several great viewpoints from the rocky bluffs along the way. If you want to head back to the parking lot you can make a loop with the Green Trail and Purple Trail (1 – 2 Miles depending on how far you would like to walk) OR if you are feeling adventurous, you can follow the Red Trail as it makes a 5-mile loop around the entire park. Along the way it passes through a variety of habitats including old fields, small ponds, wetlands and open forests. Check out the Trails App to help you navigate the trail system in Harrison Hills Park or any of the 9 Allegheny County Parks.
