“My favorite
                  academic
                 experience at
             Queens was my
           opportunity to be on
          the student panel during
        our discussion with Doris
       Kearns Goodwin. This
     experience was part of a
    diverse liberal arts curriculum
that helped me learn how to
 approach a problem with multiple
perspectives.”

ince 1988, The Learning Society has brought
leading thinkers and doers to our doorstep,
broadening our worldview through face-to-face,
unfiltered dialogue. Thanks to our members’
commitment and generosity, the semiannual series
extends far beyond the auditorium. The guest
lecturer’s impact at the podium is magnified by
weeks of student engagement and immersion in the
speaker’s topic, viewpoint and background. Upon
arrival to Charlotte, the speaker engages first with
Queens’ students in an on-campus discussion prior
to the public, community event.

The Learning Society is a tremendous asset
to the Charlotte region at a time when
community dialogue is essential. It serves as a
                    catalyst for thought-provoking conversations
                    and bringing together diverse audiences.
It also engages students in relevant topics,
                    further enhancing the academic experience
and broadening perspectives. Such a forum
is essential to sparking new ideas and finding
shared solutions. I’ve been active with Queens
University’s programing for several years and
continue to be impressed by the quality and
                    richness of the experience.

Frank Abagnale is one of the world’s most respected authorities on forgery,
embezzlement, and secure documents. Mr. Abagnale’s rare blend of knowledge
and expertise began more than 50 years ago when he was known as one of the
world’s most famous con men. His riveting story provided the inspiration for
Steven Spielberg’s film, Catch Me If You Can, starring Leonardo DiCaprio as
Abagnale and Tom Hanks as the FBI agent fast on his heels.

For over 40 years Frank Abagnale has worked with, advised, and consulted with
hundreds of financial institutions, corporations and government agencies around
the world. Abagnale’s unique expertise and first-hand experience have made his
contributions to the world of cyber security immeasurable. The FBI and more
than 14,000 financial institutions, corporations and government agencies around
the world utilize Abagnale’s fraud prevention programs.

Sharing stories from his life and his book, Scam Me If You Can: Simple Strategies
to Outsmart Today’s Ripoff Artists, Abagnale will take us behind the scenes to
show us how simple strategies can thwart today’s cyber criminals. With vivid
examples, Abagnale reveals how identity thieves work, why passwords aren’t
keeping you safe, and why safeguarding yourself is particularly important today.
Audiences praise his entertaining and informative sessions brimming with
practical takeaways for attendees wanting to better protect themselves and
their organizations from ever-increasing fraud.

All businesses, no matter the size, are realizing the importance of cybersecurity and
mitigating risks that can lead to data leaks or breaches. As reliance on technology
continues to increase and cybercriminals become increasingly sophisticated,
organizations need qualified cybersecurity leaders to manage and protect their
information infrastructure. To answer this increase in demand, the Queens McColl
School of Business recently launched a graduate Certificate in Cybersecurity
Management. Through a partnership with the University of Dallas Gupta School
of Business, Queens students learn from highly qualified cybersecurity professors
in a nationally recognized program. Since 2003, the University of Dallas has
been designated as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense
Education by the National Security Agency and Department of Homeland Security.
Throughout their classes, students study data protection, compliance and legal
issues, operational cybersecurity management, and network security.

In a world filled with scams, fraud and hacks,
it is a rare opportunity to learn from an insider.
Frank Abagnale, a one-time con artist and
professional imposter, has devoted the last
four decades of his life to making the world a
better place through education and awareness.
Learning Society members and the greater
Queens University community are fortunate to
have the opportunity to learn from Mr. Abagnale
on how to stay safe in our modern society.

Dr. Mark Hyman is an internationally recognized leader, speaker,
educator, and advocate in the field of Functional Medicine. He believes
what we do to our bodies, we do to the planet; and what we do to
the planet, we do to our bodies. Hyman shares how what we eat has
tremendous implications not just for our waistlines, but also for the
planet, society, and the global economy.

Dr. Hyman has turned his passion for Functional Medicine, real food,
nutrition, and wellness into activism, working to change our food system on
a global scale. He is the Head of Strategy and Innovation of the Cleveland
Clinic Center for Functional Medicine, a thirteen-time New York Times
bestselling author and host of one of the leading health podcasts, The
Doctor’s Farmacy.

Dr. Hyman will be joined by “Top Chef” and cookbook author Carla Hall.
Carla spent 7 years co-hosting ABC’s Emmy award winning, popular lifestyle
series “The Chew”, and she currently brightens the mornings of millions as
a Culinary Contributor to “Good Morning America”. Her latest cookbook,
Carla Hall’s Soul Food: Everyday and Celebration, was published in 2018,
landing on annual "Best Cookbook" lists across the country and receiving an
NAACP Image Awards nomination. She has two previous cookbooks - Carla’s
Comfort Food: Favorite Dishes from Around the World and Cooking with
Love: Comfort Food That Hugs You.

Two longstanding Queens traditions - The Common Read and the Learning
Society – will once again join together around Mark Hyman’s visit. His book Food
Fix: How to Save Our Health, Our Economy, Our Communities, and Our Planet
– One Bite at a Time is this year’s university-wide Common Read. In various
classes such as those in the learning communities of the General Education
Program, seminars in the Academic Honors Program and major specific courses,
students will be challenged to question and evaluate the science, health
implications, politics, and personal decisions associated with the food they eat.
Students will utilize an interdisciplinary approach as they hone their critical
thinking, information literacy, and communication skills to address one of the
major global challenges of our time.

Everybody eats, plain and simple. The world is facing
a food crisis driven by unsustainable production,
climate change, poor public policy, social unrest,
and economic instability due to global events such
as the recent COVID pandemic. Access to healthy
food is a problem facing all 7.8 billion people on
this planet. Mark Hyman is one of many using their
platform to raise the alarm around the local, national
and global challenges facing our food system. Food
Fix will challenge Queens students and community
to critically evaluate and rethink their decisions, and
the unintended consequences that come with those
decisions, of a key necessity, the food they eat.

2021-2022 STUDENT EXPERIENCE.
Beyond the Lectures.

Through the generosity of the Learning Society
members, every undergraduate student is provided
a copy of the Common Read book. Across campus,
students and faculty engage in critical analysis, robust
dialogue, and further exploration of the issues at the core
of each year’s book. The student-led discussion with
our Learning Society speaker has become a signature
        learning experience for our students.

                              Sarah Fatherly, Ph.D.,
                              Provost & Vice President for
                              Academic Affairs
“Participating in the student discussion with Michelle Alexander
was an experience that allowed me to not only become more
aware of social issues surrounding the criminal justice system,
but also learn from others in the community about how I can
                                        become a better citizen.”

                                  Biology Major, Psychology Minor

                      “The 2019 James Comey event
showed me that leadership is more
than a buzz word, more than distinct
types. Cultivating ethical leadership is a
vital challenge for today’s leaders across
the globe. By participating in such an
inspiring event and engaging in my leadership
classes, l feel better equipped to lead ethically
when I finish my MBA at Queens.”
