Welcome Hello and welcome to the ninth Lancaster Jazz Festival. Following on from overwhelming responses from last year we’ve expanded the festival again to bring even more excellent and exciting jazz and contemporary music to Lancaster. We’re kicking it all off with the Festival Launch at Lancaster Brewery on Wednesday 11, holding another excellent Youth Jazz Night on Thursday 12, and on Friday 13 we’ll be hosting the Jazz North northern line showcase day - adding an extra day of performances in Sun Square - before heading back to Lancaster Brewery in the evening for our first headline performance. Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 are packed out with performances in Sun Square, The Hall and the Storey finishing both days with headline performances at the Dukes. 2019 Festival Launch Vipertime Wed 11 / 7.30pm / Lancaster Brewery Born out of the snake-pit of Leeds Ben Powling tenor saxophone, house parties and now released into flute the wild, Vipertime draw on the Matías Reed bass guitar mesmeric forms and harmonies of Charlie Grimwood drums, 1970s ethno-jazz. Refracting this percussion influence though post-punk, '60s garage, free jazz and afrobeat they Luke Reddin-Williams drums, create irrepressible improvised music percussion for the dancefloor. Forming in early 2018 as a free improvising group, the Where Lancaster Brewery band recorded the ‘All Our Heroes When Wed 11 Sep, Are Dead’ EP which received 7.30pm doors widespread radio play. 8.30pm performance With a permanent line up featuring Duration 1hr 30mins, no interval members of Roller Trio, World Tickets Free Service Project and Wandering Monster their upcoming debut album finds Vipertime in sharp focus and with lethal intent. Unleashing pounding drums, skittering percussion, snarling bass and impassioned saxophone moving between driving riffs and agile improvisation. This will be a perfect kick off to this year’s festival. 6
Youth Jazz Night Thu 12 / 7.30pm / Lancaster Brewery For the first time we are bringing this Where Lancaster Brewery year’s Youth Jazz Night into the main When Thu 12 Sep, festival weekend to showcase some 7.30pm doors of the fantastic young musicians from 8pm performance the area. Jazz North’s northern line showcase Selected by Jazz North to be part of its northern line scheme, these bands are some of the most exciting artists to represent the northern jazz scene. As well as this showcase, they will benefit from ongoing touring, mentoring and support from Jazz North. Her often dreamy and melancholic aura is offset with her energetic and imaginative band of Manchester’s finest young contemporary improvisors. Formed out of a residency at the Sage Gateshead in 2018, the quintet has played Nishla’s lyrical, story driven tunes at Band on the Wall and the Vortex and knocked us out at last year’s programme launch. 8
Not Now Fri 13 / 1.40pm / Sun Square Jamie Toms saxophone Charlie Pawel Jedrzejewski guitar Richard Campbell piano A fast-rising young band playing Ian Paterson bass in a variety of styles directly Mark Johnson drums connected to their inspirations. Not Now Charlie draw on their mutual love of traditional jazz, prog rock, neo soul, R&B and folk creating memorable melodies, infectious grooves and a keen, finely-tuned sense of tight ensemble playing. This Newcastle based band tops all this off with the excitement of improvisation. Rafe’s Fri 13 / 2.50pm / Sun Square Jamil Sheriff moog, keyboards Dilemma Eleanor Begley vocals, loop station Katie Patterson drums Commissioned for the Bolton Sam Vicary electric bass Worktown Festival to celebrate the play Spring and Port Wine by Bill Naughton, Rafe’s Dilemma brings an eclectic mix of jazz, electronic music and rock to create an excitingly fresh and intriguing sound. Combining passion and musical excellence the quartet depicts the story of a family on the edge, using spoken word, improvisation, synthesised soundscapes and carefully crafted songs. A thoroughly entertaining and immersive experience.
