SHS Playschool Handbook 2021-2022 Updated 8/16/2021 Welcome to Society Hill Synagogue Playschool Playschool is a welcoming, inclusive space for children that embraces diversity in religion, ethnicity, race, and family structure. Our philosophy is child-centered and play-based. We believe that children learn through play in a safe and nurturing environment. We respect children as individuals and respond to their needs with compassion and dedication. Through planning and observation, our teachers and environment provide stimulating experiences designed to enrich the whole child, including social, emotional, physical, cognitive, and creative development. We relish the opportunities for children to grow, socialize, and flourish in our indoor and outdoor spaces throughout the Paula Kline Learning Center, our historic synagogue building, and the natural environment in the beautiful Society Hill setting. This handbook provides essential information and an overview of our school-year program. Our staff and I look forward to working with your child(ren) and getting to know your family as we make wonderful new memories at Playschool! Please contact me any time at 215-922-6590 x4 or lilli@societyhillsynagogue.org. Lilli Klotz Foster Assistant Director of Education for Playschool 2

General Guidelines • Families are required to drop off and pick up their children within their class’ designated timeframe. Children may not be admitted outside of their designated drop-off timeframe without prior notice to the lead teacher and Lilli at least 24 hours in advance. • If arriving at school by car and temporarily parking in Lawrence Court, please help us keep our good relations with our neighbors by being mindful of the amount of time and where you parked. • Daily health screenings and temperature checks are conducted in person outdoors at drop-off. • Parents/caregivers are required to wear a mask while waiting to drop off or pick up their child. • Parents/caregivers may not enter the school until we can resume that in a healthy and safe way. • Support specialists (e.g., occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech language pathologists) may enter the school to work with our students if they are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and have received prior permission to enter from Lilli. • Toys from home are prohibited, as it can be difficult for young children to share a treasured object and very difficult if it is lost or broken. • We will only release a child to individuals listed on the child’s Emergency Contact Form or to those with written parental permission from the child’s parent(s). When making a change to your list of people authorized to pick up your child, please contact Lilli and your child’s lead teacher and provide the updated names and cell numbers. • Staff may request photo identification from anyone unfamiliar to them who is picking up a child. • If your child is not picked up by their scheduled pick-up time, you will be responsible for paying for the additional block of time (e.g., Afternoon Arts or Extended Care), and if your child is not picked up by 6:00 pm, you will be responsible for paying $25.00/hour, with a $25.00 minimum for any part of the hour past 6:00 pm. 6
SHS Playschool Handbook 2021-2022 Updated 8/16/2021 Curriculum In every class, lessons are organized around thematic units averaging one month in duration. Thematic units are not content driven lessons, but rather “jumping-off points” for play-based, child-led, inquisitive, and emergent learning. They begin with an introductory activity or a circle time discussion establishing “what do we know, and what do we want to know.” During each of these theme studies, teachers develop and present related activities, including dramatic play, open- ended and collaborative or individual art projects, science experiments, and explorations of related literature and numeracy in ways that generally tie to or stem from the topic at hand. They use children’s interests as the foundation for developing language and vocabulary around the things that children notice, observe, and wonder about. An example could be counting and charting different types of flowers and their petals using both child- supplied descriptors and scientific names, or mixing common kitchen ingredients like soap, flour, oil, and water and describing what the children see and how it feels. Jewish values are interwoven organically through each theme, directly supporting the social-emotional growth and empathy that are an integral part of what we teach at Playschool and what we believe is central to early childhood education. Each Jewish holiday is a concrete, fun way for children in our school – who come from a wide variety of backgrounds – to experience Jewish customs, festivities, and to relate the values taught to the rituals and actions associated with each occasion. Every Friday morning, we gather to celebrate Shabbat (the Jewish Sabbath, which is from sunset on Friday to sunset on Saturday) through singing, dancing, and enjoying delicious challah bread. Music is a regular part of each class, with our multi-talented