CHAIR’S REPORT WALTER HEYDEN This December will mark the end of my second year as Chair and the end of my tenure in this position at the Milton Chamber of Commerce. As I take time to reflect on the past two years sitting in this position, it’s hard not to think about the amazing business community Milton has in this fast-changing town of ours and how your Chamber has worked hard to make its businesses better. The Chamber of Commerce was established to help foster small business growth and development in Milton by providing leadership in promoting the wellbeing of the business community in Milton. I have seen this first hand in many of the networking events, educational seminars, and events that the Chamber tirelessly puts on year after year. I have also seen your Chamber working for you behind the scenes with political and business leaders making sure that the business community has a voice at the table. I have had the opportunity to see how our Chamber compares to others across the country not only in size of membership, but in how we interact with our members and offer countless opportunities for our members to interact with each other. As Chair, it has been a very beneficial and very rewarding experience from a personal and a professional standpoint. I would like to thank the Board of Directors and volunteers for running the programs that make this Chamber so successful. A special thanks also to our President & CEO, Scott McCammon and the Chamber staff for the countless hours and commitment to making the Milton Chamber of Commerce an excellent voice for our business community. PRESIDENT & CEO’S REPORT SCOTT McCAMMON, CCE, ACE For most people, 2019 seems to have gone extraordinarily quickly. Certainly that seems true for our Chamber. Yet here we are at the end of another year! Thanks to our Chamber members, our community partners and sponsors, and the Chamber Board & staff, this has been a very successful year. The Chamber hosted over 50 events that were attended by a total of almost 3,000 people! Those events hosted politicians including Premier Doug Ford, Finance Minister Vic Fedeli, MPP Parm Gill, MP Lisa Raitt, Federal Finance Minister Bill Morneau, Federal Minister of Innovation, Science & Economic Development Navdeep Bains, and of course our very own Mayor Gord Krantz. Our Sports Celebrity Dinner also hosted Brian Burke and John Gibbons, among other sports icons. The Chamber also worked diligently to represent the interests of our local business community in partnering with or lobbying government. Whether public transit connections to bring new employees from Mississauga or red tape and taxation, the Milton Chamber worked daily on your behalf. The Milton Chamber also took a lead role in the formation of AMS Halton to leverage opportunities for local businesses in the Advanced Manufacturing Supercluster (AMS). The Innovation Corridor runs from Toronto to K/W. That makes Milton the geographic centre of that Corridor. Given our location and our young, well-educated workforce, Milton is well poised to capitalize on tech growth. Much of our success is due to our invaluable Board of Directors and volunteers. Thanks to Walter Heyden for his leadership as Board Chair. Of course, little would be possible without the dedication and hard work of the Chamber team. Joanne and Krista continued in their roles, but 2019 was also a year of transition as we said farewell to Melissa, Cheryl and Kaitlin and welcomed Ashley and Sam. Thank you all for your enthusiasm, ideas, hard work, and friendship. TREASURER’S REPORT WILFRED (BUDDY) EDGE I would like to share with you highlights of our year from a financial perspective. The Milton Chamber is a not for profit organization and we provide various services for the benefit of our members and the community. Once a year the financial records of the Milton Chamber are audited in late October. To view the audited financial statements, for the year ending September 30, 2019 please visit miltonchamber.ca/AGM. In 2019 we hosted 50 events, excluding the Milton Farmers’ Market and raised $343,000 by way of event fees and sponsorships which is $67,000 higher than the previous year. In 2019 total revenue was $710,658 which is up 7% or $45,815 over the previous year. An increase in events sponsorship revenue is attributed to this positive variance. Total operating expenses in 2019 was $708,226 which is $56,363 higher than the previous year. This variance is attributed to an increase in our costs to hold the events. This leaves us with a small surplus of $2,432 for 2019 versus a surplus for the previous year of $12,980. Depending on the surplus at the end of the year we will make allocations to a reserve fund for future items. Last year we reserved $4,000 to the capital fund reserve and in 2019 we incurred the capital costs so now we are pulling these funds out of the reserve to cover the cost of the upgrades. In addition, we are also allocating $20,000 from the scholarship fund reserve. These funds are to cover additional costs for the Sports Celebrity Event which were planned. This leaves us with a Net Surplus of $26,432 for the year. The Chamber grew the cash position by $21,371 and cash on hand sits at a comfortable $152,978.
