Page 3 Curbside Collection From January to July 4, 2020, there are no changes to the curbside collection programme. Collection of garbage and blue box recyclables will continue to be weekly in urban areas and bi-weekly in rural areas, with one-sided collection on rural Township roads. Effective July 7, 2020, we have some fantastic changes happening! All households will begin receiving weekly collection of recyclables and green bin organics, and every other week collection of garbage, with collection at the end of your drive/laneway. See page 4 for details. User Pay Garbage Garbage must be in County-issued user pay bags. There is no set-out limit. Bags are available in two sizes, sold in packages of 10. Packages of large bags are $20.00 and small are $15.00. Visit our website to find a distributor in your area. Blue Box Recycling Recycling must be in municipal-style blue boxes and sorted into two separate boxes, one for papers and the other for containers. See pages 6-9 for a full list of acceptable materials. Blue boxes are available at municipal offices and all County waste facilities. Winter Weather Please set your material in a visible location at ground level. Sometimes winter weather will affect curbside collection services. We will collect your materials as soon as we are safely able to do so. Rarely is collection cancelled but it may be postponed.
Page 4 NEW Curbside Collection Programme From January to July 4, 2020, there are no changes to the curbside collection programme. Collection continues to be weekly in urban areas and bi-weekly in rural areas, with one-sided collection on rural Township roads. See the January to June calendar pages for the rural collection schedule. Effective July 7, 2020, we have some exciting changes happening to our programme! • We will be launching curbside organics green bin collection • ALL households, both urban and rural, will receive the same frequency of collection: Starting - Recyclables - weekly July 7 - Green bin organics - weekly - Garbage - every other week • ALL households will be able to set out materials at the end of their driveway or laneway for collection. • Leaf and yard waste collection will be offered to urban households, once per month, in October and November in 2020. Watch your local newspaper for collection dates. We are pleased that Waste Management (WM), who currently provides curbside collection services, will continue as the contractor in 2020. WM will begin using curbside collection vehicles fueled by compressed natural gas (CNG). These vehicles will be cleaner and quieter than traditional diesel-powered trucks. Each CNG collection vehicle will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by an average of 15% (or 14 metric tonnes per year), while also producing 50% less nitrous oxide emissions and virtually zero particulate emissions.
Page 5 Collection Days Collection days are listed on page 30. For most households, your collection day will stay the same. • For households in Salem and in Elora on the north side of the river, your collection day will change to Tuesday. • The town of Fergus will still be collected on Wednesdays, however garbage will be collected on alternating weeks with Highway 6 as the dividing line. • These changes will make collection routes on Tuesday and Wednesday more efficient. • Please remember these changes will only begin on July 7. Participation Information Additional information on our current and new collection programmes can be found in this calendar. • Recycling collection, check out pages 6-9; • Organics collection, go to page 10; • Collection days and weeks, see maps on pages 16 and 30, as well as the monthly calendar pages. Beginning in May, we will be delivering green bins and detailed participation information to every single-family household. If you have questions, please visit our website or contact us by email or phone. Contact information is on the back cover. The County will also be launching a “waste app” in the New Year where you can set up your own collection reminders and look up what goes where. Watch for promotions coming in 2020.
