CO N CI ERGE P I CK S By Corey Lopez The rhythm of the holiday season begins when I light my first winter candle—probably way too early—and gradually unfolds as we start to set the scene in our home and watch as it reveals itself around the city. Lights and garland are hung, holiday music is played and cherished ornaments are unpacked. After that, there is no escaping the magic that surrounds us and we are drawn in and marvel at the wonder of the season. I love taking my three children to see the tree lighting in Boston Common, which takes place on December 5 this year. We also enjoy going to the Boston Pops Holiday show for children. The music is fantastic and the children’s performances are matinees which allows families time to enjoy an early dinner afterwards.Taking an afternoon to go ice skating on Frog Pond in Boston Common is also a must. They offer lessons for beginners, which are very helpful with three small ones in tow who are all just learning. For a night out without the kids, we enjoy a date night at one of the amazing restaurants in Boston’s South End. Sample appetizers and drinks at Boston Chops and then take a short walk to visit the SoWa Holiday Market where you can shop from 130 of the region’s best vendors and savor a winter cocktail or seasonal craft brew. Winter is also a great time to immerse yourself in Boston Spor ts as the Boston Bruins, Boston Celtics and New England Patriots are all playing. Catching a game live, or at one of our many spor ts bars, is always a fun way to spend a winter day. The Fours is the local fan favorite! Please don’t hesitate to ask Corey and the rest of our Concierge Team, Jenn, Michelle and Kim, to assist with securing tickets to a game at TD Garden or any of the other countless shows, events and concerts the city has to offer this holiday season. 7
N EW W I N G O P EN S AT P EA B O DY ES SEX MU S EU M The Peabody Essex Museum (PEM) in Salem, Massachusetts—one of the oldest and fastest-growing museums in the country—has just opened its new wing! New and renovated galleries offer a fresh look at PEM’s extraordinary collections of art and culture from around the world, including Maritime, Asian Export Art and Fashion and Design. Immersive contemporary artworks are placed in dialogue with historic objects and PEM’s galleries are designed to heighten feelings of surprise, wonder, delight and reflection. PEM also has one of the largest architecture collections of any art museum in the country and visitors are encouraged to explore its properties, including Yin Yu Tang, a Qing Dynasty Chinese house that was carefully relocated to the museum’s campus in 2003. Did you know that Mandarin Oriental, Boston’s signature hotel fan is located at the Peabody Essex Museum? Our fan, created in the 1850’s, is crafted from lacquer sticks, hand-painted paper leaf, gold and brass. Highlighting Boston’s close association with the golden era of China Trade, the fan depicts the city of Whampoa, a port city on the banks of China’s Pearl River well known to Boston merchants. 9
# I MA FA N O F B O STO N A N D T HE B RU I N S Meet our Doorman, Jean Brouillette. Did you know that he is the Boston Bruins biggest fan? Sixteen years ago, he moved to Boston at the pinnacle of Boston hockey. His story is quite unique, because he didn’t just move cities or states because of his passion for the Bruins, he moved countries! In 2003, he left Montreal to become a Bostonian and has never looked back. While Jean was growing up in Montreal, he followed the team during a fantastic era for the Bruins, 1988 to 1995 and loved to watch Canadian Ray Bourque. He has an unmatched admiration for Bourque since he is part of a select group of athletes who represented Boston for at least 20 years. “Those guys meant business,” says Jean. “Professional and skilled. No wonder why they were adored by Bruins Nation.” Jean is enjoying the fact that hockey season is here again and he expects the team to be rock solid on every front this year. He has been collecting Bruins memorabilia for over 30 years, so has an impressive collection that he is always in need of more room to showcase. “I love to gather all my friends at my very own sports bar nestled in Holbrook, Massachusetts. It is a sanctuary dedicated to the Bruins glory starting from the 80’s to 2011 when the Bruins won the Stanley Cup. It’s called The Bear’s Lair and I created it two years ago in my home.” Thanks to his profession as a Doorman, Jean made a connection that provided him with the opportunity to meet the “Silver Dream”! A day he will never forget. This hockey season you will find him cheering on the team at TD Garden whenever he can and he always welcomes guests and visitors to strike up a conversation with him about the Bs when they arrive at the hotel. He says “Don’t be shy, I have an open door policy.” 11
