“My favorite academic experience at Queens was my opportunity to be on the student panel during our discussion with Doris Kearns Goodwin. This experience was part of a diverse liberal arts curriculum that helped me learn how to approach a problem with multiple perspectives.” – Siobahn Petracca ’21, History
S ince 1988, The Learning Society has brought leading thinkers and doers to our doorstep, broadening our worldview through face-to-face, unfiltered dialogue. Thanks to our members’ commitment and generosity, the semiannual series extends far beyond the auditorium. The guest lecturer’s impact at the podium is magnified by weeks of student engagement and immersion in the speaker’s topic, viewpoint and background. Upon arrival to Charlotte, the speaker engages first with Queens’ students in an on-campus discussion prior to the public, community event. The Learning Society is a tremendous asset to the Charlotte region at a time when community dialogue is essential. It serves as a catalyst for thought-provoking conversations and bringing together diverse audiences. It also engages students in relevant topics, further enhancing the academic experience and broadening perspectives. Such a forum is essential to sparking new ideas and finding shared solutions. I’ve been active with Queens University’s programing for several years and continue to be impressed by the quality and richness of the experience. - Jennifer DeWitt, 2021-22 Executive Committee Chair, The Learning Society of Queens

An Evening with DR. LISA GENOVA Neuroscientist and #1 International and New York Times bestselling Author of Still Alice and Remember: The Science of Memory and the Art of Forgetting WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 20, 2021 LIVE AT SANDRA LEVINE THEATRE AT SARAH GAMBRELL CENTER FOR THE ARTS Dr. Lisa Genova is a Harvard University-educated neuroscientist and author of the novel Still Alice, about a Harvard University professor who suffers early onset Alzheimer's disease. The book was adapted into a movie starring Julianne Moore. Her first work of nonfiction, REMEMBER: The Science of Memory and the Art of Forgetting, published March 2021, was an instant New York Times bestseller, and is a fascinating exploration of the intricacies of how we remember, why we forget, and what we can do to protect our memories. As a culture, we revere intellect and memory, and we tend to vilify forgetting. We cast Forgetting as the bad guy in the epic battle against everyone’s favorite hero, Remembering. But our memory system isn’t a war between good and evil. Most of what we forget every day is actually 100% normal. Our brains aren’t designed to remember people’s names, to do something later, or to catalog everything we encounter. These imperfections are simply the factory settings. But we tend to lay a lot of fear, shame, and stress on ourselves every time we forget to take out the trash, where we put our phones, or the name of a movie a friend recommended, and we're unfairly punishing ourselves here. Sharing strategies and tips for improving and protecting memory, Dr. Genova helps organizations and their employees become more efficient and productive as they gain insight into how memory works. She discusses all aspects of the mind - highlighting the correlation between stress, productivity, and performance as we aim to navigate a post-COVID world and succeed in new hybrid work environments. In her presentation she will help us answer the question: How can we improve the productivity and performance of our minds and our people? Presented to the Community by: Wells Fargo Center for Community Engagement
A Conversation with MARK HYMAN Moderated by Carla Hall Best-Selling Author of "Food Fix: How to Save Our Health, Our Economy, Our Communities, and Our Planet-One Bite at a Time" & Healthcare Expert WEDNESDAY, APRIL 20, 2022 LIVE AT THE BELK THEATER AT BLUMENTHAL PERFORMING ARTS CENTER Dr. Mark Hyman is an internationally recognized leader, speaker, educator, and advocate in the field of Functional Medicine. He believes what we do to our bodies, we do to the planet; and what we do to the planet, we do to our bodies. Hyman shares how what we eat has tremendous implications not just for our waistlines, but also for the planet, society, and the global economy. Dr. Hyman has turned his passion for Functional Medicine, real food, nutrition, and wellness into activism, working to change our food system on a global scale. He is the Head of Strategy and Innovation of the Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine, a thirteen-time New York Times bestselling author and host of one of the leading health podcasts, The Doctor’s Farmacy. Dr. Hyman will be joined by “Top Chef” and cookbook author Carla Hall. Carla spent 7 years co-hosting ABC’s Emmy award winning, popular lifestyle series “The Chew”, and she currently brightens the mornings of millions as a Culinary Contributor to “Good Morning America”. Her latest cookbook, Carla Hall’s Soul Food: Everyday and Celebration, was published in 2018, landing on annual "Best Cookbook" lists across the country and receiving an NAACP Image Awards nomination. She has two previous cookbooks - Carla’s Comfort Food: Favorite Dishes from Around the World and Cooking with Love: Comfort Food That Hugs You.
Connected to Student Learning Two longstanding Queens traditions - The Common Read and the Learning Society – will once again join together around Mark Hyman’s visit. His book Food Fix: How to Save Our Health, Our Economy, Our Communities, and Our Planet – One Bite at a Time is this year’s university-wide Common Read. In various classes such as those in the learning communities of the General Education Program, seminars in the Academic Honors Program and major specific courses, students will be challenged to question and evaluate the science, health implications, politics, and personal decisions associated with the food they eat. Students will utilize an interdisciplinary approach as they hone their critical thinking, information literacy, and communication skills to address one of the major global challenges of our time. Everybody eats, plain and simple. The world is facing a food crisis driven by unsustainable production, climate change, poor public policy, social unrest, and economic instability due to global events such as the recent COVID pandemic. Access to healthy food is a problem facing all 7.8 billion people on this planet. Mark Hyman is one of many using their platform to raise the alarm around the local, national and global challenges facing our food system. Food Fix will challenge Queens students and community to critically evaluate and rethink their decisions, and the unintended consequences that come with those decisions, of a key necessity, the food they eat. Greg Pillar, PhD, Assistant Provost for University Programs, Professor of Environmental Science & Chemistry Students measure maximal oxygen consumption as an outcome measure for a study on high intensity interval training and berry/fruit ingestion.
2021-2022 STUDENT EXPERIENCE. Beyond the Lectures. Through the generosity of the Learning Society members, every undergraduate student is provided a copy of the Common Read book. Across campus, students and faculty engage in critical analysis, robust dialogue, and further exploration of the issues at the core of each year’s book. The student-led discussion with our Learning Society speaker has become a signature learning experience for our students. Sarah Fatherly, Ph.D., Provost & Vice President for Academic Affairs
“Participating in the student discussion with Michelle Alexander was an experience that allowed me to not only become more aware of social issues surrounding the criminal justice system, but also learn from others in the community about how I can become a better citizen.” – Sami Tubolino ’20, Biology Major, Psychology Minor “The 2019 James Comey event showed me that leadership is more than a buzz word, more than distinct types. Cultivating ethical leadership is a vital challenge for today’s leaders across the globe. By participating in such an inspiring event and engaging in my leadership classes, l feel better equipped to lead ethically when I finish my MBA at Queens.” – Catherine Nason MBA ’20, pictured second from left above