teachers leading the children in song and instrument exploration. From ukuleles and maracas to banjos and bells, students learn about sound and rhythm and develop their own dance moves. Children enjoy outdoor play each day, including push cars and tricycles, games and chalk art, and building with weatherproof wooden blocks and planks in our terrace grounds and in Lawrence Court. Classes visit neighborhood green spaces, including Washington Square, Independence Park, and the nearby Rose Garden. In the event of inclement weather or extreme temperatures, we have a wide assortment of indoor gross motor equipment and activities, including balance beams, “river rocks,” and climbers that we use in our large Social Hall. Our Parent of the Week program provides an opportunity for parents and/or other caregivers to be in the classroom with their child and see what their child’s day is like, to get to know their child’s friends, and to provide a healthy snack for the class. The “Parent of the Week” schedule often coincides with children’s birthdays. In accordance with our health and safety policy, the format for “Parent of the Week” may look different this year. This may include Zoom read alouds, pre-recorded video messages, outdoor visits, and other ways of bridging home and school. 7
SHS Playschool Handbook 2021-2022 Updated 8/16/2021 Children in our Comets, Sun, and Moon classes do not need to be potty trained, but they are encouraged to develop this skill as they observe classmates moving toward this goal. Many of our students are potty-trained by the end of their year in the Sun Class, and nearly all by the time they have completed the Moon Class. Toileting at school is encouraged using positive reinforcement, including verbal praise and stickers, and by fostering caring, trusting relationships between students, their parents, and their teachers. When your child is beginning to potty train, we ask that you provide a pull- up type diaper. This facilitates children’s growth and development by helping them get to the toilet quickly and more independently. Our youngest students who stay for Afternoon Arts – Comets, Sun, and some Moon Class students – take a daily nap after lunch, starting at 12:30 pm or 12:45 pm, for one to two hours. Older children whose need for a nap may be waning can participate in a shorter period of decreased stimulation to rest their bodies and minds before joining early afternoon projects and play. Our Meteors and Stars class students do not nap at school. Please speak with your child’s teachers about their sleep habits at home and their preferred daily schedule. Our youngest Playschoolers build communication skills, learn how to share and socialize with other children, how to follow instructions and integrate with a group, and explore self-expression through play, art, music, and movement. Sensory play, outdoor exploration, high quality toys, and loose parts and found objects offer engaging opportunities for fine and gross motor skill development. Students in our 3-4 year old classes build on their natural curiosity as they engage in play-based activities designed to strengthen their foundation skills in literacy, mathematics, and science. Children gain confidence with letters and numbers, learn to identify and write their names, recognize and identify shapes, and begin to work collaboratively and independently to solve problems. Stories and projects centered around their thematic topics grow more in depth and breadth, following children’s interests and curiosities. The pre-kindergarten class incorporates the spirit of joyful, Jewish, play-based education while giving children the strong foundational skills they need to continue into kindergarten. Children in this group spend 10-15 minutes per morning working individually on activities that promote independence, fine motor skills, and building stamina. These include working on handwriting, journaling (through writing and/or drawing), writing letters and numbers, and solving puzzles. The dynamic approach to learning inspires children to feel joy and a sense of accomplishment as they engage with increasingly complex topics and expand their knowledge and skills in the areas of literacy, mathematics, science, and social studies. Children take ownership of the classroom by developing rules about behavior and social interactions among their schoolmates. They also rotate through a variety of classroom jobs. 8