SogoRock Fri 13 / 4pm / Sun Square Ferenc Lakatos keyboard, vocoder SogoRock (meaning ‘brother-in- law’) is a genre and country Bela Horvath piano, keyboard crossing band from Leeds. Led by Alexander Miller bass resident Hungarians Bela and Matt Hines saxophone ‘Laky Franz’ with their fellow Nik Svarc guitar LCoM alumni, they have created a Joshua Gumbs drums genre-defying sound that resists classification. They blend elementsof jazz, fusion and funk but also rock, gospel and more. Key to their collective sound and vision is every band member bringing and infusing their own traditional homeland style into the heady brew. freesetrio Fri 13 / 5.10pm / Sun Square Jemma Freese keyboard, vocals freesetrio are a heavy triphop Theo Goss drums darkjazz band whose Chris Sellers electric bass compositions explore inner demons and truths using twisted layered lyrics, bending vocals and eerie harmony to create a dark beauty. freesetrio take the audience on a journey of self- reflection, down a rabbit hole into a tunnel and back out into the light, holding them in a mesmerising trance and enabling the release of suppressed emotions. Their combination of hypnotic drum patterns, bold sub-bass riffs, dark harmony and daring yet intricate vocals creates their bespoke sound. 10
John Pope Fri 13 / 6.20pm / Sun Square John Pope double bass Quintet Jamie Stockbridge alto saxophone Faye MacCalman tenor A chordless all-star lineup of saxophone, clarinet northern musicians, the John Graham Hardy trumpet Pope Quintet draws on the history Johnny Hunter drums of 60s avant jazz and hard bop, but with a modern sensibility grounded in the sounds of today’s European jazz scene. Open- hearted, quirky compositions and dynamic anything-goes improvisation, played with a hard- swinging groove and referencing everybody from Ornette Coleman to Tom Waits and Mingus to the Pixies. The John Pope Quintet kicks up a joyful racket full of rewards for the adventurous listener. Beyond Fri 13 / 7.30pm / Sun Square Lara Jones saxophones Albedo Ben Gaunt synths Tim Knowles guitar Retro-futuristic synth-jazz drawing Sarah Heneghan drums, drum on jazz traditions yet pushing in machine new exploratory and experimental directions: Beyond Albedo create moments of East-West fusion and Afro-spiritualism that give way to pulsating sci-fi electronica with an energetic and danceable quality. All members bring both traditional and genre-pushing elements resulting in an exciting sonic mix from this Leeds/Sheffield based band.

2019 Headline Artist Camilla George Plus support from Youth Orbit Fri 13 / 7.30pm / Lancaster Brewery With two critically acclaimed albums and a host of award nominations under her belt Camilla brings her hypnotic blend of Afrofuturism, hip hop and jazz to the Lancaster Jazz Festival. A Jazz Jamaica alumni, Camilla’s love of fusing African and Western Music to make her own unique style is a key reason why she is a firm fixture on the new London Jazz scene alongside peers such as Nubya Garcia and Shabaka Hutchings. Her music is politically minded and heavily linked with African history and slavery in particular. Her latest album looks at tales that slaves passed onto their children through generations and, whilst full of sorrow, is essentially a story of hope for black people and mankind that we can one day live together in harmony. Plus support from Youth Orbit. This collective of local, mostly school age, musicians offering their own unique take on where they find jazz. Their original tunes and ensemble playing inject a joyous breath of fresh air into the many directions jazz can take. Casper Hatlestad Sat 14 / 12pm / The Storey Auditorium In a soundscape inspired by Casper Hatlestad guitar and Scandinavian nature and industrial electronics city life Casper creates a unique atmosphere for the listener. Tebu Project Sat 14 / 1.40pm / Sun Square Born and raised in Cameroon, Tagné Tagné Tebu piano has worked with musicians from Job Kayembe bass many different cultures and musical Helena Summerfield flute, backgrounds. His music blends saxophone African melodies and grooves with jazz and Western harmony and is Myke Wilson drums based on African storytelling on the themes of love, war and peace, Where Sun Square conveying a bitter-sweet sense of When Sat 14 Sep, 1.40pm melancholy balanced by irrepressible Duration 1hr optimism. Tickets Free Tagné is strongly influenced by his Cameroonian background and jazz training, and also immerses himself in the soundscapes of Latin American and Asian music, as well as African and European music – all underpinned by a conviction in the importance of studying, and celebrating, our similarities rather than our differences. 16
Presented in partnership with Lancaster Arts Maja Bugge ‘NORTHERN’ Sat 14 / 1.30pm / The Round, The Dukes NORTHERN is a new jazz project led Maja Bugge cello and loops by the internationally acclaimed Hervé Perez sound design composer and cellist Maja Bugge in Adam York Gregory film collaboration with Adam York Gregory and Hervé Perez. Duration 2hrs, including intervals Tickets £5 Advance £8 Door Transaction fees apply Available from lancasterjazz.com Rob Bentall 3pm / The Storey Auditroium Robert Bentall nyckelharpa, Rob Bentall is a composer and electronics performer working with electronic sound and live instruments. His works hybridise ambient, folk, and improvised music. Rob has studied the nyckelharpa, learning Swedish traditional tunes and techniques before deconstructing them and turning them into new, semi- improvised compositions. He fuses electronic elements such as live sampling and multi-track looping into this unique performance. The resulting music is both intricate and beautiful, shedding new light on the distinctive timbre of the nyckelharpa. 18
Charlotte 3.40pm / The Storey Auditorium Charlotte Keeffe trumpet, Keeffe Quartet flugelhorn, cornet Ashley John Long double bass Alex Ward guitar Influenced by the likes of Miles Ben Handysides drums Davis and Polish trumpeter and composer Tomasz Stańko, award winning trumpeter/flugelhorn player Charlotte Keeffe brings together her latest quartet of musicians from around the UK to explore and weave together her compositions, inspiring creative freedom through experimental improvisation. ‘…Charlotte Keeffe’s blood-red, rasping flugelhorn and trumpet blew breathy cadences and messages as if her lungs were burning with an electricity all of her own.’ Polly Vir 4.30pm / The Storey Auditorium Polly Virr cello, electronics Polly will take you on an evocative, cinematic journey exploring natural landscapes and phenomena, featuring original compositions for cello and electronics. Having performed as half of Täpp at last year Festival and we are excited to have her back with her new solo project. Using a loop pedal and other electronics, Polly will build and create the tracks live on stage, with the audience immersed in this process. Polly’s music draws upon classical, folk, jazz and film music to create a new and exciting sound world.
