Patient and Visitor Guide About John Hunter Hospital John Hunter Hospital is a tertiary referral, teaching hospital and a major referral centre for Hunter New England Local Health District. With one of the busiest emergency departments in the state, we provide a range of medical and surgical services to a population of more than 800,000 people. John Hunter Hospital is the only trauma centre in NSW outside of Sydney. We provide primary and tertiary trauma services to the people of the Hunter Valley and tertiary trauma services to the people of the Central Coast, New England, and Mid North Coast regions of New South Wales. With support from the Westpac Rescue Helicopter and NSW Ambulance, the Hospital provides a retrieval service for critically ill patients from the Hunter and North Coast.
