Meet Your 2020 Safety Building Lasting Safety Cultures Leadership Coaches Upon Strong Foundations of Trust Keni Thomas - In the summer of 1993 Staff Sergeant Keni Thomas was deployed to Mogadishu Somalia with the 3rd Ranger Battalion as part of an elite special operations package called Task Force Ranger. Their mission was to find and capture a criminal warlord named Mohammed Farrah Aidid. On the 3rd of October, Keni and his fellow rangers dis- tinguished themselves in an eighteen hour fire-fight that would later be recounted in the highly successful book and movie "Black Hawk Down". Nineteen Americans gave their lives and 78 were wounded in the worst urban combat seen by US troops since WWII. A powerful speaker, Keni captivates audiences from beginning to end as he tells the incredible story of extraordi- nary individuals and how they fought to bring each other home. Drawing from his experiences on the battlefield, Keni inspires people to achieve greatness by stressing the importance of outstanding leadership at every level, even if the only person you are leading is yourself. His message of "Train as you fight - Fight as you train and Lead By Example" epitomizes the Ranger motto "Rangers Lead the Way!" Keni sums it up like this, "Leadership has never been about the rank or the position you hold. It's about the exam- ple you set. There are people to your left and to your right who are counting on you and its up to you to deliver. But you will only be as good as you prepared yourself to be." David Horsager - David is the author of the best selling book “The Trust Edge” and CEO of Trust Edge Leadership Institute. I’ve also been an electrician for 19 years. On August 24, 2011, I survived an arc flash explosion that without a doubt should have killed me. It was late in the day, and we were off in a half-hour. The general contractor asked me to relocate a temporary power feed that was running all of the electricity to the construction site. The task was simple: disconnect the cord, pull the cord through a doorway, and hook it back up. But there were two problems. First, there was no main breaker on the panel, so the only way to shut off the power was to call the utility company. Second, about a week earlier, I let a co-worker borrow my arc flash suit. Early on in my career, no one wore arc flash suits, and until about five years before the accident, I had never seen one. But I had done way more dangerous tasks than this countless times – why couldn’t I do this? I had a decision to make, and I made the wrong one. Allan Zumpfe - Allan is CEO of Dorchester’s Farmers Cooperative . Zumpfe was raised on a grain and livestock farm near Milligan, NE and graduated from the University of Nebraska- Lincoln. He has 32 years of experience and leadership working for agricultural cooperatives and corporate companies. He started his career with Cargill then worked as a grain merchandiser for Quad County Co-op in Exeter before becoming the grain division manager for Agri Co-op in Holdrege for 16 years. Allan then held Sr. management positions with UFC and Central Valley Ag Cooperatives. Prior to his current position Allan was CEO at CPI Cooperative. Allan will share how his leadership journey has shaped his perspective on safety.