Tom Ridout Quintet Sat 14 / 3pm / Sun Square The Tom Ridout Quintet plays mostly Tom Ridout saxophones, original music with the occasional recorder detour into interesting arrangements Billy Marrows guitar of well known folk/Beatles tunes. The Will Barry piano sound of the band is as varied as the musicians in it - settling somewhere Flo Moore bass around a modern jazz meets Rod Oughton drums rock/folk. Influences come from as far and wide as Wayne Shorter and Joni Where Sun Square Mitchell to Led Zeppelin and Kenny When Sat 14 Sep, 3pm Wheeler, John Scofield, English Folk Duration 1hr and beyond! This project is Tom’s Tickets Free main creative voice as a writer and as a player and representative of him as an artist and musician. 20
Kinkajous Sat 14 / 4.20pm / Sun Square Travelling through places where Adrien Cau saxophone, bass borders disappear, Kinkajous give clarinet birth to a compelling mix of tonalities Benoît Parmentier drums and influences drawn from their Maria-Chiara Argiro keys London home. They conjure a passionate, introspective and Jack Doherty synths powerful music, inspired by their Andres Castellanos bass diverse experiences from across the artistic spectrum – covering Where Sun Square orchestral to jazz and world to When Sat 14 Sep, 4.20pm electronic. In their quest for new Duration 1hr sonic highways, their unique setup Tickets Free and vision brought them to uncharted and exciting territories. Kinkajous will be performing music from their debut album 'Hidden Lines’. “One of the most distinct and intriguing Jazz collectives around” - London Jazz Festival 21
Serendip Sat 14 / 5.40pm / Sun Square Belgian born saxophonist Arnaud Arnaud Guichard tenor Guichard is an up and coming voice saxophone on the UK jazz scene fronting his Florent Jeunieaux guitar Serendip project. The band was Jasper De Roeck double bass conceived in late 2017 and released its debut album last year. Serendip is Matthias De Wälle drums a musical journey inspired by the ancient Persian tale ‘The Three Princes of Sernedip’ by Amir Where Sun Square Khusrau. The compositions When Sat 14 Sep, 5.40pm melodically narrate the characters of Duration 1hr the tale and explore the essence of Tickets Free the word Serendipity into a fusion of jazz language and intricate group interplay. 22
Commissioned by Lancaster Jazz Festival Weezy Jefferson & The Band Sat 14 / 7pm / Sun Square Weezy Jefferson is an artful Leeds Weezy Jefferson vocals based MC with a distinctive flow. For Leon Johnson keys this unique premiere performance, Bianca Gerald vocals created especially for Lancaster Jazz Festival, he will be putting together Richard Moulton drums and collaborating with a band of five Owen Burns keys jazz musicians to play a new set of Dan Heery electric guitar original music. The band will feature players drawn from the hotbed of Where Sun Square musical talent around Leeds and When Sat 14 Sep, 7pm feature a singer/songwriter plus Duration 1hr drums, keyboards, electric guitar and Tickets Free bass. 23

2019 Headline Artist Vula Viel Sat 14 / 7.30pm / The Round, The Dukes Bex Burch gyil Ruth Goller bass Dave Smith drums Forward-thinking UK trio Vula Viel released their second album, ‘Do Not Be Afraid’ earlier in 2019, continuing their singular musical journey centred around the gyil (Ghanaian xylophone). The band’s set confidently weaves sparse polyrhythms and intricate rhythm structures around bandleader Bex Burch’s gyil lines and take the instrument’s sound into new territory. The gyil and occasional vocal textures are underpinned by the powerful and insistent bass of Ruth Goller (Acoustic Ladyland, Melt Yourself Down, Let Spin) and drummer Dave Smith, introducing a rough, post-punk edge to the band’s sound. Described as “Ghanaian minimalism”, with the unassuming ability to blur the lines between atmospheres – Vula Viel’s sound may nod to Steve Reichian jazz, but influences don’t stop there: one can hear echoes of Bill Laswell and the irresistible energy of Arthur Russell. We are very pleased to have this band performing in the intimacy of the Round at the Dukes, this will be one not to miss. Vicente Magalhães Quartet Sat 14 / 8pm / The Hall Vicente Magalhães writes music that Raquel Álvaro mezzo-soprano pays tribute to his Portuguese Vicente Magalhães piano nationality. Whether he does this by Jack Garside double bass exploring certain indigenous rhythms and traditional chord progressions or Alasdair Pennington drums by re-arranging and re-imagining old folk tunes the output is a singular Where The Hall one and very under explored. The When Sat 14 Sep, 8pm end result is an intriguing and Duration 2hrs including interval engaging set of modern jazz pieces Tickets Free that are deeply rooted in Portuguese history and culture. The resulting sound of the band is fresh and full of original ideas and the voice of Raquel Álvaro is really quite special. 26