SHS Playschool Handbook 2021-2022 Updated 8/16/2021 Special Programming We are excited to continue our relationship with ZoomDance, which provides a high-energy blend of storytelling, dance, music, adventure, imagination, and fun to our older students with a weekly class. Skilled dance educators visit our school and work with the Moon, Meteors, and Stars classes to help children develop agility, coordination, rhythm, and balance. We look forward to resuming other field trips as soon as it is safe to do so, given the COVID-19 pandemic. Destinations include the Philadelphia Museum of Art and its Museum Looks and Picture Books series, the Philadelphia Insectarium and Butterfly Pavilion, other local museums and landmarks, and theatre productions for children. Conferences, Reports, and Feedback We encourage daily communication between teachers and children’s parents and caregivers at drop-off, regarding topics including the previous night’s sleep, appetite, health, and any upcoming events in the child’s life, such as a trip or a special visitor. Every student’s family receives two written reports each year, in December and May, coinciding with semi-annual parent-teacher conferences. Reports provide a unique narrative of each child’s journey and strengths and reference developmental milestones, including physical, cognitive, linguistic, and social- emotional benchmarks. Your child’s teacher is available year-round to discuss any ongoing goals or concerns, and we commonly partner with outside organizations and practitioners that provide therapeutic support and evaluations. As some Playschool graduates continue on to independent or magnet schools, we gladly provide records, references, and letters of recommendation for our students. Supplies to Send with Your Child(ren) Families supply the following items for their children: • 2-3 extra sets of clothing, including socks and shoes (kept at school) • 3-5 cloth masks (used masks are sent home daily for laundering) • 1 box of disposable masks • Extra diapers or pull-ups • Nap mat for children who rest at school in the afternoons (sent home weekly for laundering) • Lunch and a water bottle 9
SHS Playschool Handbook 2021-2022 Updated 8/16/2021 Please label everything, including diapers and pull-ups. You can get great labels and support our school through Mabel’s Labels. Please visit mabelslabels.com and enter “Society Hill Synagogue Playschool” in the “Organization Name” field. Thanks for your support! Food Policy Lunch Each Playschool class has lunch every day from 12:00-12:30 pm, and every child needs to come to school with a packed lunch that is dairy or “pareve” (Yiddish for “neutral” – neither dairy nor meat), such that ingredients do not contain any meat or poultry products, shellfish, or shellfish components. Food brought into school does not need to be certified kosher but does need to meet the criteria above. Cheese, yogurt, other dairy products, eggs, rice, pasta, cereal, fish (but not shellfish), salads, dairy or pareve sandwiches, fruit, and vegetables are all acceptable items to bring to school. Pizza should not have any meat toppings on it if brought for lunch. All food and drink must be sent in non-breakable plastic or metal containers. Glass containers are not allowed in children’s lunches; they could break if dropped. Please label all water bottles and food containers with your child’s name. Our staff adhere to diligent cleanliness measures while handling lunch. Children are not allowed to share food with their friends. This ensures that children with dietary allergies or restrictions will not ingest food which they may not eat. Playschool is not a nut-free site, but we plan carefully to enable all children to enjoy lunch safely, accounting for their allergies in our lunch handling and seating. Every classroom has a visual allergy guide with the photo, name, and emergency treatment for every child and staff member who has an allergy. Snack Playschool provides students with a morning snack, a snack during Afternoon Arts, and a snack during Extended Care. Our snacks include a blend of fruit, vegetables, grains, and protein-rich dairy items. If serving any fruit or vegetable that is listed on the Environmental Working Group’s “Dirty Dozen,” we use organic fruit or vegetables. Any dairy snacks we provide, such as string cheese, are also organic. Any alteration from our regularly provided snacks, including cooking projects or special treats, will be communicated to parents by teachers or Lilli at least 24 hours in advance, giving parents the chance to opt out of that for their child(ren). 10
SHS Playschool Handbook 2021-2022 Updated 8/16/2021 Special Treats and Snacks Provided by Parents Our food policy requires parents to coordinate with staff about plans for a birthday treat or other special treat sent from home at least one week in advance and to provide the name of the item and an ingredient list no fewer than 48 hours in advance of the day when the treat will be sent in to school. Teachers will email the ingredient list to all families in the class at least 24 hours before the treat is to be served so that families can choose whether to opt out for their child(ren). If a family would like to provide a snack in recognition of their child’s birthday, they are welcome to do so if it is store/bakery bought and in its original packaging. Please coordinate birthday plans with your child’s lead teacher in advance to verify the number of students attending, any allergies or dietary restrictions, and to help us adhere to our food policy. The Playschool Committee Our Playschool Committee includes Playschool parents and administrative staff. The Playschool Committee serves in an advisory role, and its mission is to bring parents and Playschool staff together to accomplish goals that will enhance