2020 Suggested Summer Reading – 1st Grade
Popular Picture Books
7 Ate 9: The Untold Story by Tara Lazar (RL: 1.5). When 7 is accused of eating 9, worried 6
hires a detective to investigate.
After the Fall by Dan Santat (RL: 3.3). After falling off the wall, Humpty Dumpty is very afraid of
climbing up again, but is determined not to let fear stop him from being close to the birds.
Bad Seed by Jory John (RL: 1.3). A bad seed who cuts in line, never washes his hands or feet,
and lies.
Barkus by Patricia MacLachlan (RL: 2.3). Barkus is a large and very smart dog who comes to
live with seven-year-old Nicky when Nicky's Uncle Everton goes traveling--and soon he is a family and
school favorite.
Baseball Buzz (Sports Illustrated Kids Series) by C.C. Joven (RL: 0.7). Jackson loves
baseball, but a bee in the outfield causes him to miss a fly ball, and the game is stopped until the bee
finally departs.
The Bear Ate Your Sandwich by Julia Sarcone-Roach (RL 3.0). When a sandwich goes
missing, it seems that a bear is the unlikely culprit.

Charlotte the Scientist is Squished! by Camille Andros (RL: 2.9). Charlotte, a serious
scientist and a bunny, uses the scientific method to solve her problem: being squished by her many
brothers and sisters.
Dear Boy or Dear Girl by Amy Rosenthal (RL: 1.3). Life lessons about how to be strong and
love yourself.
Don’t Push the Button by Bill Cotter (RL: 1.5). The only rule in Larry's book is that the reader
not push the button, but when no one is looking, it may be irresistible.
Don’t Throw It to Mo by David Adler (RL: 1.5). Mo is the youngest kid on the Robins football
team. The kids on the rival team tease him for being a 'butterfingers' who's too tiny to catch the ball.
Drawn Together by Mihn Le (RL: 2.8). A boy and his grandfather cross a language and cultural
barrier using their shared love of art, storytelling, and fantasy.
Fly Guy’s Big Family by Tedd Arnold (RL: 1.4). Fly Guy misses his family, so Buzz invites them
to a surprise party and his mother, father, and thousands of brothers and cousins show up.

Franklin’s Flying Bookshop by Jen Campbell (RL: 2.4). A magical story about a little girl and
a dragon who dream up a plan to share their love of books and stories.
The Good Egg by Jory John (RL: 1.9). A very good egg learns to relax and not be perfect all the
time.
Hilo: The Boy Who Crashed to Earth by Judd Winick (RL 1.6). When a mysterious boy
falls from the sky, friends D.J. and Gina must discover the secrets of his identity and help him save the
world.
How to Code a Sandcastle by Josh Funk (RL: 1.7). Pearl and her trusty rust-proof robot,
Pascal, need to build a sandcastle before summer vacation is over, and they're going to do it using code.
I Lost my Tooth by Mo Willems (RL: 1.4). Friends search for Zoom Squirrel's missing baby
tooth.
The Infamous Ratsos by Kara LaReau (RL: 2.2). Rat brothers Louie and Ralphie Ratso try to
prove they can be as rough and tough as their father in the Big City, but every time they try to show how
tough they are, they end up accidentally doing good deeds instead.
Jabari Jumps by Gaia Cornwall (RL: 2.2). Jabari is definitely ready to jump off the diving board.

  Cambridge? by Carrie Clickard (RL: 1.7). Get to know Chef Joyce Chen who is famous for
     popularizing Chinese food in the northeastern United States.
Flying Frogs and Walking Fish by Steve Jenkins (RL: 4.2). Text and illustrations explore unusual
     animal locomotion.
The Flying Girl: How Aida De Acosta Learned to Soar by Margarita Engle (RL: 4.4). The true
     story of Aída de Acosta, the first woman to fly a motorized aircraft.
Have You Heard the Nesting Bird? by Rita Gray (RL: 1.9). Learn just why the mother nesting bird