2019 Youth Jazz Commission Jacky Naylor ‘Industrial’ Sun 15 / 12pm / The Storey Auditorium This year’s Youth Jazz Commission Where The Storey Auditorium has been awarded to 24 year old jazz When Sun 15 Sep, 12pm doors pianist and composer currently 12.30pm performance studying an MA at The Royal Duration 1hr Academy of Music in London. He Tickets £5 Advance began composing as an £8 Door undergraduate at Birmingham Transaction fees apply Conservatoire and his well reviewed Available from lancasterjazz.com debut album ‘Rough Boundaries’, is a suite of original big band music featuring Birmingham Jazz Orchestra. Jacky’s family is from the Aire, Worth and Calder valleys in West Yorkshire, where the mills and wool industry articulate not only key experiences in the lives of his grandparents and parents, also the cultural experience of industrial northern towns. The project will produce a suite of music capturing the varying aspects of the Industrial Revolution. The suite will divide into five sections: The Weaving Shed; Wakes Weeks; War of Attrition; Decline of Industry; Rebirth and will feature a new sextet that Jacky is assembling especially for this project. 27
About Time Band Sun 15 / 1pm / Sun Square About Time Band has been on the Aggie Dobson vocals North West scene for five years, Keith Redfern guitar entertaining audiences with a varied Ken Johnston double bass set of jazz-infused songs and latin rhythms, with lashings of Martin Chadderton percussion improvisation for good measure! James Bell saxophone Using the beautiful colours of her voice, Aggie performs with an Where Sun Square emotional honesty that really When Sun 15 Sep, 1pm captures the audience and draws Duration 1hr them in. Tickets Free Their repertoire includes well-known songs from Gilberto, Peggy Lee, Melody Gardot and Burt Bacharach, as well as modern twists on pop and rock classics by the likes of Bob Dylan, Amy Winehouse and The Buzzcocks. 28
Sloth Racket Sun 15 / 2.20pm / Sun Square Cath Roberts is a previous artist in Cath Roberts baritone residence at the festival and Sloth saxophone Racket is one of her long running Sam Andreae alto saxophone projects. The band is an ongoing Anton Hunter guitar experiment into combining free improvisation with Cath’s Seth Bennett double bass compositions and has been wowing Johnny Hunter drums audiences since 2015. Expect heavy riffs, graphic scores, saxes, electric Where Sun Square guitar, pedals, double bass and When Sun 15 Sep, 2.20pm drums making a lot of noisy fun for Duration 1hr everyone involved. They are touring Tickets Free on the back of a new album created at a residential recording session, resulting in an extended flexibility and even more enhanced group dynamics and interplay. Arthur O’Hara Trio Sun 15 / 3pm / The Storey Auditorium The trio was formed from a desire to Arthur O'Hara electric bass start a creative project growing from Chelsea Carmichael tenor strong musical connections built at saxophone music college. The deliberate Harry Pope drums decision to keep the trio chordless allows the band to explore the subsequent space and freedom Where The Storey Auditorium created for the three instruments to When Sun 15 Sep, speak to each other. This results in 2.30pm doors many opportunities for interaction 3pm peformance during the set and a strong yet Duration 1hr forever changing sense of narrative. Emerging from their underwater session, elements of their groovy, heavy, improvised sound remained but they were now set against fragile vocals and poignant lyrics, taking them into a much gentler song world. The result of the session, is called 'It's Morning' and comes out in September. In the spirit of a classic LP it features two sections of music and at this concert the band will perform and expand upon the album. The music is very much a journey from start to finish and this will be fully reflected in the live show.