our school for the benefit of the children and their families. These include increasing parent engagement in Playschool’s growth and development; staying informed and updated on Playschool operations; sharing ideas, suggestions, and feedback; helping to plan a select number of events for Playschool families; and serving as ambassadors for Playschool and supporting its outreach efforts. The Playschool Committee meets approximately once a month. If you would like to join the committee or learn more about it, please contact Lilli at lilli@societyhillsynagogue.org. Health and Safety Policy In spring 2020, Society Hill Synagogue assembled its COVID-19 Risk Mitigation and Safety Committee, consisting of local medical professionals and public health experts from the synagogue community. In consultation with this committee, and based on Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendations and Philadelphia Department of Public Health (PDPH) guidelines, we have established a comprehensive health and safety policy. Please note: this policy may be updated as COVID-19 recommendations and guidelines change. COVID-19 Illness Policy • Playschool reserves the right to require children to quarantine and/or get tested for COVID-19 after returning from domestic or international travel, including but not limited to air travel, prior to their being allowed to return to school. 11
SHS Playschool Handbook 2021-2022 Updated 8/16/2021 • The PDPH defines COVID-19-like illness as experiencing any 1 of these symptoms: o New or persistent cough o Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing o New loss of sense of smell o New loss of sense of taste o Fever (a temperature of 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or more) o Sore throat o Chills o Muscle pain o Headache o Nausea or vomiting o Diarrhea o Fatigue o Congestion or runny nose • Staff and families will conduct daily health checks of all household members before coming to school. • In addition, health screenings and contactless temperature checks will be conducted daily in person outdoors at drop-off. • A staff member/child will not be allowed to enter school if: o They develop a symptom of COVID-19-like illness before coming to school, OR o They are experiencing flushed cheeks, rapid breathing, or difficulty breathing (without recent physical activity) upon arrival at school, OR o They have been exposed to anyone with a confirmed case of COVID-19 in the past 10 days. • If a staff member/child meets any of the criteria above for not being allowed to enter school, the staff member/child’s parent(s)/caregiver must notify Lilli. The staff member/child and all of their household members – including siblings – will not be allowed to return to school until the following conditions are met: o The staff member/child has tested negative for COVID-19 and meets Playschool’s normal criteria for return after an illness (including being fever-free for 24 hours without fever- reducing medication), OR o A healthcare provider has evaluated the staff member/child and documented a reason for the symptom(s) other than COVID-19 and that the staff member/child may return to school, OR o All of the following are true for the staff member/child: § At least 10 days have passed since the onset of symptoms, AND § They have been fever-free for 24 hours without fever-reducing medication, AND § Their symptoms are improving. • If a staff member/child has been exposed to anyone with a confirmed case of COVID-19 in the past 10 days, the staff member/child’s parent(s)/caregiver must notify Lilli, and the staff member/child must remain home. The child(ren)’s family will be required to pick up the child(ren) within 1 hour of notification in such a case. • If a staff member/child has a confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19: o The staff member/child’s parent(s)/caregiver must notify Lilli immediately. o We will contact the PDPH for further guidance and notify staff and families accordingly. o Please note that there will be different requirements of staff members/children who have been exposed to the staff member/child with the confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19, who have had contact with but not an exposure to the staff member/child with the confirmed diagnosis, or who have not had any contact with the staff member/child with the confirmed diagnosis. o Staff members and families should be prepared for a variety of scenarios, including: § Leaving Playschool or picking up an ill child within 1 hour of being notified. § Quarantine for 10 days if exposed to someone with a confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19. § A class closure or school-wide closure. • A staff member/child who has a confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19 will be allowed to return to school when all of the following conditions are met: o At least 10 days have passed since the onset of symptoms, AND o They have been fever-free for 24 hours without fever-reducing medication, AND o Their symptoms are improving. Personal Protective Equipment, Sanitization, and Ventilation • All staff