from 12pm-12:45pm)
Students are invited to eat lunch with their friends and
   instructors via Zoom!

Mini, Quark and Electron Camps
(Grade 1-7)
9:30am - 11:00am with daily virtual office hours (free and
optional from 11am - 12pm)
Students are invited to ask questions and get additional
learning support during the office hours via Zoom!

All students will receive and have access to:
A physical learning kit delivered to their homes.
   A Science AL!VE T-shirt.

PROGRAM THEMES
KINDERGARTEN
TINY SCIENTIST: DINOS ($175/WEEK)

Delve into the exciting world of paleontology and discover all
there is to know about the prehistoric giants that once roamed the
Earth. How were their fossils made? Why did they go extinct? Why
were even the insects of that time period so much larger than any
of their counterparts today? Join us for a week of discovery and
inquiry into the past.

TINY SCIENTIST: MAKERS ($175/WEEK)
Calling all aspiring architects, engineers, designers, and creators.
This is the camp for you! Join us for a week of challenging projects
where your imagination can take you anywhere from the deepest
ocean to the further reaches of our galaxy.

TINY SCIENTIST: MOVEMENT ($175/WEEK)
Are you curious about how all things big, small and inbetween
move? From robots to sound waves and muscles to electricty there
is movement all around us. Join us for an engaging week of
discovery in this general STEM camp.

TINY SCIENTIST: RADICAL REACTIONS ($175/WEEK)
Become a chemist for the week in our Mini Radical Reactions
camp! Join our team of Super Cool Science Geeks to learn all
about reactions and solutions. Discover how chemistry helps to
shape the world around us and is in our everyday lives!
SUMMER ACADEMY
PROGRAM THEMES
GRADE 1-2
MINI SCIENTIST: ENGINEERING ($200/WEEK)
Is a triangle really the strongest shape? How do we design a roller
coaster? Put on your iron rings and get ready to design, build, and
test your very own engineering projects!

MINI SCIENTIST: MOTION ($200/WEEK)
Fasten your seatbelts, and get ready to learn all about the
incredible world of energy, motion, and physics! This camp will
get you moving and shaking as you explore topics such as
aircrafts, volcanoes, and the forces of the universe!

MINI SCIENTIST: OCEAN EXPLORERS ($200/WEEK)
Did you know that less than 5% of the planet’s oceans have been
explored? Dive under the sea and put on your marine biologist
thinking cap as we learn all about marine life! Learn about life
under seas (both big and microscopic) and how we can protect our
oceans.

MINI SCIENTIST: THE SCIENCE OF COLOUR ($200/WEEK)
Why do we see colour? How does a prism work? How does
chemistry produce colour changes? This camp will explore the
science behind one of the world’s most exciting variables; colour!
Get ready to be crafty as we practice and create colourful science!
SUMMER ACADEMY
PROGRAM THEMES
GRADE 3-4
QUARK: BUILD IT BETTER ($250/WEEK)
Can 3D printers print live organs? How do circuits make our lives
easier? This engineering and design focused camp will get your
brain gears turning and your hands working! Participants will have
the opportunity to construct a variety of gadgets and gizmos,
including a 3D-printed project.

QUARK: CITYSCAPE ($200/WEEK)
Close your eyes, and imagine your dream city… now open your
eyes, because it is time to make that dream a reality! This camp
will introduce you to the science of city planning! Learn about
designing urban landscapes, sustainable development, and
protecting environmental resources. Design your very own city
prototype, using the design process. Navigate your way through
challenges faced in modern engineering and city planning.

QUARK: CHEMISTRY CSI ($200/WEEK)
Put on your lab coat and goggles, because we have a mystery to
solve! Explore the world of chemistry from the lens of a detective!
Learn about chemical properties, solutions, mixtures, compounds,
and more! Conduct your very own experiments to help solve a
Science AL!VE mystery.

QUARK: WONDEROUS WIZARDS & WITCHES
($200/WEEK)
Calling all prospective wizards and witches! If you did not receive
your acceptance letter by owl yet, do not fret! Learn about the
science behind your favourite wizarding courses, such as what
makes your potion glow (or explode!) and the optimal conditions
to grow magical and mundane
plants.

enough to fit inside your pocket? With Micro:bits, we can! Learn
about the relationship between software and hardware, by
programming a variety of functions using digital skills. Create
your own games and more using simple coding!

ELECTRON: SCIENCE OF THE BACK COUNTRY
($200/WEEK)

This camp will introduce participants to the incredible science
happening in British Columbia’s massive and mountainous
backyard! Participants will identify common sights they may
find out on their next hike, study the physics behind rope
systems used in search and rescue, and explore the effects of
backcountry activities on the human body. plants.

ABOUT US
Science AL!VE is a not-for-profit organization based at Simon Fraser
University within the Faculty of Applied Sciences. We provide opportunities
for youth to explore science beyond the textbooks through hands-on,
interactive discovery, which stimulates their interest and fosters confidence.

WHAT WE DO
Part of our mandate is to reach youth throughout British Columbia. In order
to do this, we run many different programs. Our programs include:
   Aboriginal Outreach
   Haida Gwaii Partnerships
   Inter-city Initiatives
   Weekend Clubs
   After School Programs
   Workshops
   Summer Academy
   Girls Programs

During the summer, we run science summer camps at SFU's Burnaby and
Surrey campuses, as well as on Haida Gwaii and in various communities in
Northern BC. During the school year we lead on-campus and in-class
workshops, weekend clubs, after-school programs, and various community
events.

Science AL!VE strives to make science accessible to all youth regardless of
gender, culture, or level of affluence. Our outstanding staff and volunteers
are committed to sparking the enthusiasm and imaginations of their
audiences. They serve as positive role models, dispelling the stereotypes
associated with STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art &
 Mathematics).
