Since 2006, Outward Bound Costa Rica has been an approved provider of courses for GSUSA Destinations, the ultimate in adventure programming for Girl Scouts aged 13–18. Elliott Wildlife Values Project scholarships are available for our Sea Turtle, Service and Scuba Adventure course. Each year we design custom courses for Girl Scout Troops and Troop Leaders. These courses can run at any time of the year, can be the duration you desire and are based on your troop’s interests and objectives. Pricing is based on the activity you choose, the number of participants and number of days spent with us. Outward Bound Costa Rica inspires a lifetime of leadership, growth and a commitment to serve through adventure-based learning.
VOLCANO TREK, TIDES & TRAILS Navigate volcano trails, trek through tropical rainforests, enjoy white sandy beaches, battle whitewater rapids, and grow your leadership skills and knowledge in Costa Rica this winter vacation! Body surf or boogie board the wave of the world-famous Manuel Antonio Pacific Coast and discover hidden waterfalls and spotting exotic wildlife like sloths, monkeys, coatimundis, and scarlet macaws along the way! Lend a hand on one or more service projects based on the current need of the community. Return inland to our rainforest base to perfect your map and compass navigation skills before trekking to Volcán Irazú. Stay overnight in a local community and interact with local school children to discover more about the Costa Rican way of life. Zipline through the rainforest canopy and tour a local coffee plantation and butterfly sanctuary. Complete your adventure by travelling to one of the best rivers in Costa Rica for whitewater rafting. Enjoy the challenge of class II and III rapids as you paddle alongside your coursemates and new friends. DATES: December 26, 2020 – January 9, 2021 COST: $2,470 USD
SEA TURTLE RETREAT Spend your winter vacation on the tropical Pacific coast beaches of Costa Rica! Make a difference in wildlife conservation by protecting endangered sea turtles at one of the world’s most important nesting sites for Olive Ridley sea turtles. Patrol the beaches at night to ensure the safety of nesting mama turtles, clean debris from the beach to eliminate barriers that prevent sea turtle access to their nesting sites, gather important data that aids research scientists in the conservation efforts, work to maintain local community buildings, and participate in cultural exchanges and games with the local school children. After completing your sea turtle service phase, tour and hike around the summit of a volcano crater and visit the famed Basílica de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles in Cartago. Finish your course with a thrilling zipline canopy tour and exploring an artisan market in Costa Rica’s vibrant capital city of San José. DATES: December 27, 2020 – January 5, 2021 COST: $1,990 USD
SEA TURTLE, SERVICE & SCUBA ADVENTURE Service and marine exploration? Count me in! Cross the Costa Rican border into Panama where you will work with local experts to excavate old nesting sites, release baby sea turtles, and patrol the beach at night looking for adult female turtles laying their eggs. Travel to Bocas del Toro to complete a multi-day service expedition with the indigenous Ngobe-Guaymi community. Then, earn your NAUI scuba certification on incredible coral reef and shipwreck dives around the island of Solarte. Additional activities include snorkeling, wakeboarding or kneeboarding, a visit to Sloth Island, and a ziplining tour through the rainforest canopy. DATES: SESSION 1: June 19, 2021 – July 3, 2021 SESSION 2: July 3, 2021 – July 17, 2021 SESSION 3: July 17, 2021 – July 31, 2021 SESSION 4: July 31, 2021 – August 14, 2021 COST: $2,545 USD This course is eligible for the Elliott Wildlife Values Project $500 Scholarship.
CATCHING WAVES Have you heard that being near the water makes you happier? Dive into the ultimate beach lovers dream of surfing the warm water breaks of the Pacific Ocean! Spend your nights camping under the stars and head out early to catch the first morning surf on the picturesque Pacific Coast beaches of Costa Rica. Learn the basics of popping up on the board, perfecting your stance, reading surf conditions, and how to steer clear of the dangerous rips. When not surfing, explore hidden waterfalls, volunteer on community development and conservation projects, and spot exotic wildlife like sloths, monkeys, and parrots along the way! Cook delicious meals, watch the sunset over the Pacific, and have cozy campfires on the beach. This course is ideal for intermediate level swimmers who are comfortable in the water. All surfing levels are welcome! DATES: June 26, 2021 – July 10, 2021 COST: $2,440 USD
RAINFOREST TREK, RIVER & REEF Discover the wonders of the rainforest! Step into your boots, strap on your backpack, and open your eyes to prepare for the beautiful journey to Piedras Blancas — one that few outsiders ever get to see. Wind through the remote rainforests of Costa Rica while spotting a variety of animals along the way, cross beautiful waterfalls, and spend two nights along the trail. This trek is full of scenic routes with views of high mountain ranges, sweeping flatlands and machete-carved trails that lead to loving homestays of families that we have partnered with for many years. At the end of your hiking expedition, relax at one of the world’s most beautiful beaches in Manuel Antonio and view the kingdom of wild animals in Costa Rica from monkeys to exotic birds at Manuel Antonio National Park. Immerse yourself in the Costa Rican culture on language exchanges, giving back with a day of service in a local nature reserve, rappelling an 80-foot waterfall, whitewater rafting class III and IV rapids, ziplining through the treetops on a canopy tour, and visiting the vibrant, bustling artisan market of San José. NEXT STEPS FOR GS DESTINATIONS 1. APPLY via GSUSA Destinations. Your Council Member will forward your application to Outward Bound Costa Rica for review, and we will inform you of your acceptance to the course of your choice. 2. ENROLL in your desired course online, and send in your deposit of $200. You will receive an Information Packet and Packing List for your course. 3. SEND in your paperwork (a copy of your flight itinerary and passport), pay your balance within 30 days of your course, and ask us any questions along the way. 4. GET EXCITED to meet one of our staff at the airport in Costa Rica to start your adventure!
