Dear prospective Sponsor, The Battery-Operated Land Transport (BOLT) Team is a Virginia Tech undergraduate design team dedicated to evolving electric vehicle technology by designing, manufacturing, and racing high-performance electric motorcycles. Established in 2012, our mission is to maintain the reputation and history of innovation at Virginia Tech. We want to demonstrate to the motorsports industry that a vehicle can be both zero-emission and highly competitive in racing environments. We invite you to join us as we defy the bounds of what’s possible and redefine expectations for electric racing vehicles. PREVIOUS SUCCESSES First Generation (BOLT I) – 2012 • International Competition: 3rd Place • North American Championship: 1st Place Second Generation (BOLT II) – 2014 • AHRMA eMoto Series: 1st Place Third Generation (BOLT III) – 2017 • AHRMA eMoto Series: 2nd Place BOLT IV - A NEW GENERATION OF SUPERBIKE The team converted a stock Yamaha R1M to a fully electric motorcycle with nearly equivalent power and speed characteristics. For the past year, we have optimized performance even further by improving lean angle through the structural redesign of several key components and implementing various control features to improve rideability. We have optimized the powertrain for the unique load conditions faced during races. BOLT IV will be race ready by Spring 2021. BOLT V - THE NEXT STEP IN ELECTRIC MOTORSPORTS As the tenth anniversary of the founding of BOLT at Virginia Tech quickly approaches, we set our sights on our next leap into the future of electric vehicles. The students participating in Senior Design this year will begin the development of BOLT V, the team’s fifth zero- www.bolt.org.vt.edu 1
emission superbike. We are excited to build upon the advancements made by former team members and once again build the fastest street-legal vehicle at Virginia Tech. TEAM COMPOSITION BOLT at Virginia Tech is a diverse team. Our members are from all academic levels and several engineering majors. Every fall, we recruit a large freshman class to integrate into team projects. Based on expertise and project demands, each member commits to one of three sub-teams: CHASSIS • Integrates all physical systems into the motorcycle frame • Responsible for the safety and comfort of the rider • Ensures the structural integrity of the finished product POWERTRAIN • Researches and selects components related to energy and power transmission on the bike • Designs and develops the battery pack and high voltage systems • Tests and validates performance of powertrain control systems CONTROLS • Develops and implements all software for system monitoring and data acquisition • Designs printed circuit boards and other hardware to implement desired control software • Records and analyzes telemetry data acquired during testing and races • Collaborates with Chassis to design and implements sensor mounts www.bolt.org.vt.edu 2
BUDGET BOLT at Virginia Tech received funding from industry sponsors like Yamaha, General Motors, Ford, and many others. We also receive support from the Ware Lab (our home on campus) and other Virginia Tech entities. Each year, the team allocates funds for design and manufacturing to each of our sub-teams. Based on the work we want to do this academic year, our goal is to raise $50,000 by June 2021. Your contributions will go towards buying materials, fabricating parts, and investing in tools and software that enable us to function as a design team. SPONSORSHIP Without the generous support of our sponsors, we would be unable to push the limits of electric motorcycles. As a sponsor, your company gains exposure during outreach, recruiting, and race events. During the year, you will receive periodic newsletters with important updates and news about the team. You would always be welcome to stop by and see our progress in the Ware Lab. Our Team Leads would be more than happy to arrange a tour. Any support you can provide, either monetary or in-king, would be greatly appreciated.