are fully vaccinated against COVID-19, as is required for employment at Society Hill Synagogue. • All staff are required to wear masks covering their nose and mouth. • Parents/caregivers are required to wear masks covering their nose and mouth during drop-off and pick-up. • All children age 2 and older are required to wear masks covering their nose and mouth. Please ensure that your child’s mask fits snugly. • Children need to come to school with multiple masks so that they have extra masks in case they need to change from one mask into another if a mask gets wet, sweaty, or dirty. • Staff wear gloves when in contact with any bodily fluids and when handling food or diapering. • Every classroom has a sink and a contactless hand sanitizer dispenser. Additional contactless dispensers are located throughout the synagogue. • Staff use disinfectant spray and wipes to sanitize toys, instruments, and other learning resources. 13
SHS Playschool Handbook 2021-2022 Updated 8/16/2021 • Our custodial staff sanitize bathrooms and classrooms multiple times throughout the day. • Every classroom has a HEPA-filter air purifier, multiple windows, and its own controllable HVAC system. There are additional HEPA-filter air purifiers in spaces throughout the synagogue. Non-COVID-19 Illness Policy • Children may not come to school if they have a fever (a temperature of 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or more), consistent with our pre-pandemic policy. They will be allowed to return to school after they have been fever-free for 24 hours without fever-reducing medication. • If a child has diarrhea twice in a school day, a teacher will contact their parent(s)/caregiver to make them aware and remind them that if there is a third case of diarrhea that day, then the teacher will call again, and the child will need to be picked up within 1 hour of that call. • Children with unidentified rashes or loose bowels will not be allowed in school until their condition has been identified and treated such that they are healthy and ready for a full day’s activities, including outdoor play. • Lice are an unfortunate reality for many school-aged children. Parents and caregivers should check heads regularly. If your child has lice, you must immediately report it to Lilli. We will send a note to all families informing them that there is a case of lice in the school, and teachers will check each child in the school for lice. • If your child has lice while in school, they will need to be picked up within 1 hour of notification to the family. They will be cleared to return to school if you provide a note from their pediatrician or a lice treatment technician confirming that they were treated. After the treatment, parents must continue to use a nit comb each day until all nits have been removed. Security • Entrances to the synagogue buildings are locked to the outside. Synagogue staff, including Playschool staff, have a fob for entry. We do not distribute fobs to families. • Our electronic security system includes cameras surrounding the external perimeter of the synagogue, with camera footage accessible to administrative and custodial staff in real-time. • Our access control system includes a video intercom which allows staff to see and speak with anyone at the doors and to unlock the doors remotely. • We conduct safety drills, including evacuation and lockdown drills, multiple times throughout the year in developmentally appropriate ways that engage and reassure the children by focusing on safety and the ways we can help one another. 14
SHS Playschool Handbook 2021-2022 Updated 8/16/2021 Tuition Policy If Playschool needs to temporarily suspend in-person learning for any reason, including but not limited to the COVID-19 pandemic, we will immediately move to a remote learning platform, and there will be a period of up to 30 consecutive school days per closure during which there will be no tuition credits or refunds. If the closure lasts longer than 30 consecutive school days, families will have the option to continue participating in remote learning at a reduced cost of 50% of tuition until Playschool can reopen in person. This tuition policy ensures a commitment to our families as well as our staff in the event of an extended closure. If/when we reopen in person, tuition will be prorated, as necessary, to reflect the remaining months of school. Families who choose not to continue participating in remote learning after the 30 consecutive school days per closure will have the opportunity to receive a letter acknowledging their tax-deductible donation for any tuition paid for days we need to close beyond those 30 consecutive school days, or they may choose to receive a credit or refund for such paid tuition. Tuition is critical to Playschool’s ability to operate and provide families with the depth and breadth of learning that they have come to expect. Weather Related School Closings If inclement weather or inclement weather forecasts prompt us to delay our opening, close early, or close entirely for the day, we will notify families as far in advance as possible by text and email. 15
